LUT WILLIAMS BCSP Editor  A number of tough and pivotal in-state and local showdowns highlight the 39-game black college schedule for the rst weekend o f Septem- ber.  In North Carolina, two Div. II playoff par- ticipants and nationally ranked teams will tangle when two-time CIAA champion and BCSP No. 5 Winston-Salem State (0-0), ranked 17th in the D2football.com poll, opens the season Saturday (6 p.m.) hosting 18th-ranked UNC-Pembroke (0- 0). UNCP beat the Rams 25-21 last year to open the season en route to a 9-2 nish that earned the Braves their rst appearance in the playoffs.  The UNCP contest was the only regular sea- son game that WSSU QB Rudy Johnson did not start last season. Johnson took the controls af- ter that game and led the Rams to nine straight wins and its third straight playoff berth. Johnson is back to lead the Rams but the game will also feature the debut of heralded WSSU quarterback Phillip Sims who is expected to see playing time behind him. Elsewhere in North Carolina Saturday, UNC Charlotte (1-0) goes uptown to face 0-0 Johnson C. Smith (1 p.m.), North Carolina Central (0- 1) of the MEAC hosts CIAA member Elizabeth City State (0-0) in Durham (5 p.m.) and Chowan (0-0) hosts Fayetteville State (0-0) in a CIAA (7 p.m.) contest.  A key North Carolina/Sout h Carolina match up is in Greensboro, N. C. Saturday (6 p.m.) when BCSP No. 6 North Carolina A&T (1-0) hosts na- tionally ranked Coastal Carolina (1-0) at Aggie Sta- dium. Both teams are coming off big wins. A&T rushed for 307 yards and ve TDs in humbling Al- abama A&M 47-13 Saturday in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando. Coastal rolled up 434 yards of offense in downing The Citadel, 31-16. Coastal is ranked sixth in the FCS coaches poll and fth in the Sports Network poll. Two Virginia FCS games will match schools looking for their rst wins as Norfolk State (0- 1) hosts Liberty (0-1) at 4 p.m. and BCSP No, 10 Hampton (0-1) hosts nationally ranked (21st Sports Network ) William & Mary (0-1) at 6 p.m. Hampton lost a close game (41-28) at Old Do- minion in Connell Maynor's debut leading the Pirates while Norfolk State dropped a 10-6 deci- sion at No. 24 Maine.  In Alabama, BCSP No. 8 Tuskegee opens at home (1 p.m.) vs. Alabama A&M (0-1) and Stillman (0-0) debuts at home vs West Alabama (0-0) in Tiger Bowl 2014 (3 p.m.). BCSP No. 1 Tennessee State (1-0) is in Montgomery to face Alabama State (0-1).  In a Mississippi battle Saturday, Southern Miss (0-1) hosts BCSP No. 4 Alcorn State (1-0) at 6 p.m. while down in Florida, Miami hosts Florida A&M (0-1) at 7 p.m. In South Carolina, BCSP No. 3 South Carolina State (1-0), coming off a big win over Benedict, plays (12:30 p.m.) at Clemson (0-1).  Georgia tussles have Shorter (0-0) hosting Paine (0-0) Thursday in Rome, Ga. at 7:30 p.m. while on Saturday, Georgia Southern (0-1) hosts Savannah State (0-1) at 6 p.m. and Valdosta State (0-0) hosts BCSP No. 7 Albany State (0- 0) at 7 p.m. Delaware State (0-1) is in Newark, Del. looking for its rst win ever vs. Delaware (0-1) at 6 p.m. Two PSAC teams host CIAA teams Satur- day as Indiana (Pa.), ranked 23rd in the D2foot- ball.com poll, takes on St. Augustine's at 12 noon and California (Pa.) faces Virginia State at 1 p.m. Local, in-state battles loom 1.   The number of black college

players on opening day active and

practice rosters is down by three

from 45 to 42 from a year ago asthe 2014-15 NFL season kicks

off with Thursday's match up of

Super Bowl champion Seattle and

Green Bay.

A couple of veterans who

have spent their entire careers

with one team now have new

residences. Seven (7) rookies

made opening day rosters includ-

ing four on active rosters.

Former Howard standout

Antoine Bethea, who spent the

rst eight years of his career with

Indianapolis, is now in San Fran-

defensive end Jason Hatcher

who spent his rst eight years in

Dallas, is now with rival Wash-

ington.

  Amongst the rookies, for-

mer Tennessee State offensive

lineman Kadeem Edwards, a

fth round pick of Tampa Bay in

this year's draft, made the Buc-

caneers active roster. The rest of

the rookies on active rosters were

undrafted.

They include former Mor-

A number of tough and pivotal in-state and

local showdowns highlight the 39-game black

college schedule for the rst weekend o f Septem-

ber.

In North Carolina, two Div. II playoff par-ticipants and nationally ranked teams will tangle

when two-time CIAA  champion and BCSP No.

5 Winston-Salem State (0-0), ranked 17th in the

D2football.com poll, opens the season Saturday

(6 p.m.) hosting 18th-ranked UNC-Pembroke (0-

0). UNCP beat the Rams 25-21 last year to open

the season en route to a 9-2 nish that earned the

Braves their rst appearance in the playoffs.

The UNCP contest was the only regular sea-

son game that WSSU QB Rudy Johnson did not

start last season. Johnson took the controls af-

ter that game and led the Rams to nine straight

wins and its third straight playoff berth. Johnson

is back to lead the Rams but the game will also

feature the debut of heralded WSSU quarterback

Phillip Sims who is expected to see playing time

behind him.

Elsewhere in North Carolina Saturday, UNC

Charlotte (1-0) goes uptown to face 0-0 Johnson

C. Smith (1 p.m.), North Carolina Central (0-

tionally ranked Coastal Carolina (1-0) at Aggie Sta-

dium.

Both teams are coming off big wins. A&T

rushed for 307 yards and ve TDs in humbling Al-

abama A&M 47-13 Saturday in the MEAC/SWAC

Challenge in Orlando. Coastal rolled up 434 yards

of offense in downing The Citadel, 31-16. Coastal

is ranked sixth in the FCS coaches poll and fth in

the Sports Network poll.

Two Virginia FCS games will match schools

looking for their rst wins as Norfolk State  (0-

1) hosts Liberty (0-1) at 4 p.m. and BCSP No,

10 Hampton  (0-1) hosts nationally ranked (21st

Sports Network ) William & Mary (0-1) at 6 p.m.
