Editor’s Note: What makes a person interesting? Call it magnetism, charm, charisma -- it all comes down to the same thing -- that magical quality that draws people. It’s the ability to light up a room. Think Ronald Reagan or Princess Di. Think JFK or Jackie O. So how do you get that quality? And what exactly is that quality anyway?

I asked Charles Thomas at BlueFire Design Group, who is an unusual and highly interesting fellow, to do an informal survey. Ask the most interesting people he knows: What makes people interesting? Below are the answers from his survey.

Charles’s note: I went around for two weeks surveying business leaders in the Sioux Empire. I got a lot of very interesting answers. Here’s what I found out:

1. What do you think makes someone interesting? Most common answers: people who are interested in the people around them. Intelligent people who asked great questions, shared views, were inquisitive, wanted opinions, had appreciation and a sense of humor. Biggest turnoffs: people who talked too much about themselves, didn’t pay attention when others spoke or talked too loudly or too long.

2. Charm – magnetism – charisma ---whatever you call it, who’s your favorite example of someone that exemplifies this quality? Why?Most charismatic depended on the age of who was asked… ranging from JFK to Jay Leno, Anne Hathaway to Oprah, Bill Clinton and Princess Diana. Reasons why they were perceived as charismatic had a lot of commonalities; among them: they were considered attractive, considerate, good listeners, had a good sense of humor, and appeared to be very interested in everyone around them. 3. How can a person become more interesting? The old adage, talk one-third and listen two-thirds of the time still seems to be a good idea. Other tips: Practice listening skills, be willing to share something interesting or funny, ask opinions and appreciate others. Make time for others - even when you don’t always have time.

Charles’s best takeaway: I realized that the most interesting people are people who are interested in others. So maybe what I’ve learned from doing this survey is that the best way to become a more interesting person is to be a great listener and be genuinely interested in others. Give them your full attention; make them feel they are the most important person in the world when you talk to them! I mean, it’s hard to resist a person who finds you fascinating, right? u

In celebration of the start of golf season, I’ll give my advice on networking through a golfer’s lens. When I go out to play a round of golf, I don’t play just once or twice a year; I go out as often (according to my wife, too often!) as I can. That’s applicable to networking too – you’ve gotta be out there meeting people. In fact, networking any room and situation can be like playing a round of golf…

Aim for the fairway, you’ll avoid the hazards. Linkedin and Facebook can serve as great tools for you to find out if there are similar contacts and connections between you and a new contact. Take a look at them and it can set you up for a better approach. But don’t plan on building that relationship over the social networking sites, meet them in person when you can.

Slow down the backswing – don’t force it.Speeding up your swing in networking will show you are just in it to meet numbers of people and get what you need fast. You’ll end up in the rough and it will take you twice as long to make good connections. Slow down and take the time to get to know people.

Success comes in the short game – take time to concentrate on the details of conversation.Enjoy the conversation you have with people when you’re chatting with them. Ask them questions, talk about them. As you learn more about them you will find opportunities to make an offer for a win-win deal or networking relationship.

Pick the proper club at the proper time – there’s a time and a place. Sometimes we’re in those ‘speed networking’ situations - events where the goal is to meet lots of people quickly. Most people at those events are ready and willing to play a ‘quick 9’ and try to meet a number of people. That’s great, and those events have their place, but the short, quick conversations have most value when you follow up and really build the relationship, and that often takes time. Be sure after one of those ‘speed networking’ events you follow up with an email or a call to get to really know someone.

Enjoy the round – be fun, have fun.This is obvious but worth repeating. People enjoy chatting with someone who has a positive attitude and is an upbeat conversationalist. You’re there, so you might as well enjoy yourself, even if it’s raining and you’ve had a horrible day.

These are just tips. I’m no pro, on the course or in the networking arena. But I do enjoy both and I hope you do too! See you on the course. u

online social networkingToday, we are more connected than ever. Social networks have expanded from a circle of friends and colleagues into thousands of “friends” and “followers” online. Justin Smorawske, President of Epic Multimedia offers the following ideas for effective online social networking:

Q: Is it better to market yourself on just one online network or promote yourself on several?A: You have to ask yourself what you have time for. Social media is a time commitment. Also, you need to think about where your audience is.

Q: Do you think it’s a good idea to participate in online discussions and forums?A: Completely! Social networking is a two-way street. If you don’t participate, you’re not there.

Q: How about having your own blog --whether it’s a work or personal blog?A: If you have the expertise and time, then definitely!

Q: Most people have connections with friends online, but what about trying to meet and form relationships with other professionals who are highly noted in your field and could really help your career? Do you recommend that?A: It depends on how you are looking at them. If you are looking to them as a mentor, then most definitely—experts are extremely passionate about their field and are willing to share.

Q: How can you avoid being too aggressive in marketing yourself – so people don’t “un-friend” or stop following you?A: You need to use the same techniques as face-to-face conversation. You need to ask yourself is the stuff I’m saying relevant. Does it have a purpose or focus?

Q: What’s your best advice on what-to-do and what-not-to-do on Facebook and Twitter?A: Evaluate your plan. What do you want to do and how can you achieve it? You need to separate who you are as an individual and who you are as a business. Be careful in how you promote yourself as it could break your level of professionalism. Also, Facebook allows you to create an outlet for people to see what you are doing in your career to establish yourself as a resource and leader.

The Bottom Line on online social networking – you can put yourself into many different social networks, but be sure to ask yourself, what is it that I am trying to communicate, and do I have enough time to use it to its full potential? u

We’ve all been there – in a pressure-cooker situation where the outcome relies on the first impression. Maybe it was getting the date, getting the account, or making the sale. Like it or not, initial conversations and first impressions hold the potential to determine future success or failure. And consider this: some companies are even using it as a way to screen job candidates. Imagine, having to sell yourself in 60 seconds or less! Lawrence and Schiller utilized a ‘speed dating’ approach to finding prospective interns recently. By holding a ‘Meet-Greet-Repeat’ event, L & S staff were able to meet applicants for two minutes each. L&S staff coordinator Kari Reynolds believes this quick approach was an effective way to meet applicants. And applicants had to be ready to sell themselves in a very short amount of time. “The slightly unconventional interview selection setup was the best way to meet each applicant and have a better idea of who would be the best fit for our agency…applicants who communicated how they fit the description of the position they were applying for did well. Individuals who were knowledgeable about L&S, knew about our past work and asked intelligent questions stood out from the crowd. The applicants who displayed excitement and willingness to work hard were also memorable,” Reynolds said. Augustana senior Mari Stensgaard was one of the applicants. Stensgaard believes making connections, being knowledgeable and confident are keys to making a strong first impression. “First impressions are incredibly important. In a short amount of time, you have to prove that you’re articulate, confident, and honest. Make a connection with them, and then prove that you know yourself. Know how to tell your personal story effectively, and remember to show passion,” Stensgaard said. u

Listening nourishes, validates, and energizes. Always do your best to remember their name, compliment them, add value to their day. These actions will speak so loudly, they may not remember what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel, this is a life-affirming process and a vital ingredient for success and happiness.

Do prompt effective follow-up. It is essential as reinforcement for the value that was generated through the contact. When you give a Business card, have it be different, and a reflection of your website and you. Have a signature color that's on your card, and your website, there's a better chance that they will remember you. Especially your smile and firm handshake! Always leave them with a compliment, a word of empowerment or congratulations. Email them when you get home, thank them for their time, and stay connected with great leaders. u

• Keywords & Titles- The amount of text content that can be

indexed by search engines can be important. Google, for example, cannot "see" images or fl ash movies. They can, however, “see” picture and other image names. Naming these well can make a big di­ erence.

- Use focused content fi rst! If you want better placement on the search engines, make sure that your keywords are visible on your page and throughout your site.

HER WAY TO THE TOP by Ashley White

Realtor Lynda Billars knows how to find success in business and in the communityIf you’re from the Sioux Falls area – or even if you’re not – chances are you’ve heard the “Lynda B. Advantage” jingle on the radio.

At a three-state region meeting a few years back, Lynda Billars, a realtor/broker for The Real Estate Company in Sioux Falls, was attending a class when a person from Iowa started singing her jingle out loud! “He told me, ‘I hear your song all the time,’” Billars recalls. “It just proved to me that one, jingles work, and two, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.”

But Billars also knows it takes more than a catchy jingle to succeed in business, especially the highly competitive real estate business. In that respect, she attributes much of her success to the power of networking. Being active in the community, she says, can have many rewards.

“I network to grow my business, plain and simple,” she says. “When you get out and network, face-to-face, people see the commitment you have to your business and to your community. There’s a trust that’s built in that.”

Billars’ commitment to the community is certainly impressive by anyone’s standards. She has been active in the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce for 20 years and currently serves as a Chamber ambassador. She sits on the PRESA (Professional Real Estate Sales Association) Board. She also serves on the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra League Board.

Billars is also part of a more informal group that meets every Monday morning to discuss business and current events. This group consists of people from all different fields and businesses and gives everyone a chance to network while also building friendships, she says.

To attract potential clients, Billars still believes in the power of in-person networking, but she also recognizes the impact of social networking sites. She’s even sold homes from the networking she does on Facebook and LinkedIn.

“It’s important for clients to see a personal side of you as a professional,” Billars says about networking online. “You can mix the two if you do it right.”

“I’m not afraid to try new things,” she adds. “I know that the end result of networking, if handled correctly, can only be positive.” u

“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know!” In today’s fast-paced business environment, people often need to work together in loose partnerships or networks to share interests and achieve common goals. Ritch Noble is a born networker – he just loves people and it shows! “Networking to me is creating relationships – not selling,” he says. “It’s being original, being yourself and actually building that relationship!”

Noble and his wife Jennifer moved to Sioux Falls in 2005 knowing no one. “Now, my wife says we can’t go anywhere without running into someone I know!” Noble is involved and engaged in the community serving as an Ambassador with the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, he’s also a board member for Faith Lutheran Church, as well as serving on several community boards.

While leads groups may be helpful to some, Noble operates first by giving back to the community. He says that being present at functions you care about and getting involved in them is key. “Sioux Falls allows you to network and market yourself so well. There are mixers, ribbon cuttings, open houses and many non-profit events that are open to the public every day. What makes those events and organizations possible are the people!”

As a partner in McKinneyOlson Insurance, Noble sees the value of networking from a business perspective. “You have to care about your business; you have to care about others and the importance of being a good role model.” Noble says there are a couple of key things for businesses to consider when they have employees engaged in networking activities. >

by Joe Sztapka, Regional director, Modern Woodmen of AmericaTRY THIS!Whenever I hear the word networking in a business context, I get a picture in my mind of a handshaking, backslapping type who works the room handing out business cards.

First off, my problem with “working the room” is, I’m not very good at the 30-second elevator speech. You know – where I’m to convince you that I’m a cross between Dr. Phil, George Clooney and Warren Buffet, who can solve all your problems. Personally I’m more of a cross between Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor and Larry the Cable Guy!

I prefer to build relationships with someone I truly like, and share a common interest with. If possible I try to get an introduction to the new person I’d like to meet from a common acquaintance.

A personal introduction at an event, or a quick call or e-mail works well, and helps start the relationship on a positive note.

I sincerely try to learn as much as I can about people and their business. A couple of questions I ask are, “How would I know if someone I’m visiting with would be a good prospect for you and your business?” and “How should I tell them about you and what you do?” More often than not I’m then asked about my business and how can they help me. The same day I follow up with handwritten note. People remember them. In today’s world we just don’t get that many anymore!

Now the process of "netweaving" begins. How can I help my new contact? Is there someone I know that they should meet? Is there some resource I have that would help them?

I “weave” myself into their lives, and I’ve found if you practice this type of weaving with a selfless attitude of helping others, you’ll be amazed at the results and how it will come back to you. You become known as the person who’s always helping others, and you become a resource people turn to. Not a bad position to be in.

Some things I’ve learned that are critical to making this work:

• Choose people you like, and have a common interest with.

• Give selflessly, how can you help them, not how can they help you!

• Stay in touch.

• Have fun.

This system has helped me build some great relationships and friendships. I hope it helps you. u
