AN UNUSUAL STORYBy Sunny Skidmore at KLID Radio 1340 on your dial

The story is from Vincent Fennelli, a syndicated talk show host on GCN and Liberty Roundtable Networks and is on KLID Radio

4 to 6 pm Monday through Friday.

Vince raises cows on his farm, near Springfield, MO. one year a little calf was born. The mother didn’t seem to want it or the other cows either, so Vince brought it home to his backyard. The family just loved him, and he seemed to really like them, so they fed him and played with him. They named him Jake.

He learned his name and came running when called. They would butt heads with Jake and play and hugged him. when he saw them go into the house at night he would sleep on the porch next to the door. He loved to eat tomatoes and if they said, “Jake, you want some tomatoes?” He went right to the bench where they were. Jake liked the two big dogs and they were his friends.

Time passed and Jake grew big. The Fennellis took him to the pasture to be with the other cows. but he wouldn’t stay with them. He kept to the fence where the Fennellis were, so they took him back to the yard. for a while things went on as usual and Jake was happy.

They had to block off the back porch as they felt Jake was

too big, but to their amaze-ment, that next morning they found Jake had climbed the stairs and slept on the upstairs

back porch. After a couple of months, Vince thought Jake was too strong to be butting heads, etc. Jake was returned to the pasture and put next to the cows.

Reluctantly he did go with them. Anytime the Fennellis went to the field, Jake would come to them. If the cows were kinda far away and they would

call Jake he’d come running. Just a few weeks ago, the cows were moved to another field.

Jake stayed with the Fennelis until all the cows were through the gate. Mrs. Fennelli said that Jake wanted a hug. They all hugged this big bull, then he walked through the gate.

In my opinion, the moral of this story

is: treat young kidswith love, care, and respect and these attributes will carry on into their adult life.

A BIT OF HISTORY OFPOPLAR BLUFF, MO

Hernando de Soto’s exploration party were the first European visitors to the Poplar Bluff area. When De Soto crossed the Mississippi River in 1539, he traveled to a point below the mouth of the St. Francis River and eventually passed through present-day Butler County. De Soto and his men traveled through what is now Ash Hill and passed just outside of Poplar Bluff. The French were the first Europeans to assert any terri-torial rights over the Poplar Bluff area. The French held the area until 1770 when it was ceded by treaty to Spain. Spain held the area until 1802 when it was returned to France. During this time the area of Poplar Bluff, as well as all of Butler County, held almost no European settle-ments up until 1819, wen the first white settler family moved into the Poplar Bluff area. It was reported that about 300 Native Americans resided in the area at that time. The earliest permanent settlements in what is no Butler County occurred in the early 19th century along the Natchitoches Trail, an old Native American Trail west of what is now Poplar Bluff on Ten Mile Creek and Cane Creek. Butler County was organized in 1849 and Poplar Bluff was chosen as the county seat. In 1855 the first courthouse was built and the town grew. Finally on February 9, 1870, Poplar Bluff was incorporated. In 1927 a tornado leveled most of the city, especially the original business district along Main and Broadway streets.

AbOUT DeAD PeNgUiNSI never knew this!

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica? Where do they go? Wonder no more!

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extreme-ly ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintain a form of compassionate con-tact with its offspring throughout its life

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the fam-ily and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their

vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into, and buried. The male penguins then gather in a circle

around the fresh grave and sing:

“Freeze a jolly good fellow.”

“Freeze a jolly good fellow.”

You really didn’t believe that I know anything about penguins, did you? It’s so easy to fool

OLD people. I am sorry, an urge came over me that made me do it!!!

Oh, quit whining I fell for it, too!!!

REMEMBER THIS IN NOVEMBER 2016Here is what happened, quietly, on January 1, 2015

Medicare tax went from 1.45% to 2.35%.Top Income tax bracket went from 35% to 39.6%.Top Income payroll tax went from 37.4% to 52.2%Capital Gains tax went from 15% to 28%.Dividend tax went from 15% to 39.6%.Estate tax went from 0% to 55%.A 3.5% Real Estate transaction tax was added.

Remember these facts:These taxes were all passed solely with Democrat votes.Not a single Republican voted for these new taxes.These taxes were all passed in the Affordable Care Act. aka Obamacare.If you thing that it is important that everyone in the U.S. should know this;

THEN TELL THEM!

“We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much. We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our val-ues, We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living but not a life. We’ve added years to life, not life to years.” ~George Carlin 1937-2008

CANE CREEK COMMUNITY CLUBTHE AGEE COMMUNITY CLUB

The Agee Community Club held their Christ-mas meeting on Dec-ember 4th, 2015 at the Bread Company.

Nadine Johnson was this month’s hostess. Club President Cathy Womack opened the meeting with the ladies repeating the club motto, “When the heart is full of love, the world is full of beauty”.

Nickey Orton gave the invocation. Jeanie Figgins read the devo-tional from Matthew 2:1-14 and also gave the secretary and trea-surers reports.

There was no old or new business. Roll call was answered by tell-ing about a Christmas you enjoyed when you were small.

Johnson gave a lesson from Woman’s Day magazine titled, “Count Your Blessings” by Leslie Goldman.

Christmas cards, candy, jewelry, stickers, ink pens, calendars, and apples were given to the ladies by Johnson and Womack.

Birthday cards were signed for Womack and Orel Smith who turned 99 on our club day. Figgins gave a CD to each lady that has a song she recorded a few years ago titled, “The Night before Christmas, Soldiers Version”.

Door prizes were given to all of the ladies, followed by a gift ex- change.

Hostess for January will be Nickey Orton. The ladies dismissed by repeating the club collect, “Be still and know that I am God”, Psalm 46:10. Jeanie Figgins, Reporter 785-1182

For our December 9th meeting we met at “Café on the Run” with 7 mem-bers present.

Ruth Anderson was our hostess and her devotional was taken from the Daily American paper titled, “Hi Lord, It’s me” about prob-lems concerning getting old. Roll call was some special Christmas gift. The thought for the day was “Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness you have good manners no matter what fork you use.” Emily Post

President Nancy Wujick opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. The secretary’s report was given by Marie Boxx and treasurer’s re-port by Wilma Rains. Both approved as read. Our ac-count balance was $8.85. We donated canned goods to Child Concern to be used as they see fit.

Nancy chose Laura In-galls Wilder as the famous Missourian for her report. There was a TV program

called “Little House on the Prairie.” She was an author and lived in Missouri in her later years. She was born 2-7-1867 and died on 2-10-1957 at Mansfield, MO. Nancy also had a “Little House” quiz to finish her report.

Wilma Rains offered the blessing for our lunch. Nancy Wujick treated ev-eryone to lunch as a Christ-mas gift. Ruth Anderson gave each a Christmas cof-fee mug and Marie Boxx gave each a bag of Christ-mas candy kisses.

Glenda Phillips’s game was Christmas bingo. She also presented each one with a new yearbook for 2016. Our theme for 2016 is family history.

Our next meeting will be January 13th at 11 a.m. at “Café on the Run” with Glenda Phillips as our hostess. Jean Hawkins will have the program. Roll call will be “What is your goal for this new year?” We are to bring last year’s Christ-mas cards for the project Christmas card box.

Written by Elisha Albright Hoffman (18391929)

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONGOne afternoon in 1887, music teacher A. J. Showalter dismissed his class and returned

to his rooming house in Hartsville, Alabama. There he found letters from two former students, each with a similar story. Both of them had lost their wives, and both wives had died on the same day. Showalter began writing letters of condolence. The Scripture that came to mind was from Deuteronomy, the assurance of God’s “everlasting arms” supporting us.

Then he wrote a third letter, to Elisha Hoffman, a hymn writer in Pennsylvania. Showalter suggested that Hoffman write a hymn on that theme. He even suggested the wording of the chorus. Hoffman responded quickly with three stanzas, and Showalter supplied the music.

With God’s arms beneath us, and His love surrounding us, we can find strength in even the most sorrowful situations. This does not mean that we deny the emotions of each moment: When a loved one dies, it’s normal and right to mourn. But we know that God is still in control—He has not abandoned us. And that keeps us going.

GoD LoVeS YoUReality is ultimately not what you choose,

but what your Creator has chosen. He has chosen to love you, to like you, to die for you,

to rise for you, to prepare your place in paradise, to walk beside you and in you right now.

He longs for you to see yourself as he sees you.

NUDge The bALANceA 91-year-old woman died after living a very long dig-nified life. When she met God, she asked Him some-thing that had really both-ered her for a very long time. “If Man was created in God’s image, and if all men are cre-ated equal, why do people treat each other so badly?”

God replied that each per-son who enters our life has a unique lesson to teach us. It is only through these les-sons that we learn about life, people and our relationships with God. This confused the woman, so God began to explain: “When someone lies to you, it teaches you that things are not always what they seem. The truth is often far beneath the sur-face. Look beyond the masks people wear if you want to know what is in their hearts. Remove your own masks to let people know who you really are.

When someone steals from you, it teaches you that nothing is forever. Always appreciate what you have. You never know when you might lose it. Never take your friends or family for granted, because this day could be gone in a blink of an eye. Protect and take care of your body as best as you can, it’s the one thing that you are sure to have forever.

When someone mocks you, it teaches you that no two people are alike. When you encounter people who are different from you, do not judge them by how they look or act, instead base it

on the contents of what is in their hearts. When someone breaks your heart, it teaches you that loving someone does not always mean that the person will love you back. But don’t turn your back on love, because when you find the right person, the joy that one person brings you will make up for all of your past hurts times a thousand fold.

When someone holds a grudge against you, it teaches you that everyone makes mistakes. When you are wronged, the most vir-tuous thing you can do is forgive the offender without pretense. Forgiving those who have hurt us is often the most difficult and pain-ful of life’s experiences, but it is also the most coura-geous thing a person can do.When a loved one is unfaithful to you, it teaches you that resisting tempta-tion is man’s greatest chal-lenge. Be vigilant in your resistance against all temp-tations. By doing so, you will be rewarded with an endur-ing sense of satisfaction far greater than the temporary pleasure by which you were tempted.

When someone cheats you, it teaches you that greed is the root of all evil. Aspire to make your dreams come true, no matter how lofty they may be. Do not feel guilty about your success, but never let an obsession with achieving your goals lead you to engage in malev-olent activities. When some-one ridicules you, it teaches

you that nobody is perfect. Accept people for their mer-its and be tolerant of their flaws. Do not ever reject someone for imperfections over which they have no control.”

Upon hearing the Lord’s wisdom, the old woman became concerned that there are no lessons to be learned form man’s good deeds. God replied that man’s capacity to love is the greatest gift he has. At the root of kindness and love, and each act of love also teaches us a lesson.“When someone loves us, it teaches us love, kindness, charity, honesty, humility, forgive-ness, acceptance, and all of these can counteract all the evil in the world. For every good deed, there is one evil deed. Man alone has the power to control the balance between good and evil, but because the lessons of love are not taught often enough, the power is too often abused.”

When you enter some-one’s life, whether by plan, chance or or coincidence, consider what your lesson will be. Will you teach love or a harsh lesson of reality? When you die, will your life have resulted in more lov-ing or more hurting? More comfort or more pain? More joy or more sadness? Each one of us has the power over the balance of the love in the world. Use it wisely! Don’t miss an opportunity to nudge the world’s scale in the right direction!

One detail that is never mentioned is that in Washington, D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monu-ment.

With all the uproar about remov-ing the ten commandments, etc., this is worth a moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this amazing historical information. On the aluminum cap, atop the Wash-ington Monument in Washington, D.C., are displayed two words: Laus Deo. No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn’t care less.

Once you know Laus Deo’s histo-ry, you will want to share this with everyone you know. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America.

Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignifi-cant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most success-ful nation in the world.

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four sylla-bles and only seven letters, possi-bly mean? Very simply, they ‘Praise be to God!’ Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inau-gurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation, Laus Deo. ‘Praise be to God!’ From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take n the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four ma-jor segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l’Enfant . . . a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lin-coln Memorial to the west.

A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, in-tended to carry a profound mean-ing for those who bother to notice.

Praise be to God! Within the mon-ument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the

memorial stones share a mes-sage.

On the 12th Landing is a prayer of-fered by the City of Baltimore; on the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quot-ing Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6. Praise be to God! When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848 deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direc-tion, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy ‘One Na-tion, Under God.’

I am awed by Washington’s prayer for America Have you ever read it? Well, now is your unique opportu-nity, so read on!

‘Almighty God; We make our ear-nest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy pro-tection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obe-dience to government; and enter-tain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fel-low citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dis-pose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pa-cific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy na-tion. Grant our supplication, we be-seech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.’ Laus Deo!?

When one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our nation’s capitol, he or she will easily find the signature of God, as it is unmistakably in-scribed everywhere you look. You may forget the width and height of ‘Laus Deo’, its location, or the ar-chitects but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or these words: ‘Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.’ (Psalm 127: 1)

It is hoped you will send this to ev-ery child you know; to every sister, brother, father, mother or friend.

They will not find offense, because you have given them a lesson in history that they probably never learned in school. With that, be not ashamed, or afraid, but have pity on those who will never see this.

INTERESTING FOOTNOTE IN US HISTORY

A Short StorY

Last week, I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads, he said, “God is good. God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen!”

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!”

Hearing this, my son burst into

tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentle-man approached the table.

He winked at my son and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my son asked. “Cross my heart.” Then, in a theatrical whis-per he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.”

Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his

for a moment and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman.

With a big smile, he told her, “Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.”

Back during the great depres-sion, Herbert Hoover ordered the deportation of ALL illegal aliens in order to make jobs available to American citizens that desperately needed work.

Harry Truman deported over TWO MILLION illegal aliens after WWII to create jobs for returning veterans.

In 1954 Dwight Eisenhower deported 13 MILLION MEXICAN illegal aliens. The program was called Operation Wetback. It was done so WWII and Korean

War veterans would have a better chance at jobs. Operation Wetback took two years to complete, but they deported them!

If you have doubts about the veracity of this information, enter Operation Wetback into your favorite search engine and confirm it for yourself.

Truman and Eisenhower deported over 15 MILLION illegal aliens 50+ years ago. Now, if they could deport the illegal aliens back then, we should be able to round up the 12 to 18 Million living here

today and DEPORT them. Again, to help provide jobs for returning veterans.

Why, you might ask, can’t this hap-pen today? Actually the answer is quite simple. Hoover, Truman, and Eisenhower were men of honor, not like the untrustworthy politi-cians of today that are always look-ing for votes!

Reminder: Don’t forget to pay your taxes!12 to 18 Million illegal aliens are now depending on YOU

FiFTY YeAR OLD MANURe SPReADeR$1 or best offer (WASHINGTON, DC)

Fifty-year old manure spreader. Not sure of brand. Said to have been produced in Kenya. Used for a few years in Indonesia before being smuggled into the US via Hawaii. Of questionable pedigree. Does not appear to have ever been worked hard. Apparently, it was pampered by various owners over the years. It doesn’t work very often, but when it does it can sling manure for amazing distances. I really don’t want it hanging around getting in the way. I would prefer a foreign buyer to relocate the manure spreader out of the country. I would be willing to trade it for a nicely framed copy of the United States Constitution. Location: Currently being stored in a big white house on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.

god bless America

A KEEPERI grew up with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen before they had a name for it. A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones.

Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away.

I can see them now, Dad in trou-sers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep.

It was a way of life, and some-times it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throw-ing things away meant you knew there’d always be more.

But then my mother died, and on that clear summer’s night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learn-ing that sometimes there isn’t any more.

Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away... never to return... So... While we have it... it’s best we love it... And care for it... And fix it when it’s broken... And heal it when it’s sick.

This is true. For marriage... And old cars... And children with bad report cards... And dogs with bad hips... And aging parents... And grandparents. We keep them be-cause they are worth it, because we are worth it.

Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a class-mate we grew up with.

There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special... And so, we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thinks I am a ‘keeper’, so I thought you should have the op-portunity to read it.

SociAL StAte AnYoneThere are 8 levels of control that must be obtained before you are

able to create a social state. The first is the most important.

ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

1. Healthcare – Control health care and you control the people.

2. Poverty – Increase the Poverty level as high as possible, poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are pro-viding everything for them to live.

3. Debt – Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. That way you are able to increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty.

4. Gun Control – Remove the ability to defend themselves from the Government. That way you are able to create a police state.

5. Welfare – Take control of every aspect of their lives.(Food, Housing, and Income)

6. Education – Take control of what people read and listen to - take control of what children learn in school.

7. Religion – Remove the belief in God from the Government and schools.

8. Class Warfare – Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more dis-content and it will be easier to take (Tax) the wealthy with the support of the poor.

THINK BEFORE YOU DONATE!!!!SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU MAKE CONTRIBUTIONS.

Instead, give it to ANY OF THE FOLLOWING. GO “GREEN” AND PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE IT WILL DO SOME GOOD!!

iSiS OR iSiLIn Colorado Springs Co. it’s hard to view a place where the population just breaks 150,000 when school is in session as anything else. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2010, the median income for a family here was $89,332. Along with Pueblo, Colorado, ours was one of the fastest cities to “snap back,” as it were, from the 2008 economic implosion.

Yet, there are homeless people everywhere. Their visibility occurred gradually but markedly within the last year. Many are middle-age people, and many are veterans. Over the same period, the average time for process-ing a new application for public assistance benefits (food stamps, Medicaid, etc.) jumped from under a week to 40 business days. They’ve also cut back access to case workers drastically, which probably stretches out the overall process even more.

The length of time it takes for Medicaid recipients to schedule an appointment with a primary care physician has increased from a day or two to several weeks. To get in to see some specialists, the wait is now one of months. This

is due to the millions who got dumped into Medicaid during the course of Obamacare’s implemen-tation.

Yet, our small college town, and another one about 40 miles east of here, are slated to receive an undisclosed number of Syrian ref-ugees– and according to Barack Hussein Obama, the counties concerned damn well better not balk at putting them on the food stamp rolls. The refugees are part of Obama’s nationwide Syrian refugee drop, which is now being hotly debated.

This week, our treasonous presi-dent flitted off to France to dis-cuss climate change – an issue that homeless, jobless and dispos-sessed Americans care so much about – with a bunch of other world leaders. As if it weren’t bad enough that climate change is a counterfeit issue that exists only so Western governments might more effectively enslave taxpayers and business economically.

Perhaps to defray any discussion of his failure to dispatch ISIS (which of course he has no inten-tion of doing), Obama said that the meeting in Paris to discuss

climate change was some sort of brave and audacious “act of defi-ance” in the face of ISIS, given its recent attack on that city.

It isn’t the first time the adminis-tration has proffered the notion that there’s some mysterious interplay between terrorism and completely unrelated factors. One may recall the inane blatherings of State Department spokesidiots Jen Psaki and Marie Harf, who have floated ideas such as pov-erty causing terrorism, and that if the climate wasn’t so screwy, the world’s Muslims might not go feral en masse and kill people.

All this is leaving aside the fact that the president in question cre-ated, armed, trained and fund-ed ISIS – or ISIL, Islamic State, Daesh, the Keystone Kamels, or whatever appellation they’re using this month to reference the bar-barians. Now, strategically dis-placed Muslims and strategically placed terrorists are forming a chaotic, angry wave from east to west – a wave that is cresting in Europe and, if Obama gets his way, will break upon America.

The world knows all of this, by the way; here, I am referencing the

incontrovertible body of evidence that Barack Obama is effectively the commander in chief of ISIS, and arguably a better one than he is of the U.S. Armed Forces. At this point, it is only in the West that this is not widely understood. So, given Obama’s designs and the world’s knowledge of them, all of the public debate over the White House’s anti-terrorism policies is nothing but theater. It’s for us. The boobs. The great unwashed, moronic masses. We are the pro-verbial “last to know.”

Our president’s policies have set America up quite nicely for a major terrorist attack, perhaps of a much wider scope than the recent attacks in Paris. These include everything from a refusal to evenhetorically associate Islamic terrorism with Muslims, to the nationwide Syrian refugee drop, to the clandestine importation of Muslims from destabilized nations in the Middle East and Africa, to an absolute refusal to effectively monitor who comes and goes in this country. Americans will die, and despite his feigned outrage after the fact, it will have been due to the deliberate intention of Barack Hussein Obama.

Firearm Purchases Set Another record

Background checks don’t stop criminals from getting fre-arms, but one thing is certain: the trend in the number of checks shows that Americans are acquiring firearms at an unprecedented rate. The FBI reports that the number of fire-arm-related background checks hit an all-time, one-day high on Friday, November 27, known in the retail world as “Black Friday.”

There were 185,345 checks conducted for firearm purchas-es, carry and purchase per-mits, and miscellaneous firearm related reasons last Friday. The previous high, 177,170, had been set on Friday, December 21, 2012, two days after President Obama announced that he intended to submit new gun control proposals to Congress and to “use all thepowers of this office” to restrict the right to arms.

Fortune cookie: you’ll have a better fortune n the next cookie. Our toaster has two settings: too soon or too late.

HILLS, RIDGES AND HOLLERSPaul Woods“My hunting days are

over” As the old song goes. At least for the recently completed deer season goes. My hunting is over for quite a while. It ended early in the season when I had a confrontation with a pregnant sow in my chick-en feed room.

When I went in for some feed, the place was a wreck. This old sow had been in the building before and knew that there was good food to be eaten. I spied her in one corner of the building and I took my eyes off her for a second. I was standing in the door-way and she went out as I was standing there. There really wasn’t that much room for both of us and she was just right size to scrape the side of my knee as she left out.

It didn’t hurt too much at first but as time marched on, the pain got worse and the next afternoon I went to the copper top emergen-

cy room. The doctor there said that it was as bad as he had ever seen a knee injury and said to see my doctor as soon as possible.

The specialist that I saw was Dr. Knight who had done replacements on both of my wife’s knees. After viewing my x-rays and taken some more of his own he came out and heard my story and examined the knee and as I pointed out the sorest spots. He took the knee and bent it just a little bit and he knew exactly where the pain would be the worst.

His diagnosis was a badly torn ligament in the knee and said it would take up to eight weeks to heal but no surgery was mentioned.

On the way home as with the trip to Sikeston my eyes were focused on any field that had water in it. looking for ducks or geese but I didn’t see any on either trip.

My grand-daughter-in-law was a good chauffeur. But after three weeks I am driv-ing anywhere I need to go. As a side note, I guess I was a little tougher than the sow as she died I feel she injured one of her babies and when it decayed, it killed her.

With the onset of winter, the outdoors news isn’t too much to write about. The next few issues of the column will have a lot of information about some of my hunting and fish-ingexperiences that have occurred in my 82 years of living.

This writing is about The UKC world wild coon hunt championship, which took place last fall in southern Illinois. Something hap-pened on the final night that I found it hard to believe when I saw a copy of the final scorecard.

In a competition hunt, there are reasons for a

dog to be scratched (Disqualified) The most common is for fighting, running off game or tree-ing game other than a rac-coon. The final cast had two black and tans two treeing walkers. Three of the dogs had grand cham-pion degrees and the fourth was a Nite cham-pion. The scorecard turned in to the master of hounds had three dogs scratched and the Nite champion female had plus points and did not get scratched for treeing an opossum.

In my years of competition hunting I never heard of a cast of that quality even having one dog scratched for treeing off game but these three dogs all were called at the tree and the possum was seen by the judge and participants.

With furbearer (raccoons) season open there are no scheduled UKC hunts in January that I know about.

Competition coon hunt-ing has been a passion of mine after I placed third in my first hunt. I have won trophies in Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Minnesota,Wisconsin, Georgia. North and South Carolina, Maybe there are other states where I have hunted and placed or showed a dog and won but after more than 45 years on the hunt circuit, It Is hard to remember every place I hunted I do remember some of the best and one that I put in a category of his own (the worst).

Cookeville Tennessee had the toughest hunt that I ever have encountered. We treed three raccoons in a three hour hunt and didn’t see any of them. That club is about 60 miles or more east of Nashville.

With the new year just beginning, I hope every-one who reads the next

few issues enjoys them. They will be about outdoor adventures and also a little of baseball and softball for good measure.

Remember that winter fish-ing can be rewarding and also dangerous. Walleye finishing along the streams in Missouri and Arkansas can produce good catches and also there is always the thought that the next bite could produce a “wall hanger”.

Fall crappie fishing at wappapellpo lake and also Clearwater Lake has been less than something to write about. If you do catch a good one or a mess of good ones, let me know.My address is 3717 Co. Rd. 415 Ellsinore, Mo. 63937

BrAiSeD PoSSUM FrieD rABBitPossum or opossum is a very fat little animal, hunted in the South after freezing weather begins. To scald, plunge animal into hot water just below the boiling point and hold him by the tail about 12 minute, or until hair will strip; place him on a table and scrape off all hair with a dull knife or pull hair out with fingers, being careful not to cut or tear the tender skin. Make incision from throat to hind legs and remove entrails; do not cut off heat and tail but remove brains and cut off feet; wash thor-oughly in cold water; if possible, hang

him up to freeze for several days.To braise, wipe with damp cloth, rub with salt and black pepper, and place in Dutch oven or roaster; sprinkly juice of 12 lemon (3 tablespoons) over top, add 1 pint hot water to pan, cover tightly and bake inmoderate oven (350° F.) about 1 1/2 hours, or until tender, turning meat when half done. Serve on not platter, place a red apple in the mouth and garnish with watercress; serve with sweet potatoes, boiled, pared and browned, cornbread, and guava jelly.

2 young rabbits (2 1/2 to 3 lb.) 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten3 cups rich milk 1 1/4 cups flourSalt 1/2 cup fatParsley 2 teaspoons currant jelly

Wipe dressed rabbit with a damp cloth and cut in pieces for serving. Combine egg yolks and 1 cup milk; stir gradually into 1 cup flour, add 1 teaspoon salt, and beat until smooth. Dip pieces of rabbit into batter and fry in fat in heavy frying pan about 15 minutes, or until well browned on all sides. Reduce heat and cook, uncovered, over low flame 30 to 40 minutes, or until tender, turning frequently. Serve on hot platter with cream gravy. Prepare gravy from drippings in pan, using remaining 1/4 cup flour and 2 cups rich milk; season to taste and add 1 tablespoon chopped parsley and 2 teaspoons currant jelly. Approximate yield: 6 to 8 portions.

What is on the other side?A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, “Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.”

Very quietly, the doctor said, “I don’t know…”. “You don’t know? You’re

a Christian man, and you don’t know what’s on the other side?”

The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the other side came a sound of scratching and whining. As he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room

and leaped on him with an eager show of glad-ness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said, “Did you notice my dog? He’s never been in this room before. He didn’t know what was inside. He knew nothing except

that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear.

I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do now one thing… I know my Master is there and that is enough.”

what Sen, TeD cruz said about President Obama and Obama’s take on the San bernardino attack.

With the president’s attempt to use the San Bernardino Ca. attack as a impetus for gun control, He doesn’t seem to know the position that the attack actually shows why now, more than ever, the second amendment must be a defended and the American people must be armed.Cruz said:

Unfortunately the goal of President Obama, is to consistently at every turn to look to weaken the constitutional rights of American citizens. And in particular, to undermined our constitutional right to keep and bear arms. You don’t get rid of the bad guys by getting rid of our guns. You get rid of the bad guys by using our guns. And rather than respond to radical Islam and terrorism with a commitment from the president to keep this nation safe to kill the terrorists instead. Barack Obama refused even to utter the words “radical Islamic terrorism”.

The gun-control push illustrates the misguided priorities of President Obama. He refused to stand up and do what is necessary to defeat radical Islamic terrorism to defeat ISIS, to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Instead he remains obsessed with disarming the American citizenry, of stripping us of our fundamental right to protect our homes our lives and our families. Moreover it must be pointed out that with the gun-control being pushed is a proven failure already. He pointed out the fact that California has some of the most stringent gun control laws in the country including expanded background checks, but none of it prevented the San Bernardino attack.

They Say It Takes A Minute To Find A Special Person,

An Hour To AppreciateThem,

A Day To Love Them,

But Then,

An Entire Life To Forget Them.

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside. “Your son is here,” she said to the old man. She had to repeat the words several times before the patient’s eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fin-gers around the old man’s limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly light-ed ward, holding the old man’s hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile. He refused.

Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxy-gen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greet-

ings, the cries and moans of the other patients. Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now

lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her, “Who was that man?” he asked. The nurse was startled, “He was your father,” she answered.

“No, he wasn’t,” the Marine replied. “I never saw him before in my life.” “Then why didn’t you say some-thing when I took you to him?”

“I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn’t here. When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed. I came here tonight to find a Mr. William Grey. His Son was killed in Iraq today, and I was sent to inform him. What was this Gentleman’s Name? “

The nurse with tears in her eyes answered, “Mr. William Grey………”

DiD YOU hAVe A DRUg PRObLeM whiLe gROwiNg UP?

The other day, someone at the store over on the Eastside said they read about a methamphet-amine lab found in a old farm house in the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question. Why didn’t we have a Drug prob-lem when we were growing up?

I replied, I had a Drug problem when I was young; I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family

reunions and community socials no matter the weather.

I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn’t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.

I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profanity, I was drug out to pull weeds in Mom’s garden and flower beds, and cockleburs out in Dad’s fields. I was drug to the homes of fam-ily, friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some fire-wood , and if my Mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would

have drug me to the woodshed.

Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, or think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin, and if today’s children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a bet-ter place.

God bless the parents who drugged us. Jack Burton

So you want the govern-ment to stop giving poor people free stuff.

Funny how you don’t care about $70 billion a year we spend on subsidizing Wall Street banks, The $38 bil-lion in subsidies given to oil companies, the $2.1 trillion that Fortune 500 corporations are stashing abroad to avoid paying US taxes.

And the $153 billion a year we spent to subsi-dize McDonald’s and Walmart’s low-wage workers?
