MEC Bikefest Ottawa 2013 – June 16 It's that time of year again - time to come out and celebrate bikes at the 5th annual Bikefest taking place Sunday June 16th at LeBreton Flats. The purpose of Bikefest is to bring together the Ottawa - Gatineau bicycle community to showcase and engage in all things bicycles, the cycling culture, bike-related opportunities and initiatives. Come enjoy the fun by joining the Group Rides which explore bike friendly pathways, infrastructure and heritage highlights; visit the marketplace & booth exhibitions hosted by various bike outfits, advocacy groups and organizations; and enjoy family-friendly activities & workshop clinics for all ages and skill levels. Outdoor screening of Lost Rivers at Fort York - June 26th… Newsletter Spotlight Blue Jays Game As the summer is approaching, the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer. It’s time to break out the flip flops and dust off the sun hat; it’s BASEBALL SEASON! The OALA will be hosting a “Night at the Ball Park” this June 19, 2013 at the Rogers Centre, as the Blue Jays battle the Colorado Rockies. First pitch is 7:07pm. Tickets are $12.00 apiece. Seats are in section 526, rows 12, 13 and 14. We will be meeting across the street and hanging out on the grassy lawn outside of the Steam Whistle Brewery before the game between 5:30 – 6:30pm but if you want to grab a free beer before the game make sure to arrive before 6pm as the brewery closes then. Tickets can be purchased via PayPal through the OALA website. Purchased tickets will be e-mailed to you to print out and bring. We would like to limit one non-OALA member per OALA member. We may open this up closer to the date, if there are more tickets to sell. So grab some co-workers, friends, family, or any other excited summer-enthusiasts and come on down for a “Night at the Ball Park”! Click here to register. The awards will be presented in five categories: Urban Infill, Public Places and Civic Spaces, Urban Elements, Visions & Master Plans and Student Projects. Projects built between September 1, 2011 and September 1, 2013 will be eligible. Submissions must be received by 4 p.m. on August 15, 2013. Program guidelines and submission entry forms are available on the City’s website at: www.ottawa.ca/ urbandesignawards Awards will be presented on the evening of October 16, 2013. Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) Launches The Great Community Resiliency Project Contest WHAT: Green Roofs for Healthy Cities’ The Great Community Resiliency Project Contest. Submit your ideas of how living architecture can create more resilient communities in face of climate change, resource shortages, natural disasters and environmental degradation. HOW: Submit your ideas to The Great Community Resiliency Project Contest in one of the acceptable formats to the editor, Jennifer Foden Wilson, [email protected] by Wednesday August 28, 2013. WHERE: The editor’s top picks will be published in the November (Winter 2013/2014) issue of the Living Architecture Monitor magazine. WHY: In 2012, the United States experienced 11 extreme weather related disasters, each causing in excess of $1 billion in damages and many more on a smaller scale. Recently, Hurricane Sandy pummeled the U.S. so hard that the economic impact will likely top $60 billion. Natural disasters have an enormous impact on our infrastructure, ecosystems and on the health and livelihood of those affected. We are far from fully understanding the hidden potential of how living architecture systems can help our communities cope when various disasters strike. There were panels on design trends, utilities, developers, policy making best practices and more. Join Green Roofs for Healthy Cities and other living green infrastructure advocates in signing the online declaration: Let’s plan and build greener, healthier, more beautiful communities. Together we will deliver a unified message of our collective support of living green infrastructure to policy makers, planners and developers in markets across North America. Step Forward: Hamilton Pedestrian Mobility Plan Award Category: “Innovation for Sustaining Places” The category recognizes truly innovative sustainability practices that are being used in how places are planned, designed, built, used, and maintained at all scales. Examples include innovative plans, programs, tools, and related actions that demonstrate advancement in planners' efforts to address the serious consequences of development and everyday living on the local, regional and global environment. This Award reflects the innovative and sustainable practices contained in the report. OALA encourages all members/member firms receiving awards for Landscape Architecture works, to advise the Association so we may post a notice in an upcoming newsletter. GARTEN +LANDSCHAFT MAGAZ'INES from 1987 TO 1995 (3 boxes only #6 -1990 and #7-8 of 1995 missing) The magazines are available just for the pick-up.
