Blood and Circulation

Science Starter 10-20-09Tell me everything you know about blood.Science Starter 10-21-09Why do I have a heart? What is it doing for me?

Exercise Your HeartActivityHeart/Pulse RateStanding for one minute85Laying for one minute71Running in place for one minute140Resting one minute90Resting three minutes78Science Starter 10-22-09Explain why my heart rate increases when I am exercising.

Big Ideas!I will understand the four main parts of my cardiovascular system and their functions.I will understand problems with my cardiovascular system, and how to prevent them.I will know the four parts of blood and their functions.Cardiovascular System Four Main PartsHeartThe job of my heart is to pump blood.

Four Main PartsArteriesMy arteries carry oxygen rich blood away from my heart

8Four Main PartsVeinsMy veins carry oxygen poor blood back to my heart.

Four Main PartsCapillariesMy capillaries are very small and allow for my cells to get oxygen from my blood, and give carbon dioxide back.

Science Starter 10-23-09Describe your arteries. Color Your HeartFollow along with Mr. Wager as he takes you through the flow of blood through the heart. You will color chambers, arteries and veins their appropriate color.Red = Oxygen RichBlue = Oxygen PoorYou will also label the different parts of your heart. This will be pasted into your journal.Bill Nye: HeartAs you watch the Bill Nye video, answer the questions on the video quiz. This is worth a quiz grade so take this seriously.

Science Starter 10-26-09Explain why my heart is an involuntary muscle.Echo Read: The HeartFollow along with the instructions from Mr. Wager as you echo read about the heart. When you are finished, we will answer questions on the back of the worksheet.

Partner Read: Blood VesselsTake turns reading out loud at your tables the reading on blood vessels. When you are finished, answer questions on the back of the worksheet.

Reflection Question10-26-09What are the four chambers of my heart?

Science Starter 10-27-09What are the three types of blood vessels?

Cardiovascular ProblemsHeart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. These include atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart attacks, and stroke.

Cardiovascular ProblemsBlood vessels become full of sticky fat deposits and they clog things up.When my blood vessel gets fully clogged, I will have a heart attack.

Cardiovascular ProblemsCardiovascular problems are be caused by:SMOKINGFATTY FOODSSTRESSPHYSICAL INACTIVITY LAZINESS

Cardiovascular ProblemsCardiovascular problems are stopped by:EATING HEALTHYEXERCISE BOTH AEROBIC & RESISTANCE

Body Story: Heart AttackWatch the video about John and his really bad day.

Reflection Question10-27-09How can I reduce my risk of having cardiovascular problems?

Science Starter 10-28-09Tell me a story about a time when your skin was cut. Describe what your blood looked like.Big Ideas!I will understand the four main parts of my cardiovascular system and their functions.I will understand problems with my cardiovascular system, and how to prevent them.I will know the four parts of blood and their functions. What is Blood?Watch and listen as Mr. Wager shows you what your blood is really made of.

Echo Read: BloodFollow along with the instructions from Mr. Wager as you echo read about the heart. When you are finished, we will answer questions on the back of the worksheet.

Science Starter 10-29-09What is the job of my red blood cells?

Table Read: BloodAt your tables, read the section on blood (pages 36-39) When you are finished, Mr. Wager will give you a packet to fill out as a team.

Science Starter 10-30-09What would happen if I didnt produce any red blood cells? Explain why.

Four Parts of BloodRed Blood Cells: My red blood cells and round disks that have a dent in the middle. Their job is to bring oxygen to all my body cells and exchange it for carbon dioxide.

Four Parts of BloodWhite Blood Cells: My white blood cells are around to kill pathogens and get them out of my body.

Four Parts of BloodPlasma: My plasma is the liquid part of my blood, whose job is to take food to my body cells, and carry waste away from them.

Four Parts of BloodPlatelets: My platelets are small, and their only job is to form a sticky web around cuts in my blood vessels to trap red blood cells and form scabs.

What do we see?

Reflection Question10-30-09Describe your job as a student?

Science Starter 11-02-09Starting in your right atrium, describe the path of a red blood cell through your body ending at the right atrium.

Relay Race to the BrainWe will compete against the other science classes in a relay race through our human body.We will pretend to be red blood cells and we need to get oxygen to our brain.Block 03 Turn in your journalsScience Starter 11-03-09Describe the similarities and differences between arteries and veins.

Blood 4-SquarePut your first name, last name, date and block number on your paper.Turn it over and draw two lines on your paper to divide it in half twice. In the first cell at the top, write the words red blood cells and then write: deliver oxygen to all my body cells. Then draw a picture to represent this.Blood 4-SquareIn the second cell, write the words white blood cells and then write: fights off germs and pathogens. Now draw a picture to represent thisIn the third cell, write the word platelets and write the words clot my blood when I get a cut.Now draw a picture to represent this

Blood 4-SquareIn the fourth cell, write the word plasma and then write: liquid part of my blood that delivers food to my body cells. Now draw a picture to represent this.

Add color to all picturesA select few will be laminated and hung.Reflection Question 11-03-09Explain why school is or is not important to you.
