Summary (2-3 Complete Sentences): What happened?

You Say You Want a Revolution…

The ScenarioThe year is 1917 and you are Vladimir Lenin. In the early 1900s you fled to Western Europe to avoid being arrested by the czar’s secret police. You have spent the last several years hiding outside of Russia from the czar, but now that the workers have risen up and the czar has stepped down, you decide the time is right for you to make your triumphant return! What are your goals and how will you build support for yourself and your movement? This mini-lesson will help you determine what your goals are and how you will accomplish them.

The Task – Unpacking Your SuitcaseAs you’ve been on the road for nearly twenty years, you’ve built up quite a collection of items in your suitcase. Now that you’ve come back home, it’s time to unpack. As you unpack, look at each item carefully and analyze how it contributes to a goal of yours for the Russian Revolution.

2. According to The Communist Manifesto, what role have the “have-nots” or workers always performed throughout world history?

3. How will the capitalist system destroy itself according to The Communist Manifesto?

4. Why will government one day no longer be needed according to The Communist Manifesto?

Book Description from www.amazon.comOriginally written in 1848, this groundbreaking and revolutionary pamphlet changed the world forever. In their manifesto, Marx and Engels claim that the human societies have always been divided into two warring classes – the “haves” or bosses and the “have-nots” or workers. While the wealthy owned the factories and material, the poor performed backbreaking labor under terrible conditions. According to Marx and Engels, capitalism and the Industrial Revolution further enriched the wealthy and impoverished the poor. In The Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels claim that the capitalist system will one day destroy itself. The working class will unite and rise up against the wealthy, seizing their factories and mills. Marx and Engels then claim that the workers will share their profits with each other and create equality for all people. Lastly, the authors believe that after a period of time, the government will eventually wither away as it will no longer be needed since all people will be equal and share their wealth with one another. This system where all land, factories, railroads, and businesses are owned by the people was called communism.

Item 2 – A Postcard from Germany to Fellow Bolshevik Leaders, 1917

1. According to the postcard, why have you gone to Berlin in 1917?

2. Why do you and your fellow Russian citizens want your country to withdrawal from World War I? (Look back at your Cornell notes if you need assistance.)

3. What do you mean, when you write that you and the Bolsheviks promised the Russian people “Peace, Land, and Bread?”

Dear Comrades,

I’ve been in Berlin for just over a week and I’m happy to report that this trip has been extremely successful. It seems that the Germans will happily accept our withdrawal from World War I and promise not to punish us if they do in fact defeat the remaining Allied Powers. Our country’s involvement in this terrible war has brought us nothing but shame, money, and death and it is time for our role to come to an end. We promised the Russian people “Peace, Land, and Bread” and now that the czar has been removed from power it is time for us to make good on our word.

Item 3 – Letters to Fellow Revolutionary Leaders around the World, 1917

4. What do you want to happen after the Russian Revolution successfully overthrows the wealthy and bosses in Russia?

Dear Fellow Leaders,

I hope that you have followed the great events taking place in our country these last few months and if so, I am sure that you too can feel the winds of change blowing. The capitalist system which has long abused and exploited us and our fellow workers is coming to an end in Russia and the time for the workers’ triumph is at hand. No longer will we work long hours in dreadful conditions just so that we can continue to fatten the pockets of the pig bosses and owners that have no concern for our health or livelihood. Soon all Russians will work for the common good and support each other personally and financially as brothers and sisters in arms.

Rather than this revolution stopping at Russia’s borders however, it is my dream that this movement will spread throughout the globe and inspire further rebellions against all capitalist bosses and rulers. For far too long the wealthy have divided us by forcing us to focus on our racial and national differences rather than our similarities as fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and most important…workers. Once our revolution is complete, I hope it will spread throughout Europe into France, Germany, Great Britain, and all other countries where the wealthy have long abused the poor. Workers of the world unite!

Sincerely,

Vladimir Lenin

1. Why are you so excited to write this letter to other world leaders?

2. What are some of the specific changes that you describe in the first paragraph you think will result from the Russian Revolution?

3. Why do you think the wealthy have long tried to divide workers from different nations and races?
