Waverly Park Participates inMy Benbrook Mile Program
Members of Waverly Park Garden Club, including (l-r) Margie Geiger, JoAnnTrinkle, Gwen Genius, Carol Stewart, Jacqueline Branum, Barbara Jenkins,Veronica Wingen, Linda Johnson and Diann Pilliod, recently met at Castle Parkin Dutch Branch Park to pick up litter as part of the My Benbrook Mile program.Members removed trash and debris from the playground and castle area as well asthe surrounding ball fields and duck pond.
The award-winning garden club, most of whose members live in Benbrook, isknown on state, regional and national levels for outstanding involvement in manycommunity service and youth projects. In addition to My Benbrook Mile, membersvolunteer at the Benbrook Trash Bash, maintain the entrance garden at theBenbrook Community Center/YMCA, work weekly with students at the WaverlyPark Elementary School garden, sponsor conservation-minded Woodsy Owl andSmokey Bear poster and poetry submissions, honor a deserving neighborhood yardwith Yard of the Month, assist at-risk children with gardening projects and provideresources for therapy gardening for our returning military veterans.

Greetings and salutations! I would describe for yousome of my experiences thusly, as a member of VFWPost 5617, located on Cherry Lane, in WhiteSettlement.
The VFW, which stands for Veterans of ForeignWars, is a conglomeration of truly unique and inspiringindividuals from all walks of life. We are military vet-erans that have either seen first-hand combat situations,or served in combat zones that induced stressful envi-ronments from which we survived, sometimes notcompletely intact, yet always with a deep desire toserve again if the duty calls. We all agreed to kill, die,and, most importantly, fight for our fellow Americancitizens, our beloved United States Constitution, andOld Glory our bearing standard.
I never talked about my military experience forwell over 25 years, and to find a place that I could sharemy experiences has been a blessing. Our VFW post hasdone amazing things that would make anyone humbleby comparison. During this past holiday season, weadopted two families of veterans, in order to make cer-tain that the children of those families had amazingChristmases. A long-time member of our VFW post,suffering health issues,was in need so we held araffle and were able toearn enough money topurchase him an electriclift chair, and alsoinstalled hand rails in hisbathroom.
Thank you for yourtime and consideration. Ihope my words have donesome semblance of justiceto an already outstandingorganization.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Kayla N. Bransomgraduated from basic military training at Joint BaseSan Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. The airman com-pleted an intensive, eight-week program that includedtraining in military discipline and studies, Air Forcecore values, physical fitness and basic warfare princi-ples and skills. Airmen who complete basic trainingearn four credits toward an associate in applied sciencedegree through the Community College of the AirForce.
Bransom earned the “Thunderbolt” award for herphysical fitness training score of 98.2. Additionally,Bransom will attend Technical School at Joint BaseSan Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, for materiel man-ager.
A 2014 graduate of Castleberry High School,Bransom is the daughter of Vivian Mayo-Martin andVictor Martin of Fort Worth.

Old newspapers provide a wealth of insight intohistory and critical events as they were unfoldingthrough time. Gone are the days of wading throughback issues of newspapers to do genealogy research.Today, the Internet and digitization of old newspapershas made everything just a click away. Ila Johnson willexplain how to access newspapers easily at home, yourlocal library, or at your local Family History Center.
This presentation is part of the society’s monthlymeeting. It will be held at the Fort Worth CentralLibrary (downtown), 500 W. Third St., in the TandyAuditorium. The meeting is free and open to the pub-lic. Parking meters are free after 6 p.m. The Third St.Garage is free for two and a half hours—attendees canstop by the library’s front desk to have their parkingticket validated. The City of Benbrook will host the AmericanVeterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) Vietnam WallMarch 30 to April 2.
This 80 percent replica of the Vietnam Wall is 360feet long and includes every name from the permanentwall in Washington D.C.
The AVTT Vietnam Wall will be on display 24hours a day for four days at the Dutch Branch ParkAthletic Complex, 1899 Winscott Road in Benbrook.

For April, the adult book clubs, Bent Corners Book Club and Coffee
Break Book Circle, are reading “Cooking for Picasso” by Camille Aubray.
The library offers weekly computer classes every Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Each class is paced for beginners and is intended to teach attendees basic
skills with a specific computer application.
No prior knowledge of the topic being taught is necessary, though atten-
dees should know the fundamentals of operating a computer (i.e., how to use
a keyboard and mouse).
The classes are free, and no registration is required. We will have an open
lab for your specific computer-related questions on March 29.
On Friday, March 24 at 10:30 a.m., the Perot Museum Tech Truck will
visit the library to teach kids all about bugs. There will be educational activ-
ities, learning centers and snacks.
The library will start a new program, Date Night at the Library, on Friday,
March 24 at 6 p.m.
Once a month on Fridays, after the library is closed, we are going to have
a performance, either streamed or live, for those who would like an entertain-
ing evening on a budget.
In honor of the release of the new “Beauty and the Beast” movie, we will
be offering a showing of an interview with Alan Menken, the composer of
the film’s score.
Board game lovers of all ages are encouraged to attend Family Game
Night on Saturday, March 25 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Attendees are welcome to bring in food to share at this potluck gather-
ing, and we greatly appreciate anything you choose to contribute. The library
will provide drinks.
Avid readers are invited to attend Different Pages, the library’s adult
book club for those who would like to share what they’ve been reading
recently with other book lovers, on Tuesday, March 28 at 11 a.m.
There will be light snacks to enjoy while you talk books and socialize.
Teens, join us on Tuesday, March 28 at 4:30 p.m. for Anime Club. All
teens who enjoy Japanese comics and animation are welcome.
On Tuesday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Tinker Tuesday, our program that
provides instruction on our MakerSpace equipment, our project will be
engraving on drinking glasses.
We will be teaching basic Corel Draw skills and will work through the
entire process, start to finish, on using the engraver.

The Benbrook Senior Center, located at 1010 Mercedes St., offers many
activities for seniors. Seniors are encouraged to join in the activities at the
Benbrook Senior Center.
The center offers a variety of activities from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday
through Friday, then extends the hours until 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and
Thursdays.
Friday, March 24 - “42” will be played at 9 a.m. Line dancing practice
will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Monday, March 27 - Wright Patterson Mah Jongg will be played at 10:30
a.m.
Tuesday, March 28 - “42” will be played at 9 a.m. and Chair Chi will be
from 12:30 to 1 p.m.
Wednesday, March 29 - Seniors will have a lunch presentation at 11 a.m.
by the Senior Medicare Patrol on senior scams. Seniors should sign up.
Thursday, March 30 - Senior computer class and Mexican Train will be
at 1 p.m.
Friday, March 31 - “42” will be played at 9 a.m. Line dancing practice
will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.A country western dance will be held at the
Center from 6:30 to 9 p.m. with live music. There is no charge.
Seniors may book a free tax filing with AARP at the Center through April
13, on Tuesdays and Thursdays only, from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Call the

The Waverly Park Garden Club has awardedYard of the Month for March to Ben and ShawnPearson. The Pearsons have lived in their homefor nine years.
Beautiful pansies in rich colors of purple, yel-low and white interspersed with red tulips line thebeds that extend across the front and corner oftheir home.
Manicured ligustrum shrubs provide a back-ground for these attractive beds. A large planter of
Waverly Park Garden Club Yard of the Monthred geraniums adorns the porch area.
The large mulberry tree in the lawn is sur-rounded by a bed of colorful red, yellow, orangeand purple tulips sprinkled with daffodils through-out.
They also have pansies in a variety of colorsgrowing in a bed surrounding the white mailbox atthe curb.
The Pearsons have been working in their yardin the Timbercreek area during the fall and winterseasons and the fruit of all their labor is a beauti-ful, colorful yard to welcome the spring season.

The Texas Rangers in its long history in the state has produced legendaryfigures in its quest to uphold the law. Captain William Jesse McDonald wasone of many examples.
McDonald's life had led him to serve at different times as a schoolteacher, shopkeeper, rancher, and eventually becoming one of the mostrespected law men in Texas.
He was born in 1852 in eastern Mississippi. He was still a child when hisfather, Enoch McDonald, volunteered to fight with the Confederacy duringthe Civil War. But in 1862, his father was killed at the Battle of Corinth.After, his widowed mother took them to Henderson County in East Texas.
He was stubborn from a young age. At the age of 16 in 1868, he report-edly got into a fight with Union troops and found himself charged with trea-son.
Only the intervention of a prominent local officials resulted in thecharges being dropped.
However, he had a keen mind and attended Soule Business College inNew Orleans, graduating in 1872. He became a school teacher for a timebefore opening a couple of stores in East Texas.
Later, he became a deputy sheriff in Wood County. In 1883, he and hiswife moved to Wichita Falls to take up ranching.
They moved further west to Quanah several years later. Cattle thieves andorganized gangs terrorized the few settlers in the area, hiding in the vaststretches of empty land.
He became a deputy sheriff again, and as raids worsened, McDonald wasmade a special Texas Ranger, attacking marauders far and wide to finallybring order to the area.
As a result, in 1891, he was named captain of the Texas Rangers FrontierBattalion, where he and his fellow Rangers worked to protect citizens fromfurther raids and to act as the police for remote locations that had none.
As a Ranger, he had a reputation as a keen observer and tracker. Long
before forensics became a standard tool of law enforcement, McDonald wasusing the same principles in solving cases and capturing fugitives, an other-wise nearly impossible task on the seemingly endless stretches of land acrossthe state in the late 1800s.
He found himself in many shootouts, including one with the sheriff ofChildress County in 1893.
Though shot on several occasions himself, he reportedly never tookanother life, but his skill with a gun and reputation preceded him and used itto defuse many difficult situations without a weapon.
In February 1896, McDonald solved a bank robbery in daring fashion.Bandits had seized $600 at a bank in Wichita Falls, killed one man, andwounded another in a blaze of bullets in broad daylight.
Within two hours of receiving the message on a train, he had arrived atthe station, and ridden out of the city with a posse of five other Rangers inpursuit of the murderers. They charged through the brush on a blustery win-ter day and caught them within hours.
In 1905, he briefly served as a bodyguard for President TheodoreRoosevelt. When he retired from the Rangers in 1907, he took a job as staterevenue agent, ultimately collecting more than one billion dollars for Texas.
In 1912, incoming President Woodrow Wilson also tapped McDonald ashis personal bodyguard. In recognition of his work, Wilson namedMcDonald as United States Marshal for North Texas.
In early 1918, he died of pneumonia at his home in Wichita Falls.McDonald has since been inducted in the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame inWaco in recognition of his colorful life and unwavering dedication as a lawman.

The City of Benbrook encourages individualsand groups to participate in the My Benbrook MileProgram. This program allows citizens the oppor-tunity to contribute to a cleaner environment byworking together to clean up city roadways andpark areas.
Participating groups self-monitor a road orpark and plan clean-up events based on the sched-ules of group members. Groups may plan month-ly clean-ups or as the area dictates.
Groups may deposit collected trash and debris(in plastic bags) at the City Maintenance Shoplocated at 467 Winscott Road. The City can pro-vide trash bags, latex gloves and reflective safetyvests as requested.
Once a My Benbrook Mile location has beendetermined and the group establishes a commit-ment to adopt the area, a road sign designating thegroup is erected in the area.

The City of Benbrook hosts several free envi-ronmental collection events each year. Theseevents include Electronic Waste collection,Document-Shredding, and Household HazardousWaste collection. Benbrook PoliceDepartment IntroducesExchange Zone
The Benbrook Police Department recently des-ignated two parking spots directly in front of thestation, located at 1080 Mercedes Street, as an“Exchange Zone.”
These spots are intended to provide a safe loca-tion for Benbrook residents to meet for buying andselling goods through web-based platforms such asCraigslist and Facebook.
Surveillance cameras have been installed in thearea, and the spots are labeled “Exchange Zone”and striped with green paint.
There is no cost and no need to call ahead ormake reservations.
