4th Annual Mississippi ValleyBlues Festivalby Marcie Ryan

In Davenport, Iowa, where the Mississippi River runs east andwest, the Mississippi Valley Blues Society hosts a three-day bluesfestivalevery July. This year's festivalwas held July 1,2 and 3 takingadvantage of the long 4th of JuIyholidayweekend. Festival goers hadthree full days of electric and acoustic blues performed on twoseparate stages in Le Claire Park on the Mississippi River.Saturday, July 1,was hot and steamy but the heat didn't keep thecrowd of over 10,000 from enjoying fine performances byWilliamClarke, Jimmy Johnson, Otis Clay, among others, on the main stageand Spencer Bohren, Johnny Shines, Barbeque Bob & WashboardChaz,Jim Schwall,Son Thomas and Johnnie Johnson inthe acoustictent. The MississippiValley Blues Festival is noted for itsfine acousticlineup and this year was no exception.Sunday, July 2, featured an eclectic mix of blues stylesfrom TheBlue Band, Tail Gators, AC Reed and CJ Chenier & The Red HotLouisiana Band on the main stage. Beausoleil performed on the mainstage and in the acoustic tent and clearly were the favorite of mostfestival goers. This cajun band is not one you willsee at every fest.Armstrong & Bogan & Armstrong, "the last of the black stringbands," also captured the crowd in the acoustic tent with two fineperformances. Smokey Smothers & Barrelhouse Chuck gave the

acoustic tent yet another blues flavor to make Sunday the best day ofthe fest for me.Monday, July 4, included another 10 hours of fine blues perfor-mances on both stages. On the main stage Liz Mandville & theSupematurals heated things up at 2:30 and were followed by CoolPapa, Mel Brown & the Silent Partners, Tinsley Ellis and Joe LouisWalker doing the finalewhich included fireworks. The acoustic tent started the day off with a three-hour jam featur-ingseveral fine localmusicians, including Jim Schwallwho has madeDavenport his home for several years. Carey and Lurie Bell alongwith Lovie Lee provided the finale in the acoustic tent.As in years past, the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival providedmany hours of great blues music presented by the MississippiValleyBlues Society, an organization much like our own Kansas CityBluesSociety. A note of thanks is in order to all those folks in Davenportwho volunteer so much time to present such a fine festival! D

KG Blues Profile: Ida McBeth ... continued from page 1Too Much Weekend, Part /IThe Chicago (Fest) Interviews

by Shirley OwensChicago Blues Fest was "Too Much Weekend" and thefollowing story

ispart II of the world's best blues fest. .. Chicago!Saturday evening (6/10/89), I found James Cotton backstage

ready to jam at the main bandshell. While talking to his fans, he toldme, "I playvery seldom in Chicago due to the fact of I'm out on theroad 35 to 40weeks of the year". His favorite place isalwayssweethome Chicago!Professor Eddie Lusk popped in and says hi to everyone in KC.Excitedly,he reports his brand new release isout. It iscalled "Profes-sor Strut" withKaren Carrol (daughter ofGene Carrol) onDelmark.Professor says, "It's Delmark's first blues record in 10years and I'mthe first artists to sign up. I hope to be in KC in September".After the Fest, the night spots were hopping. I caught Otis Rushat Blues Etc. where I found record producers, Bruce Iglauer, BobPorter, and Dick Sherman, all checking Rush out too. Between sets,Otis Rush declared, "I'm just trying to learn to play. I listen to allguitar players, no one special. For forty years, I've hung out right here(Chicago)". His current favorite song is "Oh Baby, Don't Go, ComeBack To Me", laughed Rush.Into the wee hours, I checked out Buddy Guy's opening night ofhis new club called Legends. Buddy was joined by many of hislongtime friends on stage - Lefty Diz, Lazy Lester, A.C. Reed,Jumpin' Johnny, Kenny Neal...and more.Up and ready for the next day's onslaught of blues, I hiked overto Navypier to find the Virginian bluesman John Jackson hosting aguitar workshop and talking about his life. Hans Theesink was alsojamming at Navy Pier. Hans gave me his last release on FlyingFish,"Baby Wants to Boogie". "It ismy first record out in the States. I'vejust recorded a new record in Europe called 'Johnny and the Devil'.I plan to go back to Europe in twoweeks but first I'm off to do a liveradio show with Studs Terkel", Hans informed as he was whiskedaway.Next on my list of interviews - David "Honeyboy" Edwards.Honeyboy's latest release on the Blues Suit label, "White Windows",ishisfirst release in5 years. "I plan on going to the Little Rock BluesFest in July, Italy on July 27, then to London, England. I travel bymyselfbut I'm fixingto get a trio together. The first time I came toChicago was on a freight train with Little Walter. We hoboed fromSt.Louis and wound up on MaxwellStreet. He (Little Walter) couldplaytoo. He started withme when hewas 18years old.He had a soundnobody got down. Ifyou play the blues - let it cook - let it soundgood - take that chord and shake it around", advised Honeyboy.A.C. Reed, still in the wrong business, had his pink sax in handwhile he and his manager, Stan Jones, talked about a possible LoneStar date in KC in July. AC. says, "I'm working on a new album, around the first of the year. Everybody says I protest with musicthrough my lyrics and they could be right. That's one way I get

through to the peoples. People don't give blues what theydeserve" ...we know that's right, AC.Lee "Shot" Williams last performed in KC at Blues Alley about3years ago. "I've got a record out about a year old on Chelsea Ave.Music out of Memphis, where I'm mixing a new release to be called'Somebody Done Took My Woman and Gone'. It will be out soon.I'llbe at the Delta Blues Fest inGreenville, Mississippi on September17",reports Lee "Shot". 0Next month in "KC Crossroads" ...
