    THE POWER OF NEW BLOOD

    2010 17

The 2010 global campaign forvoluntary donation focuses onYoungDonors, with the sloganNew blood

for the world. It hopes that a newgeneration of idealistic and motivated voluntary unpaid blood donors willform a pool that provides the safestblood possible for use wherever andwhenever it is needed to save life. Inevents and activities around the worldto promote Voluntary Blood Donation, youth will be the focus.

The camp we conducted atMarian Engineering College, Trivan-drum on 6-10-2010 was a uniqueexperience. When we entered the hallarranged for conducting camp the mostperceivable thing was the festivemood. The energetic volunteers wereeverywhere around. We kept wonder-

ing what these students still in their lateteenage think and know about blooddonation. Moreover we were slightlyapprehensive due to the nature of do-nors.98% were first time donors whoare known to experience more donorreactions than others. But when theystarted coming in for donation without

any persuation, waiting patiently fortheir turn, exactly obeying what theywere asked to do during and after do-nation we just realised while theoreti-cally its always elders who show the way to young ones ,at times eldersshould learn something from the young-er generation.Soon we also imbibedtheir spirit and our staff took all careto bleed comfortably the young donorswho were completely cooperative al-though many were afraid of the un-known. The flow of donors was

continuous,it seemed never ending.Weextended the scheduled time for finish-ing the camp as much as possible.Stillwhen it was time to pack up there werenumerous disheartened students whocould not donate to whom we prom-ised to come back again soon.We col-lected 83 units and the total collectionfrom the camp was 343.Mean age ofthe donors was 18.And we had very fewdonor reactions in spite of thecrowd.Back in the blood bank, the

concept of voluntary blood donor as thesafest donor was once again proven asall the blood units were found safe.

The altruistic spirit and enthusiasmshown by these students of Marian

Engineering college reflects the attitudeof whole generation. They are potentialregular voluntary donors as well asefficient recruiters which should bemade use of to the best. Regular blooddonation also helps to promote safe andhealthy life styles among the youthinturn. The future of every nation

depends on the capacity of its youth totake over from the older generations, the responsibility to sustain, strengthenand improve interventions for a betterand healthier life for its population.Letus hope that our youngsters will alwayshold high the torch of Voluntary BloodDonaion burning bright.

In a society that is largely unaware of the concept of

voluntary blood donation, to motivate one person todonate blood is in itself quite a big deal, let alone morethan two dozen people. But thats exactly what 17-year-old Keerthana Mannayam did and that too with lan.The sprightly teenager, a Plus One student of Cotton HillHigher Secondary School in the city, spearheaded anawareness campaign and a voluntary blood donationdrive in her school, where she got 40 of her teachers andparents of her school mates to sign up to donate blood. For her efforts Keerthana emerged as the winner of theBuddy for life voluntary blood donation contestorganised for school students by Terumo Penpol as partof its observation of National Blood Donation Day.

    Campaign act

Keerthanas campaign was held the following day on October 2, where 28 peopledonated blood; the others had to opt out due to health reasons. Being a NationalService Scheme volunteer, Ive always been interested in social service. Conductingvoluntary blood donation campaigns is one of the easier ways to do social service, and a vital one at that. For the past three years or so, I have been actively tryingto promote the concept of voluntary blood donation. I didnt expect an award,Im just doing what I think should be done for the good of society, says Keerthana. The irony is that Keerthana herself cant donate blood because she is underweight the minimum weight for a blood donor being 45 kg! Perhaps thats why theyoungster did a lot of groundwork to get this particular drive up and running.

With the help of her teacher Sajeena and her fellow NSS volunteers, she organised

an awareness session to sensitiseteachers on the need for blood donation.Keerthana made sure to invite blooddonor motivators to the event to sharetheir experiences with the teachers so

that the latter could overcome theirmisgivings on blood donation. She laterdistributed IEC (information, communication and education) materialrelated to voluntary blood donation tothe teachers and promoted the blooddrive through posters, pamphlets andregular announcements. Of course, allof this had its challenges, she admits. The key to voluntary blood donationdrives lie in awareness campaigns. Ihave found that there are quite a number

of people who are ready and willing todonate blood. Its just that most of them not even older people are aware ofthe process of voluntary blood donationnor of the dire need for it. This is anissue that needs to be addressed and issomething that I hope to change, saysKeerthana, who lets us know that she islooking forward to conducting moresuch drives in the near future.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR-APATHY TOWARDS BLOOD DONORS

    Dear editor,

With utter shock and disgruntlement, I wish to draw attention of one all in the chain of governmentof Kerala about the sad state of disconcert towards BLOOD DONORS, in the government hospital, includingMEDICAL COLLEGE, TVM. Individual who do volunteer to donate blood need no extra persuasion eithermonetary or otherwise. On the other hand it becomes the bounden duty of the receiving organization toaccept this as a great service to humanity and at least show the gratitude by way of giving a significantrefreshment.

It was awful to see at Medical College that after blood donation the donors were served only acup of tea and only three biscuits by count. This by any standards of hospitality is shameful quantity.Even a guest coming over ones house is not ill treated in this demeaning manner. The guest in any casecan not be equated with the donor who has given his blood both literally and figuratively to save someones life. On questioning the authorities they raised their hands and expressed their inability to do anything favourable. They In fact were concerned about the hapless situation towards the donors but werebold enough to admit that their hands were tied, lip sealed and eyes covered.

May I, on behalf of all noble blood donors, demand an explanation and immediate remedial actionfrom the medical authorities of the state as to why the donors could not be provided with substantialrefreshment by which they are at least given a consolation for the good service they are doing tohumanity?

Wg Cdr D Sendhil Kumar is presently posted to 1 Kerala AirSqn NCC as the Commanding Officer. He started his flight intodonating blood since he was a NCC cadet himself way back in 1989.Till now he had donated 30 times. According to him he gets completepleasure and satisfaction every time he donates blood. He shareshis experience

Donating blood may be regarded as one of the noblest service to mankind.Indeed it is one step higher than those who pledge their organs for donation afterones death. Blood donor on the other hand is donating something when he is liveand kicking. Scientific advancements have still not reached that stage as yet whereinsubstitute for blood has been found. Man can confidently say there is water onmoon as well but alternative for blood here on earth is still a distant dream. Mancannot recreate all the wonders of the supreme power. Thus blood donors areplaced at the epitome as one who directly saves life.

Life has become so hectic and mechanical that one is not aware aboutwhen will it take an about turn or come to a stand still. With these development, existence as an entity, hangs precariously on thin line of life or death. Unnaturaldeath tolls are on the rise so are accidents and incidents. These situations relatesto survivability with every ounce of that life saving fluid called blood. Loss ofblood thus amounts to direct loss of life. Surgical operations too, either preventiveor remedial, to extend life, yet again demands availability of blood.

And for all these, there are donors who donate blood when someone

requests, or there are enthusiast who routinely donate and then there are few diehard fanatics who keep a check on their three months compulsory abstinence andthen rush for donation. All of them finally belong to the category of the ones whoare willing to save life of the needy.

Donors get ecstatic pleasure in donating blood. There are no compulsionsyet the pleasure they derive of it is immense and beyond compare. They dontequate themselves as the life provider but a life defender. Donors feel happy thatthey have defeated death one more time.

Till donors like these are available the blood which has no differentiationof cast creed, sex, region, religion, social status etc, every fight between life anddeath will be won by the existing human beings each and every time. Every one of

us must join hands together to win this battle by just parting of with that pint offluid which will save someone to open his eyes to see another day of this beautifulearth.

Ultimately, those who would have donated may not have replicated asgod but certainly would have advanced one step closer.

Letter to the Editor- The need forVoluntary Blood Donation

    Dear Baby P S,

I am Hrishikesh, 32 working with the Internal Audit Wingof Santhigiri Ashram, Pothencode, Thiruvanathapuram.I found your mail id in The Voluntary Blood Donation

Journal while I was searching for articles on blood donationin Kerala today. I read some of your issues and that really illuminated my mind.I donated my blood for the FIRST time in 32 years yesterday. My aunt had to

undergo an operation at Muthoot Medical Centre, Kozhencherry and she requiredblood. I duly went and donated. What surprised me was that a certificate ofappreciation was given to me by the hospital and that too for donating blood formy own aunt. The whole thing made me recollect some old memories. Three years ago I was inChennai attending coaching classes for CA-Final at Prime Academy. One of ourhighly esteemed teachers, Sri M P Vijaykumar (presently CFO, Sify) was takingclass on Accounting for Non Profit Organizations. During the discussion he remindedus of an incident in his life. His wife was admitted for a critical surgery at ahospital in Chennai. She was in need of blood. Mr. Vijaykumar until then had

never donated blood in his life. Here I am quoting his own words. I shamelesslyasked my friends for blood. God was kind enough to send some people whom Iam meeting for the first time in life to donate their blood for my wife. He thenwent on to talk about the importance of donating blood , he himself being anactive blood donor since the incident. We were all motivated .I dont know howmany of his students were true to his words and became voluntary blood donors. But I failed him.During this time I have seen requests for blood donation ,articles about blood

donation camps .Nothing woke me up. Honestly speaking I have seen article onTerumo Penpol campaigns in The Hindu too.Today I searched the net for articles on blood donation and I again chanced uponyour e-journal. I found the articles very knowledgeable and decided its my turn. Iwish to know how I can be a part of your noble and humanitarian mission. Iwould be much thankful if you could send details to my mail id. Im also quotingmy contact number.I thank you for your precious time .Peace,Hrishikesh9037460824, 9496388480

Debraj Mookerjee is an academician in Delhi Universityand regularly writes in Indian Express Newspaper.

Among journalists there is a dirty little word called plug. When you write something to push the agenda of an interestedparty, you are said to be plugging for that party. A lot of lobbying through the media is done through this route. Today Illplug for the cause of blood donation. No, I have not been put up to the task; it is just that I feel strongly about the issue. When

my father was terminally ill in hospital, my students lined up to donate about 35 units of blood for him. Ever since he passedon in 2002, Ive regularly donated blood for anonymous recipients. A recent ad I saw, released by NACO on behalf of theNational Blood Transfusion Centre (NBTC), and supported by the BBC, would not list among the best of creative efforts, butwhat it seeks to achieve is laudable. The ad in question operates at different levels. It clearly sets out to build a narrative around the business of blood donation, emphasizing two things: a) that blood donation is a commemorative act that hasspecial significance for both the recipient and the donor, and b) it is important enough to take precedence over whatever itis that might be more pressing at the time.A young man is appearing for an interview and turns up late. The one thing you do not do when asking someone for a jobis appear late, which is exactly what this young man does. When informed that it is the young mans birthday, the interviewer asks him whether the occasion justifies the late arrival, and ironically suggests that maybe a cake is in order. At this point the interviewee mentions something about having an

important business to attend to, which has caused the delay. Viewers at this point are understandably bewildered by theyoung mans attitude, since to them his behavior is completely counterintuitive. There is an open honestly and genuinewarmth in his face, but he seems to be behaving like someone who is keen on being rejected for a job that could be his. Whenthe interviewer asks him, with a shrug of the shoulder, what could be more important than his job interview, the intervieweetells the panel he donates blood every birthday. At his point the lady interviewer is seen to respond immediately to hispresence and begins conducting the interview in earnest.A job interview is a red letter day in anybodys life, and to choose to donate blood on such a day indicates that; a) donatingblood does not impair functioning in any way, b) because it is life saving, it takes precedence over all other engagements, and c) it is nice to associate blood donation with an important occasion in this case the donors birthday. So many mythsabound vis-a-vis blood donation that NACO and BBC make a conservative pitch while advocating the theme. The adsuggests (subliminally at least) that you ought to donate blood once a year (birthday!). In truth, you can donate blood asfrequently as every 90 days. The voice-over emphasizes the fact that you can either save a life or ... just by your decision toeither donate or not donate blood, which weighs heavy on the viewers conscience. Dont think; donate and see it feelsgood is the final message. It does feel very good

in TERUMO PENPOL in August andSeptember 2010 .He devised a socialmarketing plan for voluntary blooddonation campaign with a specificname, vision, mission and objective. Heidentified the possible barriers andmotivators for voluntary blood dona-tion, and the reasons for not donatingblood. In addition, he targeted threespecific groups for the campaign whichinclude: young donors like club 25, rel-atives and friends of blood recipientsand middle and higher social class of

people working in different companiesand offices. There are different strate-gies for each of the targeted groups .Heidentified strategies to achieve the goalof fulfilling the blood need of the city

from 100% voluntary blood donation. We need motivated people to imple-ment this social marketing campaignto carry forward this cause and save thelives of thousands through 100% vol-untary blood donations.Blood has been classified as drug, andit is very essential when treating cancer, thalassemia and Hemophillia patients, patients like women hemorrhaging dueto pregnancy complication, childrenwith severe anemia, accident victims, and surgical patients. Yet, it is veryimportant that the overall qualityimplementation and management in theblood Centers is insured and that theblood is free from any transfusion-transmissible infections including HIV.

However, comprehensive laboratorytests are neither possible nor pragmaticto insure the safety and quality of blood.Consequently, there should be systematicways of collecting blood from genuine

voluntary non-remunerated donorsrecruited through education basedmotivation.More than half the population of Indiais medically fit to donate blood. Butonly 4 out of 1000 of the population inthe country are blood donors. Likewise, the city of Trivandrum does not havesufficient blood from voluntary blooddonors to treat its patients. Thats whythere is the need to set-up a communityblood center to cover the supply of

blood in the city. But, before any attemptto set-up the center is made, it is ofparamount importance to insure thatthere are enough voluntary blooddonors.
