Blum Scholar Award Graduate Student Project Presentations Wednesday, February 22, 2017, 3:30-5pm Humanities 2, room 259 All are welcome to join us on February 22nd to hear presentations given by this year's UCSC Blum Scholar grant recipients. This event will showcase the seven UCSC graduate students who were awarded funding to facilitate their proposed research projects. All projects were begun and completed during summer 2016. The presentations will provide an overview of the project, it’s goals, the level of success, and any insights gleaned along the way. There will also be time for Q&A. This year’s projects include: Rachel Voss, Environmental Studies Cultivating community innovation: participatory farmer trials to boost yields through improved soil and water management in Senegal Katherine Ennis & Hamutahl Cohen, Environmental Studies Evaluating and contextualizing the factors contributing to food-insecurity for UCSC and Santa Cruz County Daniel Rudin, Film and Digital Media Labor rights are human rights: Improving workplaces through documentary and “labor beat” reporting Stephanie Webb, Environmental Studies Tilapia value chains for the poor: testing sustainable practices to meet ‘bottom of the pyramid’ demand in Egypt Rebecca Feinberg, Anthropology Between the Vines: Refugee resettlement and foreign labor in Italian wine production Monika Egerer, Environmental Studies No Place to Grow: A documentary and transmediaproject on urban agroecology, food sovereignty, and a community fight for land security Darrell Ruppell, DANM Rideables

Please join us on November 9th for presentations by this year's UCSC Blum Scholar grant recipients. This event will showcase three of the five UCSC undergraduate students who were awarded funding to facilitate research projects that promote poverty alleviation. All projects were started and completed during summer 2016. Presenters will discuss the goals of their project, key outcomes, and insights gleaned from their research.

Blum Scholar grants are offered to highly motivated students who are in good standing at UC Santa Cruz. Funding was awarded to students to pursue community-based research either domestically or abroad related to poverty, social enterprise, and participatory governance.
