Blackboard Grade Center is a Tool for

Providing Feedback to Students On Friday November 17th approximately 100 instructors attended the Blackboard Grade Center workshop hosted by Project GRAD, ODELT, and PASS. The promotional event featured five students who stressed the importance of entering grades in the Blackboard Grade Center throughout the term so that they can know how they are doing in their courses. In addition, five faculty members shared their use of the Grade Center and highlighted its value for helping students know how they are doing on their assignments. The Grade Center serves as a straight-forward way to provide students with feedback. ODELT provided a workshop on Grade Center basics and invited instructors to let us help them use Grade Center functions that work best for them.

Blackboard provides a rich environment for giving constructive, complex feedback including comments within a submission, points earned and levels of achievement in rubrics, and text-based feedback. You can also download student submissions, add your corrections, and attach them to comments.

New Box View completely replaced the Crocodoc (previous comments tool) in your course. Instructors will not be able to edit or remove existing Crocodoc annotations in New Box View as the annotations will be “burned” into a PDF during migration. The transition will not impact your course's rubrics or rubric data.

ware systems such as MS Outlook, Blackboard, WebEx, Qualtrics, Ban-ner, System SSO, office desktops, podiums, and labs. Use your user ID and password to login to all those systems. Be aware that once you login to any classroom, lab, or desktop comput-er you will remain logged in to all the above systems. 2. Fall 2017 Bb courses. By default, blackboard courses are scheduled to become available to students on the first day of class. 5. Request courses or sections to be merged using this procedure http://it.tamucc.edu/gethelp/pdf/blackboardmerge.pdf at least two weeks before the semester starts. Allow 48 hours for your request to be processed. Note: Courses and Labs cannot be merged. 6. To add a TA to your course, fill out and submit this form: http://it.tamucc.edu/gethelp/pdf/Add%20Role%20Request%20Form.pdf.

7. Familiarize yourself with the au-dio/visual equipment in the class-rooms. Media Services is available for tutorials and training on the use of classroom audio/visual technolo-gy. To schedule a training session, please submit a request to [email protected]. Please note that audio visual equipment has been updated in the Center for In-struction, Bay Hall, and Island Hall. 8. Inline Grading in Student Submissions Updates

Blackboard was recently updated to

Software as a Service (SaaS). The

update required that Bb be

unavailable from January 2-5, 2018.

The update will eliminate downtime

and enhance user experience. It

includes several new features and

enhancements and a slight

change in the look and feel

of the user interface. For full

information on changes go

to https://help.blackboard.com/

Learn/Administrator/Hosting/

Release_Notes/Whats_New

The inline grading of Bb Assignments transitioned from the current Crocodoc (current comment tool) to New Box View. The New Box View will support annotations on these file formats: PDF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PPT, PPTX, ODP. It will work with over 100 different file types, including video, audio, image, and programming code. After the transition, users can’t change the existing annotations made in Crocodoc as all annotations are read-only in New Box View. Users can add new annotations with the New Box View annotation tools, but they can't interact with annotations created in Crocodoc. The grades have to be posted before students can view annotations. You can add or edit New Box View annotations after a grade is assigned.

Reports on Students’ Activities in Your Bb Course

Four dynamic reports describing phenomena in your class are available in Course Management ->Evaluations->Course Analytics:

1. Course at a Glance: This report can help analyze how a course is designed, how a course compares to other course sections in the same department, and how the students are using the course.

2. Activity and Grade Scatter Plot: This report will create a scatterplot comparing the grade earned in a course with student interactions in the given course. It can help analyze how different student interactions do or don’t relate to the grades.

3. Activity Matrix: This report displays grade center and activity data to help analyze activity and grade patterns in a course, and help find students with different usage and performance profiles.

4. Course Submission Summary: This report identifies the last time students submitted to the course and the type of submission. It displays trends and numbers of submissions compared to the average across all students in that course.

Research Report. Every year the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) https://

onlinelearningconsortium.org/ creates a report of tracking online education in the

US. Their key findings reported in 2017 are: 1) A year-to-year increase of 226,375

distance education students represents a 3.9% increase over the previous two

years. 2) More than one in four students (29.7%) now take at least one distance

education course (a total of 6,022,105 students). 3) Public institutions command

the largest portion of distance education students, with 67.8% of all distance

students. 4) The number of students studying on a campus has dropped by almost

one million (931,317), between 2012 and 2015.

Flexible Certificate Workshop Options Respond to Faculty Needs

Meet Shivaji Kumar— TAMUCC EIRAC

The TAMU-CC Student Information

System, Banner, is being upgraded

to comply with new technological

standards. The upgrade includes a

modern user interface, enhanced

navigation along with process

management tools, and new

functionality across the student

platform. It will also allow us to run

Banner on any browser and on

mobile devices. There is no need to

learn a new application, just the

new interface. The upgrade will be

completed in 3 major phases:

Phase I - The upgrade of the Banner

administrative pages was done on

November 18, 2017 and allows users

the opportunity, for a limited time,

to use either Banner 8 or Banner 9

navigation to access available

student information.

Phase II - the upgrade of the

Registration Model is expected to

occur around mid-March 2018.

Phase III - the upgrade of S.A.I.L./

Self-Service is expected to take

place during Summer 2018.

The Division of Information

Technology will host drop-in

sessions at the library on January

9th and 11th for Faculty and Staff

to log in and view the Banner 9

Admin Pages and to ask questions.

For more information check out our

website:

ODELT’s Online Course Design, Development, and Teaching Certificates program is offered to support instructors as they integrate technologies into their courses to improve instruction and provide students with highly engaging learning experiences. Flexible scheduling allows instructors to earn their certificates in a number of ways. They do not have to commit to receiving the workshops in just one of the ways below. Rather they can flexibly combine the offerings in any way to ultimately receive credit for the entire program. 1. Face-to-face workshop series

offered several times per year. 2. `A la carte workshops offered

across both the Fall and Spring semesters.

3. An intensive online course available each Fall semester (3-credit hour equivalent).

4. On demand for a big enough group.

We welcome instructors in any single workshop at any time. The next offerings are across the 2018 semester. Schedules and registration are available on https://iol.tamucc.edu.
