July - September 2015
From Your President…
Wow! What a couple of months! Losing friends and legends in a heartbeat. BB King gave his whole life to the blues, and will be forever loved. Closer to home, BSCP lost two very close friends and supporters of the blues in Dale Roat and Rick Heffelfinger. Dale was a fixture at all BSCP events and, of course, the Thursday night jams. Blues folk were out in force for Dale’s service and the outpouring of love and respect for Dale was a great source of comfort for Dale’s family. Rick’s service will be soon and there will be a special jam at River City Blues Club. So many nice things have been posted about Rick, but I thought this by our brother Mitch Ivanoff was particularly good: “Looking back, Rick was one of those rare individuals whose dream was to make others happy by bringing them together. His heart was full of love which he did his best to give freely. The Blue Front could be compared to Camelot and for a brief shining time we all basked in its warm welcoming love. Rick’s Lost, Found and Dearly Departed offered everything you could ask for. His oldest and dearest friends worked very hard to make this happen alongside of him. We all will miss him I’m sure as he left us with all that he had.” Dale and Rick will be sorely missed. While all this was going down, we had our BSCP Treasurers Picnic and the Dauphin County Music & Wine Festival. Both events were very successful and I think everyone enjoyed. And, next month we have our Mississippi Railroad Picnic at the Shellsville VFW picnic grounds. This year’s artist will be Terry “Harmonica” Bean. This is a free to member’s event and is a good chance for you musicians to play with a Mississippi bluesman. Bring your own food and drink and come on out. Till next time,
Buster

DALE ROAT REMEMBRANCES
Dale Roat Obituary
Dale S. Roat 63, of Harrisburg, died Monday, June 1, 2015 at Hershey Medical Center. Mr. Roat was born in Harrisburg and was the son of Harry A. Roat, Jr., of Harrisburg, and the late Thirza Snyder Roat. He was employed at Forte Music, where he was a Drum & Percussion Teacher, for 37 years. He was a member of the Blues Society of Central Pa. and the Friends of Jazz. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan, gardener and volunteer for the Blues Society of Central Pa. and the Friends of Jazz. He was presently serving on the Board for the Blues Society of Central PA.
I will always remember Dale Roat as an all-around great guy and a friend that always greeted me with a sincere smile and a firm handshake. Usually in the background, Dale was a tireless worker at all BSCP events. He was dedicated in arriving early every Thursday to get started on setting the stage for our jam and at our picnics and often jumped right into the kitchen to aid a hand in anything needed at our BSCP picnics and Christmas parties. Dale will also be remembered for the delicious and unique foods that he grew in his garden and prepared to share with his friends. I know that Dale was loved and admired by everyone whose life he touched. We will remember him fondly and miss him forever. - Greg Hogg
The loss of Dale Roat for me was very hard. Dale and I have been friends for many years. We would meet up at the jam on Thursday nights and pick on each other while setting up for the jam. We were both Phillies Fans. We would meet up at the drum show up in Selinsgrove every year and borrow money from each other, if one of us would run out. We were like two kids in a toy store. We would call each other when one of us purchased something new. I was so happy for him when he met Karen. They both loved each other and the blues. I just got home from the music fest at Fort Hunter Park. It was tough being there without him. The Blues Society will never be the same for me. - George Carver
I have probably played with Dale more than any other drummer at the jam. He taught me about locking in as a rhythm section. I always enjoyed his smile, his warmth, and overall acceptance even
PROOF
Page 3when I wasn’t very good at the beginning. I miss his “Hello General” every time I walk into Champions early to help with setup. - Bob Hodgson
Two qualities come to mind when I think of Dale - he always seemed happy and calm. He was at ease in himself and with the world and just plain happy and content. I will miss his twinkle and his easy way. - Hannah Sherman
Dale was a good friend and one of the best members of the Jam Committee. He was always willing to pitch in and help out in any way. He came early to the jam to set up, along with George Carver. He usually would play the first set with me and the other early birds and I miss him every week since he has not been there. Dale also served on the Board of BSCP and was involved in every event we held over the years. I imagine him jamming now with Kensey Johnson, Rob Porter and other Dearly Departed, with Rick H smiling in the House. Rest in peace, my friend and jam on - you are sorely missed. – Rocky Rothrock

RICK HEFELFINGER REMEMBRANCES
Lost a good friend today, Rick Hefelfinger. He was more than a friend, he was a true lover and supporter of music. A warrior for the cause, tireless, generous and not afraid to follow his dreams. He began by staging an annual music festival outside Harrisburg, he opened the best little music club Harrisburg will ever see, the Blue Front Lounge. He ended up seeing his dream of greater things come to life with The River City Blues Club and Dart Room. I played all those places, drove from Kentucky to play the grand opening of River City, wouldn’t have missed it for anything. Rick came to KY to help on several events with Mitch Ivanoff, Tin Can Buddha, and Boss Guitar. He was Mitch’s travel companion and handler, even tempered and ever helpful. Rick put others before himself, a quality we don’t see often enough. Goodbye and good luck wherever you’re headed big guy, the blues lost a real friend today. - Lee Carroll
Rick Hefelfinger has joined the dearly departed and he will always be remembered as the father of The Lost, Found and Dearly Departed picnics. As a former BSCP Board member, Rick worked diligently and quickly to
publicize our BSCP events. If you saw info in the newspaper, on a poster or a flyer or heard and announcement on TV or radio during his stint as PR Chair, Rick made that happen. When Rick stepped out of his BSCP Board position and retired his LFDD picnics, he kept the music alive at his Blue Front Lounge and recently as a partner in the River City Blues Club & Dart Room. In all of these busy projects of Rick’s, he was always a gracious host
Richard Hefelfinger ObituaryRichard L. Hefelfinger, 62, of Harrisburg, died on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 in Harrisburg Hospital. He was born on May 2, 1953 in Carlisle and is the son of Dorothy J. (Raudabaugh) Steele of Carlisle and the late William H. Hefelfinger. Rick was a 1971 graduate of Big Spring High School. He retired from Petroleum Products Corp in Harrisburg. Rick was currently a partner in the River City Blues Club and Dart Room in Harrisburg and had formerly owned and operated the Blue Front Lounge in Steeleton. Rick was also vital to planning and operating annual parties at the Harrisburg Postal Picnic Grounds that featured big name blues artists through the Lost and Found and Dearly Departed Company. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters; Diane K. Porter of Carlisle and Tracey L. Hefelfinger of Orrtanna, his step-mother, Gladys F. Hefelfinger of Fayetteville and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Rick was predeceased by his step-father, Herbert Steele, a niece, Teresa Bailey and a nephew, Douglas Bailey. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at the Mt. Zion Cemetery at the corner of Routes 174 and 74 near Churchtown. Rev. Lewis Splain will officiate the service. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity of your choice.

and met everyone with a big smile and a twinkle in his eyes and a sincere “Nice to see you” and a “Thank you for your support”. The music will continue but Rick will now be hosting from heaven. We will miss Rick. - Greg Hogg
As far as I could tell, Rick had a single-minded purpose: to bring people together for a good time that included food, drink and music. We are all here on this Earth to enjoy each other and all that life has to offer. Rick created that and we are blessed with so many joyous memories. - Hannah Sherman
Looking back, Rick was one of those rare individuals whose dream was to make others happy by bringing them together. His heart was full of love which he did his best to give freely. His oldest and dearest friends worked very hard to make this happen alongside of him. We all will miss him I’m sure as he left us with all that he had. – Mitch Ivanoff

A CENTRAL PA INTRODUCTION TO JIMMY PRITCHARD
by Greg Hogg
Hopefully many of you BSCP members and readers of this article had the opportunity to see and hear my Delaware blues buddy, Jimmy Pritchard and his band tear up the stage at the Dauphin County Wine & Music Festival or the After Jam Party at River City Blues Club & Dart Room on Saturday, June 13th. Powerful band!! Jimmy began playing his bass guitar professionally in 1980 and has “held down the bottom” ever since with and impressive list of local, regional and national artists. Shifting from a rock career beginning, Jimmy was bitten by the blues bug in 1989 and has been a stalwart bluesman ever since. Not an all inclusive list, by any means, Jimmy has joined the stage with Sister Blue, Socco, Randy Lippincott, Roger Girke, Mikey Jr., Matt Daniels, Gary Allegretto, Georgie Bonds, Garry Cogdell and others on the local/regional blues scene. Jimmy toured Europe, Canada and the U.S. with Sonny Rhodes and toured Canada and the U.S. with our Mississippi friend, the late Big Jack Johnson. He has also taken the stage along with national artists, Lonnie Shields, Chris Cain, Richard Ray Farrell, Arthur Adams, Frankie Lee and Albert Castiglia, to name a few. I’d say that Jimmy has kept some pretty good company! Having played his bass guitar on many CDs of artists listed above and others, Jimmy has recorded and released 3 CDs of his own. “Shoppin’ For The Blues” in 2007, “Goin’ Down 9” in 2010, and his latest “Lookin’ Back” which features 11 tracks from CDs that Jimmy recorded with some of these artist’s.

Phoenix, AZ blues guitarist, harmonica player, singer, songwriter, Johnny Tanner has recently released his 2015 debut CD of material from two earlier self-produced sessions. West Coast (Calif.) swing blues guitarist Jr. Watson, the Hollywood Fats Band rhythm section, Larry Taylor, bass, Richard Innes, drums … piano work by Fred Kaplan and tenor and baritone sax players, Jeff Turmes and Tom Faberge join Johnny on the tracks from the 1997 Pasadena Session. Another great California guitarist, Rusty Zinn, along with Billy Flynn both add guitar work, bassist Randy Bermudes and drummer, Richard Innes work with Johnny on the 2001 Berkley Session segment.
The “Juke Joint Rambler” CD features 14 tracks of classic-styled blues. Johnny Tanner features 5 original songs here and adds covers by Walter Jacobs ( AKA Little Walter) “I Got To Go”, ”It Ain’t Right”, ” Nobody But You”, …Chester Alan Burnett ( AKA Howlin’ Wolf) “I Didn’t Know”, … Ahmet Ertegun, “Lovey Dovey”… Eddie Jones “I Done Got Over It” … Sonny Boy Williamson I “Checking On My Baby”, “Stop Breaking Down” and K.B. Kennard “Bring Her Back To Me”.
Johnny Tanner handles all the vocals and harmonica playing here, ranging in blues styles from Chicago blues, West Coast Swing blues …. upbeat numbers to slow blues, Johnny mixes it all into this CD.
Currently Johnny is performing mostly in Arizona as Johnny Tanner & The Aces. I don’t know if this band gets out on the festival circuit or tours to the east coast …..we may not have the opportunity to see them live, but the “Juke Joint Rambler” CD gives us a nice sampling of Johnny’s work. Harmonica driven blues loving music listeners will enjoy this disc!
We are blessed in our area to have excellent harmonica players that jam for us at Thursday’s jams and/or work with their bands in the club scene. Buy blues CDs to add to your collection, listen to blues on Sirius/XM Bluesville or WXPN’s Saturday evening blues show …. But remember to get out and see and hear live performances, the musicians and venues that feature blues music need our support. I’ll be looking for you!!
