A Brief Look at the Collegiate 100 . . .

The 100 Black Men of America organization was borne out of the 100 Black Men of New York which was created in 1963. The national was formed in 1986 and formally introduced to the nation in 1987 in Atlanta,

Georgia. The 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. was founded in March 1994 and chartered in June 1994 as part of the national organization. The Collegiate 100 is an auxiliary organization existing on college campuses nationwide directly related to, and in turn shares the ideas and views of, the 100 Black Men of America. The goal of this organization is to assist 100 Black Men with its education, empowerment, and enrichment mission. The Collegiate 100 had its beginnings at Prairie View A&M University in Texas in 1993 by Frederick V. Roberts, then director of Student Activities. The original group included male and female students who provided leadership and mentoring for the students at the university. Roberts, being a charter member of the newly recognized Metropolitan Houston Chapter, Inc. of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. presented the idea to seek affiliation with the national organization. The chapter, led by Attorney Benjamin Piggott, accepted the proposal and presented the request to the Board of Directors of the 100 at its December 1994 Leadership Board Meeting. The proposal was unanimously adopted under the organization's Program Success and thus began the national launch of the Collegiate 100. The 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee helped to launch the organization. Some of the first organizing members of the Collegiate 100 at PVAMU were Robert Brown, Horace Bussey, Kevin Bussey, Lelar Corbett, Loretta Davis, Jason Jefferson, Christina Johnson, Marcus Lane, Derrick Ross, Charles Sloan, Michael Smith and Donna Tomlinson. The group attended the 100 Gala in Houston in 2004. The Collegiate 100 was reactivated at Prairie View A&M University on March 10, 2011 with the following officers and members: Travis C. Reed (President), Dymonique J. Burton (Vice President), Christopher J. Shelton (Secretary), Patrick Gray (Treasurer), David Brown (Communications Director), Frederick C. Fox (Marketing Director), Kelvin Washington (Membership Director), Vincent I. Ellis (Chaplain), Terrance N. Caldwell (Sergeant-at-Arms), Timothy Anderson, Jerry Battle, David Brown, Ross Hampton, Jerald Hubbard, Donlamasstino Hune, Justin Linton, Michael Love, Dominique Rand-Washington and Justin Whitaker; with Dr. Clement Glenn (Primary Advisor) and Frederick V. Roberts Esquire (100 Advisor). The 100 Collegiate Women of America was created as counterpart of the Collegiate 100 in August of 2011 by Frederick V. Roberts and chartered as a university organization in October 2011. Dymonique Burton and Travis Reed served were part of the nucleus in starting the organization and fostering a relationship with the Collegiate 100. The founding officers and members of 100 Collegiate Women are: Elexia Robinson-White (President), Jasmine Anderson (Vice President), Brittany Green (Vice President-Programs), Ayanna Allen (Treasurer, Alexandria Laws, (Recording Secretary), Brittany Phillips (Corresponding Secretary), Brittani Hunter (Membership Director), Janae Anderson (Communication Director), Alexandria Williams (Marketing Director), Jasmine Wilson (Auditor), Breanna Mays (Historian), Anissa Canady (Parliamentarian), Antonya Harris (Sergeant-at-Arms), Brandi Hamilton (Chaplain), Doris Adu, Tiera Anderson, Aundrea Boyd, Shadana Chaney, Dainisha Dilworth, Stevonnise Dunn, Amanda Hamilton, Jordyn Hines, Amari Holland, Carol Jenkins, Kiyah Johnson, Reondra Johnson, Sharneace Johnson, Breona King, Charnabria Leonard, Robin McNary, Ashley Mills, Raven Moore, Charity Nwankpa, Faydrian Pearson, Ariadne Pollitt, Robyn Shields, Charity Smith, Marcoyshea Smith, Lakevia Wallace, Troyla Washington and Jasmine Wiggins. Advisors: Mrs. Johnie Walker and Dr. DeLinda Marzette. The organizations have provided tremendous programs and activities at the have influenced the communities at large. Its mentoring programs at Arnold Middle School and tutoring at Navasota Schools are credited with helping to change lives of many young people. The ladies breast cancer awareness and visits and support of seniors at the Brenham Nursing home is highly appreciated and rewarding.

Greetings: The members of the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston Chapter, Inc., join us in congratulating the honorees for the Power 100 Awards and the new members on their formal induction into the Collegiate 100 at Prairie View A&M University. The Collegiate 100 provides a great opportunity for these young men to be mentored and to be mentors for young brothers in our community. It is also an opportunity for the young women to be mentored. We are very proud of them and look forward to their outstanding service and commitment to excellence in their programs at the university and the community at large. The 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston Chapter, Inc., has spent the past 19 years promoting and demonstrating leadership to the young men we serve and the community in which we live. Our members are dedicated to excellence in the areas of Mentoring, Health and Wellness, Education and Economic Development. We accept the charge of making a difference in the lives of young men and our community. We personally thank each member of our organization for their tireless effort, unwavering passion, and sacrificial commitment to volunteerism and supporting the members of the Collegiate 100. These men truly reflect one of our favorite sayings: “Real Men Giving Real Time”! We are grateful to the members of the Collegiate 100 for their participation and support of our Mentoring the 100 Way and Academic Enrichment Programs for the young men in Houston. These young men have given up some of their activities to provide real time for the young mentees. We also say thanks to the ladies for their volunteering with the Empowered Women of Houston program. Our sincere thanks to Mr. Frederick Roberts and Dr. Clement Glenn for their advisement to the Collegiate 100, and to Mrs. Shadia Washington for her advisement to the 100 Collegiate Women at Prairie View A&M University. We also express our thanks to the university administration for its support of the activities of the organizations. Turner, JD, Prairie View A&M University’s professors Dr. George Brown and Dr. Kelvin Kirby,

and the SWAC Championship Women’s Volley Ball and Men’s Track Teams. These persons are

deserving of much more because of their impact and influences in improving the quality of life for

others.

We take this time also to thank the parents and families of our new members for their continued

support and participation in the development of their loved ones.

Greetings: It is an honor and pleasure to welcome you to our 2013 Black Tie Scholarship and Awards Gala on behalf of the Collegiate 100 and the 100 Collegiate Women of America. Our theme, “Knowing the Value of US”, came to me one morning listening comedian Mo’nique on the radio stating how people asked her what is she going to do after winning the Oscar. She commented: “no one asked me what I was going to do after I won those six NAACP Image awards, and that award is by us.” We sometimes forget our value and respect of each other. This theme aptly describes why we chose the honorees to receive our highest honor, The Power 100 Award, namely, State Representatives Dr. Alma Allen and Sylvester Turner, JD, Professors Dr. George Brown and Dr. Kelvin Kirby, and the SWAC Championship Women’s Volley Ball and Men’s Track Teams of Prairie View A&M University. Tonight we honor these distinguished individuals because of their significant contributions in leadership, service, teaching and athletics to improve the quality of life for all citizens. We are also proud to introduce to the public the newest members of our organizations. It has been a pleasure and a love of labor that I served as chairman for this event. It has definitely been a fun, challenging and rewarding experience. This could not have been accomplished without the help, support and prayers of many individuals. We want to personally thank all persons and organizations who contributed to this event. Special thanks go to our major sponsors who are listed in the program booklet. Teams at Prairie View A&M University, is a testament to the quality and commitment to excellence

congratulate and welcome the new members of the organization.

We are deeply indebted to each of you and the members of the 100 Black Men of America,

Inc. and the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. for providing the opportunity to mentor

and assist you in your personal and professional development.

Mentoring, education, health and economic empowerment are the hallmark programs of the

100 Black Men of America, Inc. It is evident that you all understand this charge and continue to

meet the challenges with your participation in the various programs and events sponsored this year,

especially your mentoring programs at Arnold Middle School and Navasota Elementary through

High School.

Too often, because of historical factors perpetuated against African-American men and

women in this society, our men have struggled with transitioning from immaturity to maturity by

emphasizing and prioritizing other programs over educational excellence. We are honored to be

associated with a group of your people who understands the balance in their activities and have the

desire and determination to be the very best at what they do.

We are hopeful that you will continue serving as role models and ambassadors of goodwill

State Representative Dr. Alma A. Allen served on, the State Board of Education for over 10 years prior to being elected to the Texas House of Representatives. She began her career in education as a teacher at Parker Elementary School and Grimes Elementary School, Rep. Allen later became an assistant principal at Foster Elementary School and then served as principal at Peck Elementary School, Windsor Village Vanguard Magnet School, and G.B.M. Turner Elementary School. She also worked in human resources and central administration, and retired from Houston Independent School District after 39 years. Rep. Allen continued her career in education as an Adjunct Professor at Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University; and is currently a motivational speaker and educational consultant. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from Texas Southern University and a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston, as well as a certificate in administration and supervision from the University of Houston. Rep. Allen’s honors include Principal of the year, District 5, and Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Houston. Rep. Allen also received the Texas Freedom Network "Walking the Walk Award", from Governor Ann Richards, the Living Legend Award from the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators, and was honored in her hometown of Livingston, Texas with Alma Allen Day. State Representative Sylvester Turner was raised in the Acres Homes community in northwest Houston. He attended the University of Houston and Harvard Law School before joining the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski. He later founded the Houston law firm of Barnes & Turner in 1983. Representative Turner was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1988 to serve the people of House District 139 in Harris County. Representative Turner has served more than 24 years in the Texas House of Representatives. He is a member of the Legislative Budget Board; Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee; Chair of the Subcommittee on General Government, Judiciary, Public Safety and Criminal Justice; and a member of the House State Affairs Committee. He also chairs the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and the Greater Houston Area Legislative Delegation and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Dr. Kelvin Kirby is a professor of engineering and Deputy Director and Education Coordinator for the NASA sponsored research center at Prairie View A&M University, and associate minister at Mt. Corinth Missionary Baptist Church in Hempstead. Dr. Kirby holds the BS in electrical Engineering from Prairie View A&M University, the MS in Computer Engineering and Doctorate of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University. His doctoral work focused on establishing and managing multi-disciplinary research at small universities. He has expertise in executing government programs and human resource development, management and leadership skills. Dr. Kirby has a wealth of experience in managing multi-disciplinary research centers, human resource development, computer and communications systems and military leadership. Kirby also served as the associate vice president for student affairs at Prairie View A&M University. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Dr. George E. Brown, Sr. currently serves as the Distinguished Professor of Biology in the Department of Biology at Prairie View A&M University. He formerly served as Chair of the Department of Biology for 17 years, Director of the Health Careers Opportunity Program, Chairman of the Premedical Advisory Committee Director of the Summer Premedical Institute and was Elected Chair of the Faculty Senate in 2011. Dr. Brown earned the B.S. degree in May 1960 from Prairie View A&M University and was commissioned in the United States Army as a second Lieutenant. Upon completion of the military obligation, two semesters of graduate biology courses, two semesters of undergraduate physics and one semester of quantitative analysis chemistry were completed from July, 1963 to May, 1964. He later earned the Masters of Science in Microbiology, June, 1972, University of Florida, Department of Microbiology. He earned the Doctors of Philosophy in Microbiology, August, 1976, University of Florida. Dr. Brown is a member of the Prairie View Athletic Council, Athletic Club and a Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Membership in PALS, PVSNA, and ASA at Prairie View A&M University. Plans to earn the Masters Degree and PhD in Nursing at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Tarynn Skyy Adams is the 22-year-old daughter of Carol and Clarence Adams Jr. from Oklahoma City by way of Dallas. Major: Communications and Marketing - Graduation: May 2014. Membership: National Association of Black Journalist,

Director of PR. Hosted radio show The Journey, directed and produced television show KPVU-NOW for Channel 55. Student Brand Manager for Red Bull North America. Plans to obtain a Master’s in Intergraded Marketing.

Alajasia Apponey is the 19 year old daughter of Elizabeth and Steven Johnson from Natchitoches, Louisiana. Major: Nursing – Graduation: May 2016. Membership: Prairie View Student Nursing Association (Treasurer), Panther Advisor Leader and Student Government Association

(Senator of Community Development). Plans are to become an RN and a Nurse Practitioner and to own a Hospice Outpatient Services.

Myah Armstrong is the 21 year-old daughter of Tammy Lofton and Darryn Armstrong Sr., from Inglewood, California. Major: Criminal Justice. Graduation: December 2014. Membership and Honors: the Criminal Justice Club, California

Club, and Lions Club; Certified Student Leadership (CSL) Program; Contestant in the Miss Krimson and Creme’ Pageant; Dean’s List; launched PVUKNO, an Internet radio Broadcast at KPVU’S student radio; plans on owing popular radio show.

Armani S. Callihan is the 20 year old daughter of Cheryl M. Sinegal and Troy F. Callihan from Port Arthur, TX. Major: Psychology, minor in Criminal Justice; Graduation: May 2015. Membership: Panther Advisor Leader; Baptist Student Movement, NAACP, Psychology and Criminal Justice clubs (E-Board).

Licensed Certified Nursing Assistant; participant in the Mr. & Miss BSM Pageant. Plans to pursue Medical school at the University of Texas, and become a Psychiatrist.

Dominique D. Clark is the 19-year-old daughter of DeMonica D. and Victor E. Clark I, from Arlington, Texas. Major: Social Work/minor in Psychology. Graduation December 2015. Membership/Honors: Panther Advisor Leaders, NAACP, Social

Work Action Club, and the American Society of Black Psychologist. Honor Roll and Dean’s List. Plans are to earn a Master’s in Psychology from an Atlanta university and to become one of America’s recognized African American marriage and family therapist.

Skye Cotton is the 20 year old daughter of Maria Baietti and Carlo Cotton, Jr. from Pasadena California. Major: Animal Science. Graduation: May 2015. Membership/Honors: MANNRS club and Live Stock club; Deans List. Plans to pursue a career with the air force and to become a

pilot.

Benicia Curtis is a 19-year old daughter of James and Helen Curtis from San Jose, California. Major: Human Nutrition and Food, minor in Dance. Graduation: 2016. Membership and Honors: Kappa Omicron Nu Honors Society, National Society

of Collegiate Scholars, Student Dietetics Association, CAHS Ambassadors, Founder of Mentoring Incoming Freshmen (M.I.F.); Dean’s List. Career plans to become a Registered Dietitian in sports, eating disorders, and prenatal care and to coach a competition dance team.

Chelsea Daly is a 20 year old junior from El Paso, Texas and the daughter of Joseph and Michele Daly, who reside in Haymarket, Virginia. Major: English and Marketing. Membership: President Young Democrats, Student Government Association Senator, International

Students; and Panther Advisor Leader. Interned with the Anti-Defamation League in Washington, DC. Plans to pursue a career in Public Relations.

Candice Garner is the 20 year-old daughter of Chandra Garner and the late Ghandi Garner. She is a native of Houston Texas. Major: Sociology, Health Developmental Science. Graduation: May 2016. Being crowed UC Prom Queen just last

year, Membership: the Sociology Club, Club Chic (E-Board); and the Dean’s list. Plans to become a counselor for children raised in low income families.

Alexandria C.C. Hall is the 19 year old daughter of Maurice T. Hall and Anazia M. Andrus, military parents. Major: Nursing - graduation: May 2016. Membership: the Student Nursing Association, Panthers United (Secretary); Certified Student Leader. Plans to Master’s Nurse Administration from Prairie View A&M. Ultimate goal:

give back to her community and empower and mentor young women.

Celia D. Hinkson is the 22-year-old daughter of Stella D. and Julio A. Hinkson, Sr. from Killeen, Texas. Major: Communication Studies focusing in Public Relations and Advertising, minor in Sociology. Graduation: May 2014. Membership and Honors journalist for the Panther Newspaper and 1876 Magazine; National

Jeremy Butler is a 19-year-old student born in Houston, Texas to Candace Bennett. He is majoring in History and plans to receive his degree in May 2016. At Prairie View A&M University he is part of Campus Activities Board (CAB) and Mentoring Incoming Freshmen (MIF). He currently holds a 3.0 in his studies.

and begin a career with Harris County, Precinct One as a Project Manager to help build Houston.
