Who are we? Newton Main Street is an economic development through historic preservation organization. We operate under the Iowa Economic Development Authority but are fully funded by the communities we are a part of. We are 1 of 55 Main Street Communities in the state of Iowa
& one of thousands Nationwide!
We help to bring vibrancy back downtown. Our mission is to preserve the history invest in the future & develop pride in our downtown district through community involvement, volunteerism & private public partnerships within the Main Street district, the heart of Newton
We encourage, the live, work, play Downtown mentality. When your downtown is strong, your community is strong.
Since 2014 Newton Main Street Has: Developed Downtown Design Guidelines, these Guidelines help building owners keep the historic
integrity of their buildings, in turn helping our downtown remain apart of the National Historic Register of Historic Downtowns. Partnered with the City on creating the Downtown Improvement Grant, this grant helps building owners to historically appropriately improve the façade of their
building with matching grant funds. Partnered with the City on creating the Downtown Housing grant, this grant helps building owners to renovate or create updated and superior living spaces. With more
people living in downtown, comes more amenities in our downtown. We have received two Challenge Grants from the IEDA (Iowa Economic Development Authority) totaling $150,000, towards both the Maytag Hotel Ballroom and the building project located at 115 W 2nd St S. We have logged over 6,900 volunteer hours, valued at $171,595 invested through time and energy in our downtown.
We took over and grew the long-standing Newton Farmers Market. In the Summer of 2017, we partnered with U of I to restore 4 of the largest Murals in downtown.
These are just a few of the wonderful things Newton Main Street has done the past 5 years. We need your help to continue our work and make our
downtown a place we can all be proud of.
