Black & McDonald

A Tradition Of Quality Since 1921

INSIDE

Black & McDonald has acquired 100% ownership of Roberts Onsite Inc., an experienced multi-trade contractor providing construction and maintenance services to the ICI market in Southwest Ontario.

With a workforce of several hundred tradespeople, a strong track record of successful project

completion, and a wide array of capabilities, the addition of Roberts Onsite to Black & McDonald greatly increases our capabilities in the Kitchener / Waterloo area.

The change in ownership will not materially change the operations of Roberts Onsite; the company will continue under the leadership

of Chief Executive Officer Ted Schlotzhauer, Senior Vice President Dan Moore and Vice Presidents Mike Birmingham and Jeff Bierman. “Roberts Onsite is a very similar business to Black & McDonald, and they’re similar in culture as well” says B&M co-CEO Ian McDonald. “When Bruce and I met with Ted in February, we found a company with the same culture and long-term way of thinking as B&M” he said. “They are very strong in the millwrighting, rigging, electrical and mechanical trades, while we can help them develop technical expertise in service and facility management.”

Phil Taggart, Vice President, Southwest Ontario Region, says “we’re in the process of developing a combined business development strategy. Our goal is to make sure work gets performed by the group with the appropriate expertise, and that we work together to meet our customers’ needs. I’m impressed with the similarities between the two companies – we fit together very well.”

Roberts Onsite has developed a strong presence in the Kitchener / Waterloo industrial market, applying their expertise to major projects for clients including Toyota and CAMI Automotive.

“I strongly believe being under the Black & McDonald umbrella is a tremendous opportunity for all Roberts Onsite employees” says Mr. Schlotzhauer. “Given the strength of our people in both organizations and the abundance of available business opportunities, I am confident we will be able to leverage the skills and relationships from both businesses.”

The Quebec Region mechanical and construction division has been awarded the structural welding contract for a new bridge on Highway 30 also known as NA (Nouvelle Autoroute) 30.

The largest public-private highway project in Canada, NA 30 is designed to relieve congestion in the Montreal area.

Richard Leblanc, Project Manager, oversees the 40 B&M employees working the day shift and we forecast adding a night shift to meet the deadline. The entire B&M team – iron workers, ornamental welders, QA-QC coordinator, project engineers, and technical advisors – have to work in exceptional conditions, dealing with weather changes, 100% x-ray

inspection, and a site environment in open sky.

Upgrading Fortress Paper’s Thurso, Quebec PlantSaturday morning, 2:00 a.m.: B&M at work cutting a 24-inch water line, and adding a 15,000-lb. spool piece. We performed this 24-hour job in 12 hours.

Black & McDonald

Northern Ontario and Quebec Regions recently teamed up to perform a series of complex piping tie-ins connecting steam, condensate, screened water and air piping from a cellulose plant and a biomass cogeneration facility to Fortress Paper’s Thurso, Quebec plant.

A 500-person workforce including 20 B&M tradespeople completed the projects during a three-week fall shutdown of the plant. Mounting supports, pipe handling, welding and joint x-rays and thermal insulation in tight working areas over such a short duration made this an intense project. Even with a series of last-minute changes to the scope of work, the project was completed ahead of schedule.

Northern Ontario Region’s piping fabrication facility was used to prepare as many of the pipe spools and supports

as possible prior to the shutdown to maximize productivity during the outage. Our fabrication and site crews worked through nights and weekends to keep the project on track.

The quality assurance program called for x-ray of 100% of field welds. Our execution was flawless, no welds failed the inspection.

“Our crew was the best out there. We completed the original scope of the project in half the time, due to great communication, team spirit, and a willingness to succeed” says project manager Pascal Vinette. Other key people on the project include estimators Fern Groulx (NOR) and Andre Beaudoin (Quebec), and Superintendents Marcel Normand (Fabshop) and Leo Maisonneuve (Site Crew).

In the fall of 2010, Black & McDonald acquired V&V Refrigeration to provide marine, industrial and commercial refrigeration services throughout British Columbia.

Valentin Farkas, the owner of V&V, has joined B&M along with four technicians. Their capabilities include the design, manufacturing and installation of refrigeration systems including blast freezers, production area cooling, drive-in and walk-in coolers, and compressors with ammonia, freon and glycol applications. The team has served the BC market since 1975.

The acquisition has provided Black & McDonald’s British Columbia Region with immediate capabilities in the food and beverage, industrial and commercial refrigeration markets; clients include Canucks Sports and Entertainment, Seaspan, Saputo Canada, Hallmark Poultry, Mark Anthony Brands and BC Ferries.

The ability to service industrial refrigeration systems has allowed the Vancouver office to service new clients including VersaCold, Golden West Bakery and Sunrise Poultry.

The PFC was successfully installed offshore in August and AMEC Black & McDonald is now completing the offshore scope of work which includes welding (both structural and pipe), electrical, coatings, insulation and scaffolding. In addition to the trades, AMEC Black & McDonald is providing construction supervision, engineering, procurement and planning support to the project. Work is scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2012.

AMEC Black & McDonald’s overall safety performance on this project continues to be world class. We are proud of the performance of this team and their ability to execute the work in a safe and timely manner while working in the harsh offshore environment.

The summer of 2011 saw a new addition to the Black and McDonald Sheet Metal & Custom Fabrication facility at Pullman Court in Scarborough, Ontario.

A full coil line for linear duct manufacturing has replaced the facility’s existing half coil line. The full coil line can be operated by a single tradesperson, and is capable of manufacturing a five-foot linear duct, complete with forming of locks and can internally insulate the duct all in the same process, ending up with a finished piece of “L- shape” or wraparound duct. Duct sealer is automatically added in the seams and broken in less than a minute.

“The new addition will keep the fabrication facility current with technology and makes us more competitive in the demanding Greater Toronto HVAC market” says Bill Heath, Plant Manager.

The Sheet Metal & Custom Fabrication facility provides support for the Southern Ontario Electrical, Mechanical and Utility Regions, including structural steel assemblies for electrical substations as well as the Region’s ICI projects. The shop averages 20 tradespeople, rising to 40 during peak periods.

300 B&M Tradespeople Put “Ore on the Belt” in Labrador CityIn December 2010 a project team from Black & McDonald Atlantic mobilized to Labrador City to work on the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) Concentrate Expansion Project.

Operating since 1962, The IOC mine and process facilities have produced more

than one billion tonnes of crude iron ore. After processing at the Labrador City operations, the pellets and concentrate are transported south 418 km on the IOC-owned and operated railway to the year-round deep water port in Sept-Îles, Quebec. The trains can haul up to 24,000 tonnes of ore in 265 cars stretching some four km in length.

B&M handled the structural and mechanical work for the installation of a new Crusher Station and Overland Conveyor. The new Crusher Station included a truck dump hopper, apron feeder, crusher, and discharger system, along with four buildings to provide weather protection. Everything involved with this type of work is big and it’s heavy. Over 45 heavy lifts were required, involving a fully outfitted 440-ton crawler crane shipped from Nova Scotia.

The Overland Conveyor is a new, 6-km structural steel conveyor which carries the crushed iron ore to an ore barn for processing. The conveyor modules are assembled on the ground and then lifted 75 feet onto steel supports. Some of the modules exceed 100 feet in length and weigh in at 100 tons.

Working productively through a Labrador winter was not without its challenges. Some days just getting equipment to start was a major task, as was dealing with the constant snowfall keeping depths at four to six feet.

A project of this size (peak manpower exceeded 300 living in the IOC camp) involved a big commitment from all the team members. The on site leadership of

Lester Buckland, Elmo Upward and Derek Lane and the support provided by Angela Fyfe, Charles Leonard, Brad MacLean, and many others have helped to keep this project moving toward a

successful completionOur target date is to have “Ore on the

Belt” by December; we expect to complete the project early spring 2012.

Since 2009, The Department of Foreign and International Affairs (DFAIT) has brought a series of challenging projects to Black & McDonald Northern Ontario Region: renovations to Canadian Embassies in the Caribbean, Northern Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan & South America.

The projects include:•Design-build fit up of the new Canadian

Embassy in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

• Construction management services and fit up for the existing Canadian Embassy in Algiers, Algeria. B&M was the construction manager and general contractor on this project.

• Miscellaneous upgrades and repairs to the Canadian Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

• Fire protection upgrades and life safety improvements to the Canadian Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We were the general contractor on this assignment.

In 2010 and 2011, B&M secured several more international projects from DFAIT. At one time, we had people in Kabul, Afghanistan;

Islamabad, Pakistan; Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago; and Caracas, Venezuela. We are now ramping up our crew in Caracas and preparing to mobilize for a security upgrades design-build project in Kingston, Jamaica.

The team at Northern Ontario Region handling the DFAIT projects includes Shawn Hickey, Proposal Writer / Project Manager; Shawn Dolan, Electrical Superintendent; Andrew Boyle, Mechanical Superintendent; Refrigeration Foreman Corey Clouthier, and Engineering Manager JL Richards.

The People Resources Group at Black & McDonald believes the success of any business depends on the people who make up the team. Through continuous improvement and human resource initiatives our mission is to provide the right tools for our management and employees to enjoy long term business success.

Continuous ImprovementWe are always looking for ways to improve – how can we do something more efficiently; more cost effectively; faster or safer? Over the past five years, the B&M Way has strived to empower employees to bring forward their improvement ideas. Maybe it’s a more efficient way to store tools in our service trucks or the moving of the office copier to make it more efficient for all who use it. Simple ideas that might save five minutes a day, shared across the company, could potentially benefit a few hundred people. Using that example, 200 people saving that five minutes a day, would potentially save the company 4333 hours a year! At $20 an hour – that’s a savings of almost $87,000 a year!

The key is to share those ideas. If we keep the idea to ourselves, it is only good for us – but if we share it could potentially have some great benefits for Black & McDonald.

If there is an efficiency you have found, please let us know! Tell your Regional Improvement Coordinator or supervisor/manager.

The new Bright Ideas Program has been designed to encourage all employees to submit their continuous improvement ideas and is now available to all regions. This three-week program had a very successful pilot last year in the SWO region and they have decided to run this “Off The Shelf” program again. We look forward to similar success in other regions.

For more information about the Bright Ideas program or any other B&M Way initiative, contact your Regional Improvement Coordinator.

Human ResourcesThe HR team is currently working on updating the new

employee orientation hire kit with inclusions such as a separate office employee checklist and safety update, which will assist in more education initially to ensure our employees are off to a good start. We are also continuing to improve consistency, clarity, and communication regarding the implementation of policies and procedures among our regional offices. Other initiatives to look for in the upcoming months are defined career development paths for various roles within our company, mentorship program, and recruitment guidebook; all in an effort to support our commitment to employee retention and development.

It’s that time of year again when our Employee Survey provides the company with an opportunity to find out what our employees think about working at our company. We are committed to using the feedback provided to improve practices where required to enhance our employee’s overall experience. We value your feedback.

Don’t forget to check out the HR section on our internal network (sharepoint) where you can find out more about services offered with our employee assistance provider, Shepell.fgi and our benefits provider, Standard Life.

Black & McDonald’s human resources and continuous improvement efforts are a testament to its belief that success depends on the people within the organization. The People Resource Group strives to not only meet the needs of employees but also helps position Black & McDonald as an employer of choice.
