SUTRA GALLERY
Sutra Gallery offers a unique alternative space for visual arts in Malaysia and is associated with Sutra Dance The-atre (SDT). For over 28 years, SDT has spear-headed art exhibitions in tandem with its dance productions. With the formation of Sutra Gallery in 1996, a consistent flow of figurative works have emerged through the gallery’s commissions and residency programmes.
Through the efforts and visions of Ramli Ibrahim (SDT’s artistic director) and Sivarajah Natarajan (Sutra Gallery’s curator), the gallery has projected Dance especially the Indian classical dance styles of Odissi and Bharata Natyam and also the declining Malay pastimes of Makyong, Menora and Main ‘ Teri as potent subject matter in Malaysian visual arts. Sutra Gallery represents luminaries such as Syed Thajudeen Shaik Abu Talib, Sivarajah Natarajan, Eric Peris (Malaysia), Loo Foh Sang, A.V.Ilango (Chennai) and Dinanath Pathy (Bhubaneswar, Orissa).
