Blue Devils excel at teenbiotech challenge
Davis High School students once again shined at the annual Teen BiotechChallenge Awards, with 18 DHS students taking home awards and four ofthem earning summer internships for finishing in the top 10.
Mariam Bader, Rana Eser, Manraj Gill and Anna Gong will all beinterning at the UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures, where theywill work alongside scientists in UCD stem cell laboratories this summer.
The internships come courtesy of a $264,000 grant awarded to the UCDHealth System by California’s stem cell agency earlier this year.
The grant, from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, willsupport summer internships for high school students over the next threeyears. The internships will be available at the UCD Institute forRegenerative Cures and other university laboratories in both Davis andSacramento. The goal is to increase the number of young people enteringthe field of stem cell research.
“The students who will intern at UC Davis represent a very bright futurefor advancing science and achieving breakthrough discoveries,” said JanNolta, director of UCD’s stem cell research program.
Ten students each year will be recruited for the internships through theTeen Biotech Challenge, a competition for Northern California teensinterested in the biotechnology field.
Working alone or in teams, students participating in the challenge createwebsites centered on one of seven categories of biotechnology.

year was no exception, with DHS students taking first place in three ofthe seven categories, as well as three second places, two third places andtwo honorable mentions.
All were honored during a ceremony at UCD on Friday.
Manraj Gill and Anna Gong took first place in agricultural biotechnologyfor their project, “Genetically Modified Crops: Drought Resistant and(Water Use Efficiency).”
In the area of drug discovery and biomanufacturing, Don-Wook Shin andTed Xiao took second place for “Cell Surface Markers” and the team ofFatuma-Ayaan Rinderknecht and Mikaela Zufelt earned a third place for“Transgenic Animals: Models for Disease.”
Davis High took the top two spots in the field of genetic testing andforensics, with Mariam Bader earning first place for “Genetic Mutationsand Gene Therapy,” and the team of Madeleine Davis, Moniqueka Leeand Pratistha Bajracharya taking second for “Solving Crimes with DNA.”
In the area of genomics and synthetic biology, Rana Eser took first placefor “Decoding Life’s Manual,” while Julia Hills and Alex Little tooksecond for “Designer Babies.”
The team of Thasos Athanasiou Athens and Pavle Jeremic earned anhonorable mention for “Biotelemetry and Remote Drug Delivery” in thenanobiotechnology division.
And in the area of regenerative medicine, Farsheed Fani earned thirdplace for “Regenerative Medicine: Stem Cell Therapy” while the team ofInes Guinard and Aristos Athens earned an honorable mention for“Articular Cartilage’s Struggle with Regeneration.”
Nearly 500 students from Northern California entered this year’schallenge.
