In Pursuit of Excellence 25 November 2016
INTRODUCTION Thank you to Sixth Form parents for attending parents’ evening this week. Parents evenings are an important part of our partnership with you, offering an opportunity to discuss your child’s strengths and areas for development and also to share any concerns. If you were unable to attend, your child’s pupil progress sheet will be sent home in the post. Year 10 are busy raising funds for this year’s senior citizens’ Christmas party. A very successful cake sale on Thursday raised over £150 towards this very worthy cause. Any queries about Parentpay should be emailed to [email protected]. A reminder to parents/guardians that Evening Study is open from 3.10pm to 6pm Monday to Thursday, with a hot meal provided at 5:40pm. Pupils do not have to attend every day and they can leave at any time, with your prior knowledge. Members of staff are there to support pupils with the completion of their work and we can offer tuition to them in Literacy and Maths. Year 11 and 6th Form also have their own areas with support available.
INTERNATIONAL EVENING
On Thursday 24th November Bishop Douglass School celebrated the diversity of its student body. Music, dance and fashion from all five continents were celebrated by students in years 7-13. The evening began with three musical items that took the audience from West Africa to America and then to Poland. Sophie Hopwood (11M) and Ingrid Tancredo's (11M) stylish mash-up of two well known pop hits providing the audience with the opportunity to sing along! This was followed by some expert Irish dancing by Niamh Martin (7F) who was joined by her younger sister. Other dance acts included Ahunna Echemuna (10F), Xenia James (10F) and Amma Patterson (10M) contemporary African dance which was a hit with the crowd. The crowd themselves were up on their feet in response to some fantastic Indian drumming led by Daman (10F) and Yuvan (11M). The evening concluded with a fashion show celebrating the many colours, patterns and native dress that identify many of our students and staff! Mr Reed

WORDS OF THE WEEK NATIONAL CHRISTMAS JUMPER
DAY
The 16th December is National Christmas Jumper Day. All students are encouraged to take part in this for the price of £1. This is a collection for Save the Children to raise money to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. Students can wear their Christmas jumpers over their school uniform instead of their school jumper. Our target is to raise £1,000 for the cause and if every student takes part, we can reach and exceed our target!

SOLUTION TO LAST WEEK’S CHALLENGE
SPIRITUALITY MATTERS
“The crucified Jesus is the King who leads into paradise” This week we celebrated the feast day of ‘Christ the King’. When we can Jesus ‘Christ the King’ we are referring to the concept of the Kingdom of God where the Christ is imagined as seated at the Right Hand of God. Last week’s gospel taught how Jesus was mockingly called ‘King of the Jews’ during his crucifixion. He was accused of blasphemy against God. But when Christians refer to Christ as king, we are remembering that Jesus is "king of kings and lord of lords” as prophecy has taught. He is the living Lord who came to deliver us from evil. This week let us focus on that sacrifice, and remember that Jesus is king.

BISHOP DOUGLASS
GOVERNING BODY
Vacancies have arisen for parent governors on the Governing Body of Bishop Douglass School. Parent governors are vital to our Governing Body. They share equally with other governors the responsibility for carrying out the Governing Body's wide range of responsibilities. Governors do not run the school day to day, as their role is at the strategic or policy-making level in the school. If you join our Governing Body you will serve for a four year term. Being a governor does take up time. There are three Governing Body meetings each year, and governors are expected to serve on one of the committees which meet once a term. You will need to set aside time to be able to be an effective governor; time to prepare for meetings and time for undertaking training and updating. A number of parents have already expressed an interest in becoming a governor. If you would like to take the opportunity to put yourself forward as a candidate please contact Melanie Barker for further information including a nomination form and the declaration form. The deadline for submission of applications is Friday 9th December 2016.
