WARNING: This guide could be hazardous

to your waistline.

Or not so much. Because Block Island has, in culinary terms, grown up — and that means it’s up to diners whether to splurge on something rich and decadent or go light and healthy when eating out.

Part of the change over the last few decades has been an ever expanding repertoire of global influences on the island dining scene. No longer are restaurant goers restricted to the traditional Yankee idea of a gourmet meal — not that there’s anything wrong with boiled corn and lobster or scallops broiled with breadcrumbs, of course, and don’t worry, you can still find them here.

But perhaps you’d like to try that lobster in a breakfast omelette, over lightly dressed local greens at lunch, or in wontons with Ahi tuna for dinner. Don’t like seafood? If you feel like tucking in to some real barbecue at an outdoor picnic table, that’s no problem, either. Pancakes, crab cakes benedict, fresh-squeezed carrot juice, homemade donuts, sandwiches, falafel, pizza, antipasto, raw bar, sushi, pad Thai, fried chicken, mussels Provencale, fish and chips, Kobe steak, fish tacos, bouillabaisse, fresh seafood, seafood, seafood … it is all here, awaiting your order. The island now has more than 30 eating establishments, which run the gamut from casual take-out to fine dining. We also have ever-easier access to restaurants on the mainland, whether we’ve gone over to “America” for errands, are on the way to or from the island, or have simply stayed put on the Block and feel like having take out flown over. Try it, it’s surprisingly easy and fast.

And for mainland dwellers around New London, Block Island dining is now easily within reach, thanks to a special ride and dine offer from Cross Sound Ferry that will whisk you on the fast ferry to Old Harbor, give you plenty of time to wander, hit the beach and enjoy a leisurely meal, then take you home on the late ferry.

Hooray for Block Island’s restaurants, and hooray for all the fine chefs who sweat away in hot kitchens so that we can relax with friends on long summer evenings. From our forks to yours, here’s a celebration of all that makes Block Island a great place to eat.

P.S. You can also view all these menus on-line at www.blockislandtimes.com

Welcome to Block DiningBy Mike and Becky Ballard

We love to cook, and our Block Island Times column, “Everything but the Kitchen Sink,” is all about gathering

up friends and family and, with as little fuss as possible, enjoying a meal that will make any occasion a celebration. But everyone likes to get out of the kitchen now and then, and when we were asked to take a look at the dining choices both on and, in a few cases, off Block Island, it was a great excuse to explore some of the wealth of dining experiences now available. Whether you want a quiet weekday lunch with a friend, a dressed-up week-end dinner for 20, or an after-the-beach, take-home dinner for family, take a look at the menus gathered in this guide. They offer a delicious selection of meals in surroundings that go from casual to elegant. For folks who are visiting the island for the first time, we envy you. You have many gustatory delights ahead of you. For people who know this island well, there are still fresh treats ahead. There is a new burst of energy and ideas among the local restaurants each summer season. As Dan Puglia, head chef at the Atlantic Inn, says, “Winter is the reset button. It gives us the time to travel and seek out new ideas.”

Where can we go to find good seafood? The staff members at the Chamber of Commerce, who answer questions from visitors fresh off the boat, agree that one of the questions they hear the most is, “Where can we find good seafood?” Well, we are on an island in the middle of prime north-east fishing grounds, and here seafood comes prepared every way you can imagine. From simple to sophisticated, almost every one of our restaurants has one or more seafood selections, while some put the main focus on goodies from the sea. Foremost among them is the venerable Finn’s Seafood Restaurant, with a wide range of seafood items including tra-ditional shore dinners. Here you will find an ample selection from the raw bar and no-fuss seafood dishes that can be prepared broiled, baked, or fried. Both indoor and outdoor seating is avail-able, or order from the separate take-out window to get your meal packed up to go. Nearby at popular beach resort Ballard’s Inn, manager Steve Filippi says they serve “hundreds of lobster dinners a day – even thousands on the weekends” in their expansive dining area, which includes a large indoor section, a beachside patio and wait service

on the beach itself. You can sit on the porch of the National Hotel and order the lobster bake, freshly prepared swordfish or tuna, or enjoy the raw bar with your favorite drink. And it’s one of the best places to have lunch and watch the Fourth of July parade go by. At family-friendly Rebecca’s, which is primarily counter service or take-out, the favorites are the chowder, clam cakes, tuna sandwiches and lobster rolls, but there are many other non-seafood items as well. The Old Harbor View Takeout has very similar fare, and you can dine on their beautiful new patio. Down the street, the Harbor Grill in the Harborside Inn offers lobster and clam cakes for both lunch and dinner. The bucket of shrimp and the fish burritos are very popular up on the deck of The Oar, where you have a grandstand view of the action in the New Harbor. Dead Eye Dick’s, in its scenic location on the New Harbor, has daily specials which always include great seafood items. Sharkey’s and the Beachead are only a few steps from Crescent Beach on one side and Water Street on the other. Both have daily seafood spe-cials in a casual family atmosphere that’s also perfect for a relaxed night out with friends. Aldo’s Restaurant celebrates the family’s Italian heritage, offering all the classic Italian dishes in a menu spiked with Block Island favorites such as seafood pesto over pasta and soupa de pesche. The Narragansett Inn, housed in a classic landmark building overlooking the New Harbor, features twin lobsters on its dinner menu and the chef’s specials always present a fish served in some enticing new way. Ask about their fresh Italian Bindi sorbets as the perfect treat. Eli’s Restaurant has maintained its reputation for a style that is eclectic and seasonal in a cozy bistro setting. Chef Melissa Puglia oversees a stylish dinner menu that includes creative seafood selec-tions as well as other items that go beyond the traditional. C.J. Correnti, the chef at the Spring House, prepares a large baked, stuffed lobster that has been a popular choice on the Victorian hotel’s fine menu for years. The Hotel Manisses’ chef Ross Audino, always has fresh local seafood on the menu. The delectable choices include the now-famous lobster mashed potatoes. Dan Puglia returns for the second year as head chef for the Atlantic Inn in 2008. Dan serves “whatever is fresh” and seeks out local fishermen for shellfish, lobsters, steamers, and oysters.

What’s New? In our conversations with owner/managers of the local restau-rants, we find that structural renovations, staff changes, and menu updates are a part of the start-up process every year. Some of these changes are more evident to the average diner than others. For those of you who remember the Albion Pub from a few years ago, it is back again in 2008 in the same location and better than ever. You can dine inside in the newly renovated pub, out-side under the covered porch or on the sunny patio. The Albion features a variety of sandwiches, soups, and salads along with daily lunch and dinner specials. Over the winter, Finn’s Seafood Restaurant installed a new tavern upstairs over the restaurant. In addition to the spectacular view of the Old Harbor, all of Finn’s menu will be available along with stylish drinks in a welcoming pub-style atmosphere. Harry’s Café, which opened in 2007, is owned and managed

by Trip Pearce (former proprietor of the beloved 1980s Mexican restaurant Tiffany’s). Harry’s is located in the same building as the post office, perched slightly above Old Harbor to the south. Named after Trip’s father, the café is a casual eatery with counter service that offers proven favorites flavored by Trip’s own distinc-tive touch. In addition, there are plenty of tempting appetizers and yummy desserts. Trip says everything is “made from scratch” with fresh ingredients – and it’s BYOB. At Pizza Plus, barbequed pork ribs and chicken are hot off Glenn Pence’s smoker in addition to the tasty range of pizza choices to enjoy on the premises or to take home. Ballard’s Inn built a new piano bar in the center of its din-ing area in 2007. This year entertainer Ivory Joe, who comes to Block Island from Nashville, will be there every evening during the summer. Anthony McDonald serves luscious flaming coffees as well

Where can we go for “Fine Dining”? If you are in search of a more elegant, “white tablecloth sort of evening” with fine dining as your goal, there are a number of choices on Block Island. Starting on the east side of the island, the high-ceilinged rooms of the Spring House create an elegant, but relaxed dining room atmosphere and its perfect wrap-around porch is a lovely setting for a summertime lunch. The Gazebo Room of the Hotel Manisses puts a global accent on native New England ingredients. Sublimely creaky and cupola-ed, the Manisses offers a carefully selected menu of flavorful dishes. The Gatsby Room offers its own menu as well as items from the main dining room in a slightly more casual setting, and you don’t need a reservation. Every bit the classic country inn, the Atlantic Inn’s beautifully plated dinners range from succulent grilled meats to light, savory seafoods. Softly lit with candlelight and dressed up in crisp, white table-

cloths, Winfield’s cozy, unpretentious setting has earned a loyal following.

What about a friendly pub? If you’re in the mood for something a little more casual and affordable, you might want to consider some of Block Island’s friendly pubs, destinations in their own right. Some are tucked away, others have broad island views, but it’s for certain that you’ll find distinct warmth and conviviality in all of them. Located right in the center of Water Street, the main street, the Mohegan Café has not only pub food as well as choices from its restaurant menu, but also its own home-brewed beer. The tavern of the Beachead Restaurant looks out over Crescent Beach with its spectacular ocean views. Sharkey’s is folded into all the activity of the town with easy parking, too. Both the Harbor Grill and the National offer drinks and pub food on their expansive porches overlooking the Old Harbor where you can sit and watch the day – or night – go by. Almost at the top of Connecticut Avenue, Club Soda is in the first floor of the Old

Page 7: Block Island Dining 2008

www.blockislandtimes.com 5

High View Hotel. It’s open year round and one of the favorite spots for locals. Reputations have been won at Club Soda’s open mike nights on Fridays and karaoke on Tuesdays. The Oar sits up over the boating scene of the Block Island Boat Basin and offers the option of both indoor and outdoor service. Victoria’s Parlor in the Spring House is a full-service tavern with weekly martini soirees every Thursday evening. At the Atlantic Inn you can relax in an Adirondack chair on the lawn with a cold drink and enjoy the inventive selection of tapas. With its cozy intimacy and soft lighting, the Gatsby Room in the Hotel Manisses is a soothing getaway, or guests can lounge on the terrace and enjoy a romantic summer evening complete with lush gardens and a bubbling foun-tain before having dinner inside in the Gazebo Room.

And don’t forget Finn’s, the Albion and the Narragansett Inn mentioned above. All have classic New England hospitality in a casual atmosphere.

What are the best places for children? If you’re looking for “kid-friendly” options, try Aldo’s, Mohegan Cafe’s and Finn’s children’s menus. The National Hotel gives out tokens to its game room and Ballard’s Inn has a toy chest and a video arcade not to mention plenty of sand where the kids can blow off steam. Kids love to watch the airplanes land from the patio at Bethany’s Airport Diner, open for breakfast and lunch with a classic, old-school diner feel. Rebecca’s menu has all the favorites - grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken

Page 8: Block Island Dining 2008

fingers and hamburgers, and ice cream. Rebecca’s, the Water Street Café, Finn’s, the Old Harbor View Takeout and Three Sisters offer casual outdoor dining at shady picnic tables. Aldo’s Bakery makes its own ice cream – 32 flavors – and it has just added 12 new flavors of gelato. It will cater birthday parties for any age group. The island has its own Ben & Jerry’s right on Water Street with all of their popular flavors. Chapel Sweets offers the freshest of fudge and a wonderful selection of candies for children of all ages. And finally, everything about Froozie’s is a child’s treat, from its location next to the National Hotel’s game room to the homemade cookies. Parents who look for healthy and organic choices will be happy to find the wide selection of sandwiches and fruit smoothies, along with fresh-squeezed juice and Fair Trade certified coffee. Other options for families include: The Oar; Sharkey’s; The Beachead; The Narragansett Inn; Water Street Cafe; and the Old Harbor View Takeout.

Off the beaten track…. Payne’s Dock in New Harbor is a favorite gathering place for down home fare; chowder, clam cakes, sandwiches, ice cream and their famous donuts! It’s just a great place to sit in the sun and sample the “old” Block Island…friendly and unpretentious. For the first time this year, you can find food and refreshments at the very Northern tip of the island. H.J.Willy’s Dog Waggin’ offers beef hot dogs, bratwurst, cold drinks and snacks from a cart in the parking lot at the end of Corn Neck Road overlooking the North Light.

……. there’s even more? The Water Street Café overlooks the Old Harbor and has the out-of-doors atmosphere of a summer picnic - without all the work. You’ll find all the favorites: wraps; burgers; and chowder; and they will even prepare “lobster bakes to go” that can be picked up just before you jump on the ferry back to Pt. Judith. Just before you get to Crescent Beach look for McGovern’s

Yellow Kittens and their Mexican-on-the-Deck up under the awning. Kelly Robertson serves up her savory south-of-the-border menu along with lots of choices of drinks, from cold beers to Mudslides and Margaritas.

Who Serves Breakfast? A number of restaurants have breakfasts on the menu, from a quick bite to a full meal to linger over with the morning paper. You can find the earliest breakfast at Bethany’s Airport Diner, which opens daily year-round at 6 am. Look for the blackboard specials, especially the Crab Benny, an English muffin topped with a crab cake, poached eggs and a creamy Hollandaise. Beckett’s Authentic Gelato is new this year for takeout coffee and fresh baked breakfast goodies. Juice ‘n Java is the internet café with a new look. Pleasantly quirky, Juice ‘n Java has over a dozen Fair Trade certified organic coffees and bagels flown in fresh from New York City. Among a number of selections, ask about the Big Egg

Sandwich (and the Pot Roast Sandwich for lunch). Don’t forget the freshly made donuts at Payne’s Dock in New Harbor. Both the National Hotel and the Harbor Grill are open for breakfast this year, and you can dine outside and watch the town wake up over Old Harbor. Aldo’s Bakery has special coffees and a wide selection of fresh baked goods. Rebecca’s and the Old Harbor View Takeout serve a full breakfast menu. Froozie’s has grilled breakfast burritos with fresh ingredients. The 1661 Inn puts out a lavish champagne breakfast with a smashing view to boot. For absolutely the freshest bagels and muffins (made on the premises), you can dine inside or outside or take it with you when you stop by the Old Post Office Bagel Shop.

What About Take-out and Catering? When you are torn between spending time at the beach and serving meals for family and guests, our advice is to relax, linger by the water, and take advantage of all the take-home choices

Page 10: Block Island Dining 2008

available on the island. Almost everything on the menus at Aldo’s Restaurant, Ballard’s, Finn’s, Froozies, Harry’s, the National, The Oar, Rebecca’s, the Old Harbor View Takeout, Sharkey’s, and Three Sisters can be made to go. The deli at the Block Island Grocery will pack up a picnic with a wide assortment of sandwich-es (they also have paninis), cold beverages, fresh fruit, and desserts. And don’t forget the barbeque and pizzas from Pizza Plus; call ahead and pick it up on your way back from the beach. You can dine on the porch at the Albion or order take- out. If you have a special event coming up, remember that most of the restaurants will cater to private parties on-site or at the location of your choosing. For a truly romantic option, Hotel Manisses will cater a formal sunset dinner for two people on the beach. They will also accommodate larger groups for any special occasion at locations around the island or on their various proper-ties. The Atlantic Inn hosts private functions from a minimum of 15 up to a maximum of 250 people; the National Hotel has a separate dining room for private functions of up to 50 people. The Spring House can entertain private groups in different spaces on their porches, decks and lawns. Many of the restaurants plus Froozie’s and the Block Island Grocery will put together party platters upon request.

Is it possible to come over to Block Island just for dinner?

Yes! A fun idea that lets people in mainland Connecticut and Rhode Island get a quick taste of the island is the weekend sched-ule on the Block Island Express. With the addition of more trips, the schedule makes it possible for folks to come to the island in the afternoon with time to shop or swim, have dinner at an island restaurant, and return at 7:50 pm. This schedule runs Friday through Sunday from July 13 through the third week in August.

Any suggestions of where to stop while I’m “in America”?

Island dwellers on a trip to the mainland, and people passing through southern Rhode Island on their way to Block Island, may not be familiar with restaurants or places to stay in South County. There are plenty of places to stop by for a nice lunch or dinner out, or to pick up take-out to accompany you as you head for the boat or plane. If you take a side trip to Mystic or are passing by the exit on Route 95, be sure to try Sea Swirl of Mystic. It is a family owned

clam shack and ice cream shop. It’s pure New England at afford-able prices. If you’re flying to Block Island and you find yourself in Westerly, RI, the Cooked Goose has the comfort and warmth of a New England country store, but its food is stylish and new. If you drive south beyond the entrance to the Westerly Airport and turn left on Watch Hill Road, the Cooked Goose will be on the left across the street from Gray’s Marina and the Pawcatuck River. Co-owner Jennifer Gibson, with her husband Andrew Nathan, knows Block Island firsthand because she worked at the Hotel Manisses a few years ago. She and her staff prepare deli sandwiches, salads, soups, quiches and desserts which can be served tableside up to 3 pm and ordered from the counter until 7 pm every day of the week. You can pick up fresh fish in Westerly at The Fishery or in Narragansett right at the ferry dock at FerryWharf Fish Market. Both places provide excellent seafood that meets the demanding tastes of New Englanders who insist on only the best. You can get dinners to go on Friday and Saturday at The Fishery, and both places provide clam bakes to go. Another great option in the Westerly area is C.C. O’Brien’s, a sports café with a full and varied menu and 20 television sets to catch your favorite teams in action. If need to stay overnight, the Shelter Harbor Inn is a sure bet. Located east of Westerly on Rt. 1 about four miles from the intersection of Rt. 78, the Shelter Harbor Inn began as a comfort-able, unpretentious farmhouse in 1810. It now contains 26 rooms, its own dining room serving three meals a day, hot tubs, and paddle tennis courts, all set among lawns and gardens. Pets are now welcome in some of the rooms. If you stay there remember to ask about the special Block Island off-season rate for a room and breakfast. When you find yourself in Narragansett and Wakefield, on the way to or from the island, or just spending some time in the beautiful part of Rhode Island, there are two great options for din-ing: The Mariner Grill in Mariner Square or Charlie O’s on the point just past the Escape Road near the ferry. Both are worth a visit. Delicious food, the freshest ingredients, friendly service, and a relaxed atmosphere contribute to an enjoyable dining experience. It’s virtually impossible not to find something on these menus for every taste and appetite. Our best wishes for a very happy – and delicious – summer!
