Blackbox House Culford Mews, London N1 SOLD Blackbox House is a unique and exceptional reinterpretation of the traditional mews house. Designed by Form_art Architects in 2014, the house occupies a wonderful position on Culford Mews, a beautiful run of mews houses flanking a peaceful cobbled street in De Beauvoir. Many of the neighbouring homes have been individually designed and converted for personal use by resident artists and makers. From the street, the house appears as a dark facade of slim Belgian Vande Moortel brick punctuated with narrow horizontal and vertical windows. The entrance seems almost concealed in an adjoining black wooden wall. A lattice of wooden battens rises above the front door, enabling daylight to reach a private brick-paved courtyard, containing a mature birch tree that reaches up to the roof of the house and casts beautiful shadows, through the louvres, across the courtyard and ground floor spaces. themodernhouse.com [email protected] 020 3795 5920

An entry way provides access to the private courtyard. Theopen-plan living and dining rooms wrap the courtyard andare bathed in natural light care of floor-to-ceiling glazing, while the courtyard itself is characterised by slim VandeMoortel bricks and a beautiful, tall silver birch tree.

Inside, it is clear that the flow of light has been theorganising principle behind Blackbox House.Simultaneously developed as a house gallery and vice versa, the design is a continuation of Form_art's work with artistsand galleries, in particular their ongoing engagement withthe Tate. Galleried windows stretch up across two storeys, allowing for a subtle and dazzling interplay of light betweenthe louvres and the branches of the silver birch.

The floorboards are Dinesen Douglas fir and run across theground floor areas, culminating in a bespoke, handmadeDinesen staircase. A dining room occupies one side of theplan, with a narrow strip window to the mews and a wall ofexposed brick. An expansive living room is positionedadjacent and has an elegant Barbas Bellfire as its focal point,as well as a skylight overhead. The kitchen is positionedbehind the living room and has stainless steel worktops, integrated Gaggenau appliances and bespoke cabinetrythroughout. A guest W/C is positioned off the dining roomand introduces a bold splash of colour, with an orangerubberised floor and an original Barbican sink.

A dramatic Dinesen staircase with a large skylight overheadleads up to the first floor. There is a small landing at the topof the stairs leading to a bedroom on either side, thesmaller of which is contained in a white box that projectsover the dining area. It has a dual aspect views over themews and the courtyard, as well as an en-suite showerroom, lined in birch-ply with a red rubber floor. The masterbedroom, opposite, is excellently proportioned. It has awall of built-in wardrobes along one aspect, a long windowlooking down over the staircase and a large en-suitebathroom with free-standing bath and a shower. Thebathroom has beautiful views of the silver birch and thecourtyard below.

Founding director of Form_art, Alison Mclellan hasremarked of the project, "In contrast to the traditionalmews architecture of solid brick enclosures with tinywindows and little daylight, this design is filled with light, but still respects the contextual language of a 'solid box'."
