Numeracy and Maths

NumeracyThis week we are going to be using the words ‘before, after and in between’ to describe numbers within 20 or within 100 as a challenge. Parents: write down numbers 0-20 on small pieces of paper and ask your child to order from smallest to largest or use this number line:

Ask your child to point to a number and then ask what number comes before and after that number. You can use the number line to help. If your child is confident with this, why don’t you listen to the big numbers song on youtube (link below) and pause the song every now and again. The number pause the song on, ask your child which number comes before and after. There is a link for a 100 square on the blog to support with this.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0dJWfQHF8Y

Using your number line can you complete the ‘Missing Numbers to 20’ or for a challenge the ‘Missing Numbers to 100’ link on the blog. These worksheets will focus on numbers in between. If you do not have access to a printer, please copy these into your jotter with a space to fill in the missing number.

WritingThe story of ‘The Gruffalo’ is set in the woods. The setting means where the story happens about. Can you write 2 sentences to describe what the woods look like? I have included a word bank for you below. You might want to use some of these words in your description:

tall green winding

dark

thick tree scary deep

Now can you pick a character from the story and write 2 sentences describing the character. Try to make your own word bank before you write your describe the character.

Listening and TalkingUse this link to listen to ‘The Gruffalo in Scots’. Listen out for these words: muckle, tod, hoolit, scran, neb, keek, stapped, feart (these words are in order as you listen to the story). Can you take a guess as to what these words mean?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2qmm9o77NU

I also love ‘The Glasgow Gruffalo’, here is a link to

Number TalksLook at the dot patterns below. Use your estimation skills to quickly estimate (guess) how many dots you can see. Then take a bit longer to look at the dot patterns and use your number talks strategy to check how close you were with your estimation.

MathsWhen you are in playing in your garden or on a walk, take a soft toy with you and hide it somewhere in your garden or on your walk. Try to direct your family member or friend to your soft toy by giving direction and using the language – left right, front, behind, above, below.

E.g. Take 4 big steps forward. Turn to your right. Take 10 little steps forward. Duck below the slide. Turn to your left. Look above the shed.
