Eric Wilder returns to Gualala Arts with a new exhibit titled “Basket Patterns”. Known for his bold designs, colorful drawings, and sense of history, Wilder’s exhibit, in the Elaine Jacob Foyer, will compliment the Bay Area Basket Makers exhibit in the Burnett Gallery.

A member of the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians, Eric Wilder grew up on the Kashia Reservation, the grandson of Essie Parrish, the last spiritual doctor of the Kashia, from whom he learned traditional teachings as well as songs, dances, and crafts. Although interested in art from an early age, he says he “finally got a break” into a professional art career when he entered and won a comic book store’s drawing contest. From there, Wilder began creating graphic art for software companies and developing games for Lucas Art and MTV. His career in gaming drew on his abilities as an animator, character designer, storyboard artist, and concept artist in developing games like Stars Wars Phantom Menace and Celebrity Death Match. Many members of the Mendonoma coastal community will have seen Wilder’s work in various galleries and shops and at Art in the Redwoods. With this exhibit, Wilder will introduce viewers to his most recent works of art.

Traditional techniques get contemporary interpretations as members of the Bay Area Basket Makers transform a variety of natural materials, handmade papers, found objects and uncommon fibers into vessels, baskets and sculptural forms.

The Bay Area Basket Makers Guild (BABM) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1984 by two basket makers who saw

the need for supporting and developing a growing interest in basketry as both craft and art form. The guild serves as a source of information and inspiration and provides a means of communication among basket makers.

Currently, BABM has 78 members, of which more

than half are active in guild activities. Most are from the greater Bay Area, but some now live in Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon and Utah. Membersʼ skills range from beginner to professional, and new members at all levels of expertise are welcome. Some make baskets for fun and as a hobby, while others work as professional artists, exhibiting their work in local, national and international venues. Many have been recognized and have won awards for their work. One member holds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the smallest, lidded pine needle basket – made out of one pine needle. Some members are also well-known and well-loved instructors.

Baskets can be constructed from an amazing variety of materials, using many different techniques. Some BABM basket makers like to specialize in a specific technique and with specific materials, and some use traditional techniques such as plaiting and coiling with traditional, natural materials.

Others use traditional techniques with unusual natural and recycled materials, including telephone wire, plastic bags, fabric, cable ties, handmade paper, kelp and horsehair. Still others use nontraditional techniques, and some like to try everything at least once, coming up with imaginative styles and combinations. Any material that can be woven into a vessel can be experimented with, much to the delight of all members.

In September, the Dolphin Gallery will welcome photographer Bill Oxford for a month-long exhibit. An opening reception is planned at the gallery for Saturday, September 7th from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Working in his family’s printing and engraving company in Miami, Bill’s first exposure to the graphic arts was compelling. “I was captivated, from a young age, by the beauty and synergy of classic typography, illustration and photography of the 1950s and 60s,” says Bill.

Upon graduating college with a BA degree in mass communications, he worked as an art director for some of the area’s leading advertising agencies — winning numerous awards for his campaigns.

His passion for surfing, motocross racing and the lure of California impelled Bill to move to San Diego in 1986 where he started an advertising design firm specializing in the marketing of technology-based companies. For over 25 years, The Oxford Group was a leading brand development company in the area.

“In 2014 I was ready for a change — a simpler life, so I started shooting stock photography for Getty Images, the largest stock licensing agency in the world,” says Bill. Success came quickly so he closed his design firm and moved to The Sea Ranch where he continues to shoot for Getty and uploads to his portfolio of over ten thousand images for sale online worldwide.

Surrounded by the beauty of nature and stunning homes of the area, he soon aimed his lenses toward landscapes, seascapes and architectural photography. Bill states, “I love the challenge to learn new shooting techniques for capturing images that connect with people. I never feel my work is great. I have ideas of what GREAT looks like… and that is what continually drives my passion for what I do.

A Special Sunday Afternoon Musical Performance in the Redwood Grove.

The Black Irish Band: A Special Sunday Afternoon of Music in the Redwood Grove Sep. 29.When you take Celtic, Spanish, and Italian Music, and mix it up, you get the true nature of the Black Irish Band.

For twenty-five years this band has created an original sound that no other band has. With over 500 concert performances to date and airplay around the world, the band has kept very busy spreading their brand of progressive folk music to a large audience. Performing both traditional and original music, the band is very focused on presenting acoustic music in a very exciting up-beat way that appeals to all ages. The band has written and recorded over 96 original songs that appear on the band’s twenty-five CD recordings. Many of the original works written by the band are based on Celtic history.

Hailing from the historic Gold Rush Country of America, the four member Black Irish Band has a musical style that is as timeless as the rugged landscape of the West, a tribute to the people whose lives were spent building the world we now take for granted. The band has a large compliment of traditional maritime and railroad music, as well as ethnic tunes in their repertoire. They excel at Irish & Scottish, Italian, and American folk music with an assortment of original songs and traditional western ballads. The band’s musical style captures the spirit of the immigrants of this land, the men and women who tamed the Wild West.

The Black Irish Band will perform in the Redwood Grove at Gualala Arts Sunday, September 29 at 4 pm. Tickets are $20 advance, $5 more day of performance, youth 7-17 free with adult. All tickets available at BrownPaperTickets.com or call 1-800-838-3006.

4th AnnualCajun Zydeco Fest

Once again, Lloyd Meadows’ Tri Tip Trio welcomes autumn to Gualala Arts with a Cajun flair. Enjoy Zydeco tunes and dancing, Sus’s New Orleans style gumbo and homemade desserts by local Soroptimists International all in the Redwood Grove beneath the twinkly lights! There will be beer and wine at the no-host bar.

Lloyd Meadows has played the Arts Center several times, and the music and the fun is always the same, offering those Cajun boot-stompin’ tunes that bring every last person onto the dance floor at some point.

Meadows and his bandmates consistently pack the house up and down the West Coast and from California to New Orleans with sizzling roots rhythms that are timeless and the execution of them relentless. One reviewer added “. . . Meadows’ affable frontman personality oozes through; he is a natural entertainer. Rollicking stuff with plenty of second-line beats.”

Purchasing dinner to enjoy before the concert allows concert-goers to find a seat 30 minutes before doors open, which could

mean the difference in having a place to sit for the entire evening! (But who can ever stay seated when this band’s on the stand?)

The show is Friday, October 4.

Whether you come for the music, or you come to dance or you come for dinner you know it’s going to be a great evening.

Global Harmony and Fred Adler present “Jazz In The Autumn” featuring Jamie Davis, vocalist on the Grammy-nominated album “All About That Basie”, accompanied by Larry Vuckovich, piano, and Jeff Chambers, bass.

Adler added “I am grateful to have the opportunity to present three captivating and unique world class jazz talents in the intimate setting of the Elaine Jacob Foyer, for the third annual “Jazz in the Autumn” concert.

Classic vocalist Jamie Davis is one of the few jazz bass/baritone rich voices performing today. His sound evokes the timeless timbres of historic singers such as Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams (famous with the Count Basie band) and also the revered entertainer Lou Rawls.

Davis will be joined by the consummate accompaniment of world acclaimed pianist Larry Vuckovich. Both performers are music masters who have recently sold out shows at such prestigious Bay Area venues as Oakland’s Yoshi’s and Woodside’s elegant Filoli on the San Francisco peninsula.

Larry will also treat the audience to solo piano gems from his repertoire of enchanting, lyrical piano favorites.

San Francisco’s versatile and sought after bassist Jeff Chambers’ biography of collaborations reads like a virtual “who’s who” in jazz. It includes accompanying legends such as trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and pianist

Les McCann. His taste and timing are impeccable.

“I promise that this will be another historic intimate jazz concert at Gualala Arts Center.” Fred Adler, KTDE, 100.5 FM

CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES | GUALALA ARTS CENTER

The six-performance regular season begins October 13. The series includes both artists new to our stage as well as the return of several all-time favorite ensembles. All performances are at 4 pm.

The Manhattan Piano Trio opens the 2019-2020 season October 13. The Trio is one of the most creative, exciting, and dynamic young ensembles in America. For this performance, veteran member and pianist Milana Strezeva joins forces with colleagues Solomiya Ivakhiv, violin, and Sophie Shao, cello, to thrill our audiences.

Award-winning Russian violinist Nikita Borisevich and pianist Margarita Loukachkina perform November 10. Borisevich is known for the precocious depth and sensitivity in his playing and utterly finessed technique. Loukachkina’s style represents the best traditions of the Russian Piano School—flawless technique, impeccable

sense of style and beautiful tone.

Eric Kritz and Friends take the stage January 19. Kritz is an outstanding clarinetist and joining him are Carolyn Steinbuck, piano, Marcia Lotter, violin, Tammie Dyer, violin, Jeff Ives, viola, and Marcia Sloane, cello. Their concert will feature works by Mozart, Bernstein, Milhaud, and 20th-century composer Robert Muczynski and a new work by Jeff Ives.

On February 16, Boris Andrianov and Dimitri Illarionov offer the uncommon pairing of cello and guitar and prove to all that the pairing is a happy one. Andrianov is considered one of the most gifted Russian cellists of his generation and Illarionov one of the most important classical guitarists emerging from Russia’s younger generation of musicians.

The Escher String Quartet, scheduled for March 8, has received acclaim for its expressive, nuanced performances that combine unusual textural clarity with a rich, blended sound. The ensemble serves as Season Artists of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Members include Adam Barnett-Hart, violin, Danbi Um, violin, Pierre Lapointe, viola, and Brook Speltz, cello.

The season’s final concert April 19 features 17-year old violinist Alex Zhou, the 2018 Gold Medalist, Klein International String Competition. Alex Zhou studies under the tutelage of Zhao Wei at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has won numerous awards and has performed with several orchestras including the California Youth Symphony.

Happy Birthday!

Celebrate at Gualala Arts October 20, 5 pm.

70th+ Birthday CelebrationSunday, October 20

If you are celebrating your 70th birthday anytime in 2019, this is the gathering for you! This informal evening offers a Salmon dinner menu as originally created by Rosemarie Hocker for the first community birthday celebration on Sea Ranch back in 1998. Birthday celebrants receive their dinner for free and for family or friends wishing to join in on the festivities, the dinner is $35. Please call Gualala Arts at 707- 884-1138 to make reservations for you and your guests.

The 70th Birthday Party is one of the lasting legacies of Rosemarie Hocker. It has taken place almost every year since the first celebration and continues to bring together a wide selection of people. Many find that friendships are made and/or renewed during the evening and a happy consequence is a strengthened bond with the local community.

Tables will be provided for birthday guys and gals to share their memories. Past presentations have included photo albums, wedding pictures, school yearbooks, trinkets, military service memorabilia, cheerleading pompoms and more. Volunteers help prep and serve the birthday dinner.

Each year, Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild members are “challenged” to create a quilt that fits certain parameters.

The 2019 Challenge is “One Red Square.” Although no specific style nor size is required, each entry must include a piece of, at the minimum size, a clearly visible, finished, 1-inch square of one of seven chosen deliciously primary red fabrics, including two silk fabrics, a dupioni and a charmeuse! Inspiration can come from absolutely anywhere or anything.

Members are challenged to consider applying the few, simple Challenge rules and to stitch and/or quilt their own interpretation in fabric in one,

two or three dimensions.

Quilts to be exhibited include traditional, modern & art quilts, clothing, and a variety of styles & techniques.

The show is not juried nor judged, so it encourages creativity at all levels. It is always a great thrill to see someone new to quilting/art quilts show their work alongside long-time quilters.

PPQG Quilt ChallengeOpening Reception October 4 • Exhibit Through October 29

This year the Birthday Celebration is pleased to welcome those who are or will be 70, 80, 90, or 100 years old in 2019.

Anyone who is not a celebrant but would like to participate as a host, waiter and/or chef, please consider joining us. That makes it a double party for us all!

Check back in the coming months for details on how you can volunteer for this event!
