On Friday, sixteen Year 9 Plume Academy students attended the Blackwater Schools‟ „Student Voice Conference‟ for local Junior Schools Councils. The theme of the day was „Road Safety‟ and the Year 9 students facilitated the groups enabling them to participate in the activities on offer. Students were shown how to measure reaction times, distances for breaking, and what to wear to be seen on the road as a cyclist or a pedestrian. They were also shown the consequences of not wearing seatbelts and how „distracting behaviour‟ can be the cause of many accidents. Plume Students then assisted younger students to design posters, plan assemblies and prepare pieces of drama to be used with their peers when they return to their own schools. It was a very successful event with the message of „Stay Safe on the Road‟ being stressed in an appropriate and interesting way. The Essex Road Safety Officers, who were present, asked Plume Students if they were willing to become Road Safety Ambassadors and help to promote Road Safety in the Academy for staff and students and they all agreed. Students learned a great deal about organising and how to address a group as well as how to enable students to achieve the aims of the sessions they were running; we hope we have all been involved in helping to make Maldon a safer place! Congratulations and thank you to Year 9 for your excellent contribution to the event; you were wonderful role models and peer educators! NON - UNIFORM DAY Friday

18 March

in aid of:

On Thursday 3 March, our Year 8 girl’s football team went to

Moulsham High School to represent Plume in the Essex round of the CHELSEA FC FOUNDATION tournament. The team were a credit to

the school, and although they didn’t make it through to the semi-finals there were some great performances.

They played four other schools in their pool. One match they won convincingly with a final score of 6-1, including a hat-trick from

Hannah Bardo. They then went on to draw a game against a strong side from Havering, and mention must go to our super talented

defender Maya Croft. Unfortunately, they lost their two remaining games so did not progress to the next round.

Well done to the players - Mrs Bidgood - PE Department

On Wednesday 2nd March, ten Year 12 students attended a 'Stretch Day' at Anglia Ruskin University. This event was designed to give

students from state schools a taste of studying at top universities by offering them the opportunity to attend academic taster sessions.

These sessions were led by Oxford and Cambridge tutors, and academics from a range of other leading universities, and covered a

wide range of exciting subjects from across the arts and sciences. Our students enjoyed the opportunity to try out different subjects and to

experience learning at a more advanced level. Holly Tolson said of the day, “ We were provided with a lot of

information throughout the day about applications and general university life. Being able to speak to university students was really

helpful as they were able to tell us about their first hand experiences of applying and choosing courses.”

eMrs C Penfold - Plume College Team

On Wednesday 2 March 2016, Plume College

students enjoyed an assembly presented by Mr

Mugford (Churches Together in Maldon). The

Assembly was aimed at students intending to

go to University.

Mr Mugford discussed the new found

independence they will gain and how to cope

with the challenges along the way. Mr

Mugford also provided good advice on

budgeting, making new friends and settling

into University life. Students were also given

advice about cooking and healthy eating.

Each student received a booklet entitled “Beyond Beans on Toast” to help them create

new and exciting recipes.

Mrs Atkinson - Assistant Student Support

Manager Plume College

The Catering Department at Mill Road Campus provided almost 100 extra meals on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 March where mothers from Maldon Primary were treated to a delicious meal. KS1 & KS2 Students of Maldon Primary invited their mums to lunch to

celebrate Mother’s Day. Here are some quotes; “It’s so nice to walk in the footsteps of my daughter spend extra time with her and see what she has for lunch” “My son loved me coming to lunch with him; he was so pleased to show me what he does at school and at lunch time” “I think this is a wonderful idea, it’s different and so nice to see my daughters face when I arrived in the middle of her school day” “We had a lovely time and a lovely meal – thank you” The Catering Team at Plume yearly calendar is always full, back by popular demand and planned events for 2016: Father’s Day – June, Bring your Dad to lunch

Grandparents Day – September Bring

your Grandparents to lunch at the school. Mrs P Flight - Catering Manager

Catering News

On Tuesday 1 March, the Year 8 Rugby Seven's team travelled to KEGS playing fields next

to Broomfield Hospital for the Essex county seven's competition. Having had slightly more

practice than the previous year the boys actually understood the game in time for the

tournament this year. With a tough group playing against two grammar schools and a

private school, the side knew they were up against it and immediately found themselves

in a battle against Westcliff High School for Boys. A last minute try from Sam Johnson

wasn't enough to get back parity and the boys narrowly lost 15-10. The next game proved

just as tough against Southend High School for Boys but the boys managed to rally and

demonstrate some excellent skills to beat New Hall in the final group game. Progressing

into the plate competition the boys had to battle against Great Baddow in the semi-final, a

side they lost to earlier this year in the fifteen aside competition. Early tries proved crucial

as the boys built up an unassailable lead in the first half that Great Baddow were

never able to claw back. Having come through the tough semi final the boys would

have been forgiven for being tired and lack lustre in the final game but the opposite

happened. The boys were flying and tries came from all angles. The opposition couldn't

deal with the pace of George Atkins, Daniel Hiner-Rey, Sam Johnson, Toby Hume or Jamie

Dear who all ran in tries and the boys strolled home to win the plate competition

comfortably. This is a huge victory and a great success for the Rugby team to win the first County trophy for the year group......the first of many we hope!

Squad: Jamie Dear (Capt), George Atkins (Vice- Captain), Toby Hume, Sam Johnson, Daniel Hiner-Rey, Jack Whitaker, Tom Anthony, Kacper Banas, Spencer Cox, Bailey Webb and

Harvey Brown. Mr Saxton - Very Proud Team Manager!!

Update Fairtrade Fortnight Week 2 This time, the turn of Fambridge Road Tutors (and most of our Administration and Support Team) to be the recipients of a an early morning Fairtrade kit – complete with Fairtrade tea and coffee, Fairtrade sugar and a Fairtrade chocolate biscuit! This was ethically delivered by our Year 10 GCSE Citizenship students in a highly coordinated visit to every classroom during Wednesday morning registration. Thanks to Ms Mallet and her Personal Development team for this and for running Fairtrade awareness lessons over the two weeks for our students (the number of Fairtrade stickers still proudly worn at the end of the Fortnight rivalled any Trump/Clinton rally!!). Students at Mill Road continued to produce Beacon Of Hope Fairtrade lanterns and the results of the poetry competition should be announced next week. (See our website for more images). Keeping to the theme of this year we had a Fairtrade breakfast for our Mill Road students. In the early hours of Wednesday morning (well..7.45am), over 40 students enjoyed a breakfast of toast, cereal, fruit, juice, hot chocolate and muffins (all Fairtrade products) while discussing the different parts of the world the ingredients had come from. Thanks again to Plume Catering for a wonderful spread! Of course Fairtrade is an ongoing process and whilst trading with other parts of the world is a difficult and complicated process (see upcoming EU arguments!!), it is important that our students are reminded that the food and drink they buy and consume has its own individual story and the cereal eaten in a Maldon household can effect the standard of living of a farmer far across the world. Plume Academy continue to progress to the FairTrade Award for Schools. The Community Team

Another very successful event was held in

the LAIC’s to celebrate World Book Day. As

well as members of staff dressing as their

favourite book character there were also

over 150 members of staff who had

lanyards depicting their own chosen

character. This was to encourage chatting

about books during the Academy day.

The Reading Relay also took place with over

60 students reading and a total of six books

were read. This year everyone reading was

given a special bookmark

to commemorate the

event.

A special ‘Top Form’

linking to all our favourite

reads was held at

lunchtime at MRC with

two very competitive

teams from Year 7 and a

very supportive audience.

Thank you to everyone

who took part; it was

great fun!

LAIC Team
