First Project of unit X I was in a group with 4 other people and we chose to do the Museum of a Circus filter, we made a company called the nine five circus who the council had commissioned to create a film that would show the similarities between the circus and everyday life for the purpose of entertaining the general public who are stuck in a boring nine to five routine, we should celebrate our cities and life itself! For example the film drew similarities between such things as the fire breather in a circus and a lady smoking or the shutters on the shop and the curtains being drawn.

We decided the best place to launch our campaign would be at the mif festival so we created four different poster designs that would convey the message of the event and inluded QR codes that would take you to the website that displayed our video but they also contained a website for the less technical audience.

The website became the Museum as it is an archive of memories/videos that can be constantly added to.The four posters displayed the idea of circus combined with everyday life still and during the Dragons Den feedback we were commended for our effort which was nice.

Although the footage I had filmed hadnt been included in our video we all took time to find snippets of old circus footage and help with the design of the posters and website as much as possible, I felt part of the team and I loved working with them all. We ranked joint second in the placings and the winners only got one more mark than us - it was a great feeling! Definately will not forget the experience in a hurry.

Wind in the Willows Brief was a brief I didn’t spend alot of time on as I had failed my book cover brief and I didn’t really feel up to creting more book covers in all honesty. I did not enter the competition online but I played around with the idea of symplistic designs. Sometimes in life simple is better and these may be too simple but The Wind in the Willows is such an iconic book that everybody knows what it is about it does not need an image of ratty, mole, badger and mr toad etc on the front as the chances are you have either read it or you are reading it because someone else has mentioned the story outline to you.

I had fun with the colour green as it is usually associated with the book and I took away all the imagery and just left moles glasses since he can never be seen without them and the chances are you have never not read this book.

The Topman brief I initially struggled with I decided to do the recipe one but it started to become difficult choosing one I wanted to do so I went to the Topman lecture and I have to say it blew me away, I loved it! I went back to my sketchbook and found it suprisingly easy to mock up new ideas. I chose forensic science as my filter and began looking at crime but I got too much involved and I started to create evidence bags and blood cell mock ups but I started to veer off and create things that no one needed to see.

I went back and decided to stick with my original plan of DNA after feedback from one of my tutors.

My lookbook, I created pages after page of poster designs but I couldnt decide on them and I started to like a few of them together so I decided to create a lookbook instead so it could showcase a few of the designs.

DNA is unique as everyones is different and so is fashion, you could line 5 boys up with the same top on but they would all wear different pant, shoes, jackets etc and all look completely different. Topman is unique so is fashion/DNA.

DNA is also made up of 4 elements and so is fashion to most people, Top, Pants, Shoes and accessories. I felt it was important to have this indicated in my lookbook designs.

I started to create circular shapes keeping in with the theme that everythings connected, DNA is neverending as is a circle as is fashion.

Anybody who looks at DNA looks at the spiral helix as it in its true form, I chose to look at it as its flatplan view, it is a new and exciting view and I enjoyed making them, I made clothes tags in S,M and L and used an acetate over piece, I felt it gave it something new and edgy, Topman always look for new and edgy designs.

I also created a giftcard based on something I had previously seen in the topman store. I didn’t do this Topman brief for the chance of winning a spot instore, I did it as a last chance of finding who I am as a designer and I feel I succeeded.

One of my peers suggested this would be a nice design of a poster to accompany my work in my portfolio so I added it in as an extra piece to add to my tags, giftcards and lookbook.

I really enjoyed this unit, it has been my favourite of the whole year, I feel I have come into my own as a designer on this project and I look forward to many more as a designer.
