Black Edge is the story of the billionaire trader Steven A. Cohen, the rise and fall of his hedge fund, SAC Capital, and the largest insider trading investigation in history.

According to American Heiress author Jeffrey Toobin, it is “a tour de force of groundbreaking reporting and brilliant storytelling, a revealing inside account of how the Feds track a high-profile target – and, just as important, an unsettling portrayal of how Wall Street works today.”

Kolhatkar is a former hedge fund analyst and current staff writer at The New Yorker where she writes about Wall Street, Silicon Valley and politics, among other things. She has appeared on CNBC, Bloomberg Television, Charlie Rose, PBS NewsHour, CBS, NPR, as well as podcasts and live conferences. Ready for a mystery-solving, puzzle-cracking team game night at

the Club on Tuesday, May 16, at 5:30 p.m.? Puzzle designer Sandy Weisz, founder of

the Mystery League and whose puzzles have been featured on Will Shortz’s NPR Sunday Puzzle, will lead a game night that is all about teamwork to solve puzzles based on clues, codes and out of the box thinking. Sandy’s scenario: Your team is presented with a locked briefcase and must find a way (solving a puzzle) to break into it and use what spills out (a newspaper, a magic wand, a Bible, a calculator, a wallet, a pile of stocks, a Wonka bar, you get the picture) to identify and solve 10 parallel puzzles and, ultimately, the code to a safe. Players will be broken up into teams of 8–10 (or sign up as a team). A team can usually solve the game in two hours.

Bring your daddy dear and your sweetest self to

The Butterfly Ball is the go-to event this spring for dads and daughters.

Facepaint artists, a totally cute over-the-top buffet with sweet dessert fantasies, the cutest fellow Hello Kitty aficionados and a rocking time await you.

For those in the KNOW, Miss Kitty White AKA Hello Kitty was born in London, England on November 1. She loves her family, her twin sister Mimmy, her Mama who bakes lovely apple pies and tarts and her dad, George, a funny, kind and generous person (much like yours). In school, her favorite subjects are English, music and art. In Japan, two theme parks are named in her honor.

g o l f s o c i e t yUsually, when it comes

time to pen the invitation to the Golf Society Spring Kick-Off, I write of scotch, snow, a fire in the hearth and longingly dreaming of spring golf. This year with

the unprecedented absence of snow in Chicago during January and February, many of us have been able to scratch our itch for the game. This in no way inhibits my ability to include a dram of scotch in the text (or on my desk whilst I write). It does, however, alter the subject of my winter reading and, as a result, of my Bernard Darwin plagiarization:

I do not know what anonymous genius invented the expression ‘good useless golf,’ but he said in three words what we most of us say in far too many when we have just lost a match. Indeed, I fancy that he said it, not with any conscious desire of turning a phrase, but in the hope of checking a flood of lamentable explanation that did not interest him.

Those three words generally imply an essential futility in the neighborhood of the green and an incapacity to take chances. We may spurt, but we always wait just too long before doing so. We are never beaten by much, but we are always beaten.

The opposite of this admirable phrase is less often heard, and yet ‘bad useful golf ’ conveys just as pithily and distinctly a common state of affairs. No single tee shot is clearly hit: the ball is, as a rule, smothered or half-topped, and has a touch of slice on it, and yet it always evades the bunker by inches. The iron shots are poor things, mistimed and pushed out; still they scramble onto the green somehow; generally by means of a lucky kick. And the putting and chipping from off the edge of the green are, of course, beyond reproach. The doubtful puts are all holed, and two or three long ones stagger into the cup.

If this bad useful golf is to be as useful as possible we should observe certain rules of conduct. We should accept it for what it is, and not try for the moment to improve upon it. We should say with somebody in the Battle of Lake Regillus, ‘The gods, who live forever, are on our side today,’ and leave the matter in their hands accordingly.

Please join your fellow Club members for the Golf Society’s annual spring kick-off and Masters viewing party at the Club on Thursday, April 6, beginning at 5 p.m. Golf Society members as well as those interested in taking a look are invited for an evening of food, drink, exaggeration and all of the

usual elements of the Club’s finest society’s bonhomie. Hosted by yours truly and my faithful sidekick, Ed Tindall, you can expect to learn about our newest partnership with the Western Golf Association and the Evans Scholar Par Club program. We’re also excited to lay out an outline of 2017’s exceptional schedule. Beginning with Westmoreland, Exmoor and Butler National, we expect to have an enjoyable season including the Michigan trip before culminating with the club championship at Skokie Country Club.

The Golf Society is a vibrant group of fun-loving members including golfers of every ability. If you’re not a member, please come check us out!

My scotch glass nearing empty I’ll simply wish all of us a season of “bad useful golf” and great fun under the sun and on the fairways. Please contact Ed at 312.696.2230 or [email protected] for more information on the society.

Rob Fisher of Fisher Family Vineyards

Join us on Wednesday, April 19, as we welcome Rob Fisher, general manager of

Fisher Vineyards, for a winemaker dinner. For decades the words “body by Fisher” were affixed to many of Detroit’s finest vehicles and from that beginning came the creation of Fisher Vineyards, founded by Fred Fisher in the 1970s. From an initial parcel in the Mayacamas Mountains in northern California, Fisher now holds some of the very best mountain estate vineyards including parcels that parallel the legendary Eisele Vineyard. Producing primarily world class single vineyard Chardonnay and Cabernet, the wines consistently scored in the mid to high 90s by Wine Spectator and Advocate. Our dinner will feature a broad representation of the wines with a focus on the big Cabs which are coming off several superlative vintages. Chef Mark Baker will create a vineyard-inspired menu and include a light reception prior to the dinner. This will be a terrific evening as we hear firsthand Rob’s family story and his vision for the future.

Domaine Drouhin & Maison Joseph DrouhinOn Wednesday, May 10, we welcome Laurene

Drouhin for a dinner featuring the exceptional Oregon wines of Domaine Drouhin and the renowned Burgundies of Maison Joseph Drouhin. Drouhin, founded over a century ago, is recognized as one of France’s leading Burgundy houses and encompasses some of the very best vineyards in Burgundy. Along with this history, it also was visionary in recognizing very early on (the 1970s) that Oregon would replicate many of the conditions that make Burgundy so special – mainly terroir and climate. At our dinner, Laurene Drouhin, daughter of winemaker Veronique Drouhin-Bass, will guide us through the rich history

on both sides of the pond. We will pair a Northwest-inspired menu by Chef Baker with these exceptional Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.

The Club is pleased to present Chicago-based painter Joyce Polance in a solo exhibition of new work. Polance’s works grapple with the dichotomy between chaos and control and emote an electric sense

of energy, outpouring of tension and unending movement. Paint swirls, slides and cuts across her canvas works in a thick terrain of texture and color. Witness the magnetic quality of Polance’s painting practice in this exhibition of new works.

Griffin of the Month – Paul Sanders

Being a member since November 2015 has allowed me great use of the Club’s many outlets. I like athletics because I am able to connect with other members and am now part of the A.M. Fit Crew which has

increased my social interaction. I also enjoy squash, swimming and massage with Lyonel. My co-workers always ask me if we can go to lunch as we love College Hall! Dining has proven to be the best with after work food, summer cocktails in the Gallery and winter holidays loved by the family. Love is not the word for the New Year’s Open House … and now looking forward to the Black and White Ball. The Library is a frequent place I visit and often host business associates for small meetings. I’ve had two out-of-town guests stay in the overnight rooms … both reported five-star service and loved the rooms. You can’t beat the value for all that’s here.

Thanks to all our sponsors, patrons, volunteers and the WCO tournament committees for making 2017 such a fabulous event.

Congrats to Savi Pai (above, left) for recognition as this year’s Windy City Open Women’s Leadership Award Honoree for her engagement this year: in squash, at JP Morgan where she works, and in the community.

In her acceptance, Pai said she grew up believing: “I am as good as boys, I can compete with boys, and I am as smart and determined and as focused as boys.” And that she liked winning. And that winning made her confident.

At the Club, Pai said she learned how to make winning choices as a group, and how diverse points of view are embraced and lead to better outcomes, qualities she also sees at J.P. Morgan Chase where she has experienced a culture of positive collaboration across the entire bank in all lines of business. And where she has learned that if you want it, you have to be a stakeholder in it.

As tennis legend Arthur Ashe said: “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

And as Pai says: “Get involved, be engaged, create your community and do it collaboratively.”

i n c o n v e r s a t i o n

This month we caught up with Nina G. Stillman because she is celebrating her 40th year of membership this month (April 12, 1977 to be exact). Plus she was among the first 10 women to join the Club.

Nina is an employment and occupational health defense

attorney and spent 31 years with Vedder Price, 10 with Morgan Lewis and one with Scharf Banks before retiring in 2015. She is now chair of the board of trustees of the Merritt School of Music. And says she has never been happier. Why? Because she now has time: to work out, to lose weight, to engage in community activities.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories here at the Club?

A: Both my niece and my nephew tied the knot in the Michigan Room. And I held a Venetian masked ball 60th birthday for myself there as well.

Q: What was the deal in 1976 when you were approached by a Club subcommittee member investigating admitting women to the Club?

A: Well, I learned that the original objections boiled down to three: Some men liked swimming in the nude; some were worried that the squash courts would be overcrowded. And some wanted to preserve a men’s only dining room. Pick your battles I felt! These were mostly non issues, and I suggested the Club just admit women in full. Let the Grill be all male and close the pool to women at mid-day.

Q: And then? A: The first 10 women elected were each

proposed by the existing board, who wanted to start with a small critical mass to reassure the older members, because they knew it would be traumatic and that there would be glitches.

Q: What sort of memories do you have of the “old” days?

A: Before women were admitted as members, there was a “ladies dining room” (now the Bar) with red flocked wallpaper … women had to use the petite staircase … the first women’s locker room was a pre-fab “cage” on the 7th floor … soon Cathedral Hall got shut for renovations and dining never went back to separate rooms for men and women.

Q: And what was the Club like, once women were admitted?

A: The Club was very good and very welcoming.

Nina Stillman, 1980s.

Women became fully integrated right away at every level: sports, programming, committee and board involvement.

Q: What were the other clubs up to?

A: Standard and Union League clubs came later (Union League got a “no” for an answer twice when they asked the

membership if they wanted to admit women. The third time they asked if they wanted to violate a Chicago city ordinance banning sex discrimination at private clubs, and bingo, women were in).

What we love from this is how you can see that the University Club is trailblazing in its embrace of women, and that members like Nina stay for 40 years. We are proud that the Club’s greatness inspires this sort of loyalty. We are leading edge in the club industry due to our welcoming stance and our commitment to all members. Thank you Nina!

The Civic Affairs Society presents FBI Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Michael Anderson as keynote speaker at a lunch at the Club on Wednesday, June 7, at 12 p.m. All members are invited to hear SAC Anderson speak about investigations of violent crime, public corruption, government fraud, national security and civil rights.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the domestic intelligence and security service of the USA, which simultaneously serves as the nation’s prime federal law enforcement agency.

In 2015 Director James Comey announced his appointment of SAC Michael Anderson of the Chicago Division. Anderson began his career as a special agent with the FBI in 1995, and has served in five different field offices and FBIHQ. Among other matters, Anderson investigated Washington DC super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff and Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson, and he oversaw fraud and corruption special initiatives in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq/Afghanistan wars.
