Blood Pressure Heart Rate

What is it? The force the heart exerts against the walls of arteries as it pumps the blood out to the body

The number of times your heart beats per minute

What is the unit of measurement? mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) BPMs (beats per minute)

What do the numbers represent? Includes two measurements:Systolic pressure(top number): The pressure as the heart beats and forces blood into the arteriesDiastolic pressure(bottom number): The pressure as the heart relaxes between beats

Includes a single number representing the number of heartbeats per minute

Sample reading 120/80 mm Hg 60 BPM Resting

Where do you get the Heart Rate

You want to check and Adult or child over 8 years old on the carotid artery

Under 8 years of age check the brachial artery

Resting Heart Rate vs.

Maximum Heart Rate

• Resting Heart Rate – The normal resting adult human heart rate ranges from 60–100 bpm. Bradycardia is a slow heart rate, defined as below 60 bpm. Tachycardia is a fast heart rate, defined as above 100 bpm at rest.

• Maximum Heart Rate – For moderate-intensity physical activity, a person's target heart rate should be 50 to 70% of his or her maximum heart rate. This maximum rate is based on the person's age.

Blood Pressure

• What are the two readings and what do they mean?

• Top number = Systolic• Bottom number = Diastolic

Ideal numbers are 120/80

Systolic Reading

• The pressure of blood going through the heart as it beats.

Diastolic ReadingThe pressure of blood that builds up behind the heart as it relaxes between the beat
