Overview CHAI was founded in 2002 by President William J. Clinton and Ira C. Magaziner with a transformational goal: help save the lives of millions of people living with HIV/AIDS in the developing world by dramatically scaling up antiretroviral treatment. CHAI’s focus is transformational work that creates a fundamental change in the way actors approach and realize goals. To do this, the degree of impact of a CHAI program must be dramatic, the scale must be at the national or global level, the breadth must change the way others approach the problem, and the sustainability must allow for CHAI’s eventual exit without erosion of impact. Today, CHAI operates in 33 countries across the developing world and more than 70 countries are able to access CHAI-negotiated price reductions, vaccines, medical devices, and diagnostics. CHAI’s main program areas include Health Financing, Malaria, Health Workforce Planning, Vaccines, Family Planning, Cancer, TB, Hepatitis C, Laboratory Services, Applied Analytics and Essential Medicines. Recent Achievements CHAI played a leadership role in negotiating a breakthrough pricing agreement which will accelerate the availability of the first affordable, generic, single-pill HIV treatment regimen containing Dolutegravir (DTG) to public sector purchasers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) at around US$75 per person, per year. Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI)

EventCHAI will be hosting a presentation at LSHTM in Keppel Street LG80 at 12:40 on Thursday the 30 th November.

Recent Achievements CHAI played a leadership role in negotiating a breakthrough pricing agreement which will accelerate the availability of the first

affordable, generic, single-pill HIV treatment regimen containing Dolutegravir (DTG) to public sector purchasers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) at around US$75 per person, per year.

American Cancer Society and Clinton Health Access Initiative Announce Collaborations with Pfizer and Cipla to Increase Access to Lifesaving Cancer Treatment in Africa.

How We Work

Our ultimate objectives are to make healthcare available to all who need it, and to partner with governments and other stakeholders to strengthen healthcare systems and develop sustainable strategies to overcome obstacles to scale-up.

CHAI applies a unique business-oriented approach through three main programs:

Access Programs: CHAI’s Access Programs work with generic pharmaceutical companies and other suppliers to reduce the cost of lifesaving antiretroviral medicines, testing and diagnostic equipment, malaria treatment and nutrition.

Major Programs: CHAI’s Major Programs specialize in specific areas of need, including pediatric treatment, increasing access to care and treatment in rural areas, strengthening countries’ human resource capacity for health, and preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child.

In-Country Programs: CHAI assists national governments and their ministries of health to develop sound health care policies around HIV/AIDS, Financing, Malaria and Vaccines, strengthen management capacity, and implement cost-effective and comprehensive national responses.
