The President’s Column

Happy, Healthy, United, and Sweet New Year

Shanah Tovah! I would like to start this newsletter with a quick step back to my September newsletter. I would like to make clear that the content of my September newsletter was stating my opinion only. It should not be considered the opinion of the board of Or Shalom or of the synagogue as a whole. It was never intended to be a political statement. It may not have been the appropriate venue for my thoughts, but I do feel strongly that we as a country need common ground in order to building a better future. I also believe that we, as the Jewish community of the United States, are in the best position to find common ground. This year especially, I would ask that you find it in your heart to forgive me if I have offended you at any point this year. I may not always have the best execution, but I do have the best intentions. Just like you, I care about my family, this community, and our country. May we all be written into the book of life for another year. Not only is the summer of COVID over, but also the year. 5780 will be in the rear view mirror as you are reading this newsletter. It has been a trying year for many people and for many reasons. The number one reason from many of us has been COVID. It has been a huge disrupter to school, work, and religion. Even with all the challenges presented to us this year I am very proud of the response and dedication of Or Shalom. Individuals and groups stepped up to fill the gaps and provide support in the void created by the pandemic. We checked in on the most vulnerable, we delivered challahs, and we created a professional quality video production environment for High Holy Day services. Larger synagogues with far more resources did not provide the loving services to the community to the level of our little shul. All of these extra services come at a cost. With the building empty we still have the same fixed costs month after month. We were very fortunate to be provided with donations to cover a lot of the unbudgeted expenses, your donations and support are needed if we are going to continue this level of community outreach and expand the offering as the opportunities arise. Please consider giving something extra as a donation to Or Shalom to not only help Or Shalom, but to help the local community as a whole. We are a small shul and every one of you can make a big difference with not only your gifts, but also your time. May you all have a happy and healthy new year and be written and sealed in the book of life for another year. In G-d we trust, Andy

Rabbi’s Reflections

The leaves have begun to turn and we are now officially into the Fall season. Our High Holidays, despite their uniqueness, were inspiring and holy! Despite our distance, we were able to come together and practice our rituals and traditions which have stood the test of time. For that, I am truly inspired and in awe! Thank you to everyone who contributed both by leading, organizing, supporting, and participating.

As we turn to our Fall holidays of Sukkot, Hoshanah Rabbah, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah my hope is that we continue to find unique ways to join together as one community, celebrating the joy and simchas (celebrations) of our tradition. The Fall is a particularly beautiful time. For me, the temporary shelter of the Sukkah gives a protective and cozy place to spend the last few weeks outside. Our Sukkot represent the values of hospitality and welcoming guests. This year, some may feel comfortable welcoming guests into their sukkah, for others, welcoming guests virtually or in alternative ways may feel more appropriate. No matter your comfort level I hope you will think about how to incorporate welcoming and hospitality into your life and Jewish practice.

As the leaves turn I hope we also can turn as a community to strengthening, uniting, and growing our community. We are in the midst of a contentious time in our country and therefore it is that much more important for us to come together as a community, despite our differences, to model for others how we support and respect one another for the sake of maintaining Jewish community and continuity. This is not easy; this takes mutual respect, listening, polite disagreement, and remaining rooted in a common purpose or value system; in our case practicing, providing for the community, and preserving Judaism and Jewish tradition.

We need your help, help from each and every member. We need your help in order to strengthen, unite, and grow our community. This is as simple as telling all your friends about Or Shalom or inviting them to come with you to Or Shalom events (yes, invite people to online events!). Or this could be at the level of volunteering your time to serve on a committee or the board. (Don’t worry it’s not that much time! Speak to a current board member to find out more information before committing.) Have an idea for a project or committee, propose it! Let’s get active! Perhaps others in the community have been waiting to join you on that endeavor or people in the larger community are looking for a synagogue that focuses on that area/ theme.

Furthermore, I think we all agree that we would love to grow our community; we want to see it flourish over the next decade and longer. In order to do that we, I, need your help, help creatively thinking about how to invite new people, welcome them, and maintain relationships with them, help to create and maintain a strong leadership presence to support a strategic plan to grow the community, help with marketing and to spread the word about our unique community, and also help to promote our small but mighty Hebrew school! If volunteering to do this work intimidates you, partner with a friend(s) to help. I’m so excited to do this work with you!

Wishing you have a peaceful and pleasant Fall. B’shalom (in peace),

Larisa Averbakh Education Director

Or Tamid

All the Jewish holidays this Tishrei fall on Sundays, and we weren’t able to have most of Or Tamid Sunday sessions thus far. Still, the school is as busy as ever! Our clergy, teachers, staff, and Education Committee members cherished the opportunity to greet our students in person at the book pick up drive through. Our families also donated around a 100 notebooks and sanitary items to the William Penn school district. I would like to thank amazing administrator, Annie Weiss, who spent countless hours to ensure that all books and goodie bags are staffed and ready to go! We had a wonderful opening session on Zoom, with the participation of Rabbi Jankovitz, Rabbi Knapp Schechter, Cantor Steve Friedrich, and special guests: the beekeeper, Ed Little, and his bees. It was a boisterous affair, with apples, honey, shofar blowing, and bees buzzing! We even got to see a queen bee! Both synagogues had remarkable tot, junior, and Hebrew High services for High Holidays, and weekday sessions at both synagogues are in full swing. As soon as the chagim of Tishrei are over, we have many exciting programs planned. On Saturday, October 17th, Morah Amy will lead a Zoom Junior Congregation for Or Tamid students in grades Gimel through Zayin (3-7). Each class will be responsible for leading several prayers. On Sunday, October 18th, our Sunday sessions will resume. On that day we will also start a special program for 3 to 5 years old, called Ready, Set, Alef-Bet! The program is free and available for all. If you know families with preschool age children, please send them our way, it will give them a head start for our religious school.

May you all be signed and sealed for a happy and healthy year, and enjoy the holidays!

Moadim l’simchah!

Benjamin Shender Chair of the Education Committee

I am writing this during the Days of Awe, preparing for Yom Kippur. But you will be reading this next month at the end of Tishrei, or even the beginning of Cheshvan. Hope everyone had an easy fast and is now ready to enjoy our gap before Hanukkah. We've also now finished our special lessons around the High Holidays and are ready to begin diving into Hebrew lessons, prayers, and more. When I think about the extent of Jewish history, theology, culture, and current events I am struck by how inadequate my own Jewish education was and how short a time a few hours a week for handful of years really is. For myself, I've taken to adding a lesson with Shabbat dinner each week. I ask my kid to pick a category, question, or topic of in-terest or curiosity. During the next week I look up the answers, an excellent opportunity to flesh out my own knowledge, and then share what I've learned. As my son gets older I'm hoping to change this to an opportunity to each how to do that kind of research and then let him take it over. That's how I'm trying to add just a little bit more. What are your ideas?
