Nominating Committee President Saude will be selecting a
nominating committee to contact lodge
members about serving in an elected
office or appointed position to begin in
January. Please answer their call and
consider this important part of being a
lodge member. These are 2 year
positions for the most part. Spread your
wings and help us lead Sverdrup in 2019.

President’s Column
As you read this message, I’m still on a high from
the wonderful trip to Iowa! I’m sure many who
attended will be asking, “When can we go again?”
With out-of-town guests and our lodge members
spending 4 days together, you can imagine the new
friendships that were made and memories of the
fun we had in Decorah at the Nordic Fest.
I certainly have a new appreciation of tour guides
responsibilities and talents. This self-guided tour was a real
experience and I’ve taken notes to assist anyone who is
planning to take a group on a bus tour to unknown lands like
Iowa! But as I can always count on Sverdrup lodge members to
make it work, no matter the task. We certainly demonstrated
resourcefulness under pressure.
Thanks to Audrey Solheim for bringing along fun word games
and puzzles, Eve Schultz for leading sing-a-longs, Earl Aune for
sharing cowboy poetry, Shirley Svanes and her babysitting story
and Kari Mahle and Candice Christianson for sharing their
personal stories with relatives from Norway who were part of
the entertainment at the Nordic Fest.
We also endured a physical stress-test to get into our “lodge”
on the Luther College campus, in the dark no less. I surmised
that soap-on-a-rope must have been invented by Avon for
college life and that a $1 coffee pot makes for 25 happier
Norwegians. I also predict that Earl may pen another humorous
story ending in “and that’s how I woke up on the Winneshiek
County courthouse lawn”. Remember…what happens in Decorah,
stays in Decorah.
Takk for meg, Jerry

New Member Dinner Sept 10th We are going to host our own membership dinner again
this year. Vern has just enough lutefisk to make it work
again.
So think about inviting family and friends who want to
learn about Sons of Norway and Sverdrup Lodge. If you
bring a guest, you can come to the dinner and short
program at no cost. Even if they don’t’ join this year, they
will learn something about us.
The menu will be Lutefisk and Ham, Mashed Potatoes,
Vegetable, Lefse and desserts with plenty of egg coffee
and valuable door prizes from our financial benefits
counselor, Ann Krause.
Mark it down, Monday night, September 10 th. We‘ll be
asking for a count with the September Nyheter. We are
limited to about 40 people. Sign up soon. Demonstrations
on cultural skills and classes will be the program.
Classes in 2018-2019 We would like to gauge the interest in
scheduling cultural skills classes for the
coming year and alert you to think about
expanding your horizons. They will also be
useful in new member recruitment and
member participation. If you are getting this
newsletter, consider responding to us with
your thoughts.
Wood Carving- Figure and
Chip Carving . We saw wonderful
examples at Nordic Fest.
Scandinavian baking classes of
holiday favorites and everyday foods.
Maybe a cookie exchange or bake sale
can be incorporated for the public.
Rosemaling – Learn the skill of the
typical Norwegian folk art of painting
items and homes with the style that
represents your ancestral area in
Norway. The styles of Rosemaling are
as diverse as the counties they
represent.
Norwegian Language Classes-
Marcia Hansen is ready to go this fall
again. It is a beginner’s class to
introduce you to the basics. With
more interest, the class can be divided
into new and renewing groups. It’s not
only fun, it’s brain building to learn a
new language.
Folk Dancing- We saw the Nordic
Dancers perform at Decorah with 34
couples of Junior and Senior folk
dancers who try-out when they are in
the 3rd Grade and dance for 10 years
with the group. Those are committed
young people!
Sports Medals Programs – Sons of
Norway honors those to work at
exercises, health and fitness. Life goals
that are so ingrained in our
Scandinavian heritage.
We have the resources and talent to lead
these classes, we only need to know that
there is interest. Fall, Winter and Spring are
ahead of us. Let’s roll, like lefse and butter!
Warren Granfor at the piano with Carol Christianson, Bernie
and Alice Falkenstein.; Margene and Wayne Granfor and Neil
Souther singing along to a favorite Norwegian tune at the
District Convention President’s Reception.
