Well it’s a bright sunny day but with a bitter, cold wind. What better to do than get the March Burbage News ready for the printers tomorrow with a hot drink and biscuits by our side? With the thought of Spring not being far away, although mother nature may have a surprise or two left for us, it is time to get ready for the challenges that lie ahead for 2012 and we are asking for help for the following roles: Community Pages Liaison, Online News & Diary Editor, and Event Organisers & Helpers. So are there some more community minded people out there willing to help? If so please contact us at: [email protected] Over the past couple of months it has been a joy to see entertainment in the village having good numbers of attendees at events held at the Village Hall, Burbage
& Easton Royal British Legion and others. Let’s hope this continues throughout the year as your Burbage News will endeavour to hold some community events such as music or quiz evenings or anything our readers and residents believe would be a great evening of entertainment for many people in the village to enjoy. Burbage Jazz Evening
Grey skies to Blue Skies The Jazz evening at Burbage Village Hall on Thursday 9 February was a great success with a full house gathered to watch the Tammy Weis Trio. The music and songs of Tammy Weis were a very good mix of jazz standards such as Misty by Errol Garner, Blue Skies and The Nearness of You and included music written by herself and pianist Tom Cawley. Tammy is a very accomplished and engaging performer and between songs kept up a steady banter between herself, her pianist, bassist and the audience. By the amount of applause given to the trio it was obvious everyone enjoyed themselves in such a convivial atmosphere. Thank you BRATS for giving us a great time.

Burbage Village Theatre Doesn’t Exist - Yet!
Mich Angell Amateur drama groups can produce a rich social interaction in a community, bringing together people from all walks of life. I am looking for individuals or groups to help start up a community theatre, to bring entertainment to the village, by its people, for its people, starting with a concert in May or June. The content will include music, singing, dance and comedy or any other talent which might come to light. Do you or your children sing/dance/play an instrument/tell jokes/read or write poetry etc.? Are you a good organiser, can you sew or have a great imagination? Are you between the ages 8 and 100? Don't hide your light, no previous experience required, just a sense of humour and lots of enthusiasm. If you would like more information, please don't hesitate to contact me. I will be at the Market and Meet event at the Village Hall on Saturday 10th March if you would like to meet with me and have a chat.

The group met on the morning of Saturday 18th February to do a variety of stitching - machine, hand stitching, cross stitching and knitting We are a friendly group who enjoy learning from each other and always welcome newcomers A date for March has yet to be confirmed but please look out for posters in the village and make a date to join us then!

On January 19th the AGM was held. Minutes of the previous year were read and approved. Finances were in very good order and the Fashion Show held last October was deemed to have been a particularly successful event in helping boost them. A questionnaire was handed out to all members for “customer research” into future programme events and the responses were most helpful. Cynthia Mitchell stepped down from the committee as secretary and we thank her most sincerely for all her hard work in that post over the years. She will be replaced by a new member to the committee, Jan Ritchie. Raffle prizes were won by Elaine Dutton, Betty Dudley and Jean Bierschenk. Some very excellent cheese and wine was taken, whilst catching up with friends, to conclude the proceedings. The next meeting should be fascinating : Mrs Pam Bemment will give an illustrated talk about her life on the Kennet and Avon Canal and adventures on the tidal Thames. Be sure not to miss it on Thursday, March 15th in the Church Centre at 7.30pm. Guests are very welcome to join us.

Rule - No comfort food
Comfort food: sweets, chocolate, biscuits, crisps, cakes, fizzy drinks
Why?: Comfort food is too high in carbs (sugar) and contains a huge amount of empty calories with no nutritional value.
Instead: Have raspberries, either cold (available frozen) or hot, mixed with plain! yoghurt or cream and seasoned with cinnamon. As natural sweetener you can use Stevia (available online). A piece of 90% chocolate is also fine. Observe where and why you get “the urge” for comfort and ignore the silent “pick me” calls from the sweet shelves in shops and petrol stations.

In order to raise funds for the next Burbage community defibrillator we are holding
The Great Burbage Swish at the Church Centre on
Friday 30th March 4.00 - 8.00pm.
Entrance £3 for adults and free for children. Refreshments and games will also be available.
In the village currently we have one defibrillator located at the White Hart and we are
aiming to get at least four so that everyone in the village has access to one. We hope you
will never need to use it, but we think it is better to have them and not need them, than need
one and not have one.
We are asking for donations of any unwanted good quality items such as clothes, books,
toys, music, DVDs etc. and at the event you will be have the opportunity to buy other
people’s unwanted items. In effect this event is like a big swap, one person’s
unwanted goods may be just the treasure you are looking for. Donations can
be made in advance to the White Hart or on the day from 3pm at the Church
Centre.
Please support us in any way that you can so that one day we could save a life.

Tennis Club AGM 7.30pm in the White Hart

The children have been enjoying our ‘Transport’ topic this term. We have been doing lots of junk modelling and painting with transport related shapes. The children have also done some lovely pictures of tractors, trains and boats made out of different shapes to help with shape recognition. These are on display in Pre-school. Once the weather is warmer, we will also be setting up a car wash outside to wash all the ride-ons! The latest additions to our sensory garden are some colourful beach huts. These will soon be joined by an ‘ice cream kiosk’ and a bench ready for the warmer spring weather. Burbage Pre-school is open for children from 2½ - 5 years during term times. Morning sessions are Monday – Friday 9.15am – 11.45am, lunch club is Monday – Friday 11.45am – 12.30pm and afternoon sessions are Monday & Wednesday 12.30pm – 3.00pm. Anyone interested in their child joining the Pre-school can contact our Pre-school Leader, Mrs Janet Burstow, on 01672 811420 during Pre-school hours or 01672 810736 at any other time. Crofton Beam Engines and Cafe reopens on the 10th March and will be open everyday from 10.30-5pm until the 7th October. This year marks the 200th birthday of the Boulton and Watt Engine, the oldest working steam engine in the world. In this special year to enable more people to see this historic engine we have altered our pricing policy. We have introduced a season ticket so for the price of just one steam day visit you can revisit the engines as many times as you like for up to one calendar year. Under 16's accompanied by a fee paying adult are FREE and our static prices have been reduced. There is no charge to visit our lovely cafe and grounds. During the Easter weekend 7/8/9th April the engines will be in steam for the first time this year. Also a SPRING SHOW with competitions for daffodils, spring flowers, eggs homecraft and photography is being held. There will be children's classes and on Easter Sunday Easter egg hunts. Dear Everybody Well, after what seems a very long winter, although admittedly we have not had as much snow as last year, but still some very cold temperatures, the signs of God’s promise and provision are already appearing! Every year I am surprised again when apparently against all the odds, the snowdrops force their way through rock-hard ground and into fresh white bloom. The beautiful orange and purple of the crocuses are making a blanket of colour over grass that has been trampled on throughout the year and the daffodils will appear on cue all ready for picking for our Mothering Sunday Service on 18th March. The evenings are drawing out nicely and I am no longer coming out of work in the dark so that makes me feel better! And there are some amazing sunsets, all signs of a new Spring and Summer. It is a time charged with expectancy and excitement and optimism of what this year, yet another year, will bring. This year we have much to enjoy: the churches have various Holy week and Easter services at the end of the month and into April and everyone is very welcome to any of these. In Burbage this year we are also putting on an ‘Easter Experience’ in church where there will be various corners of the church set up recounting the Easter story with displays and narration. The children from the school are already set to come and ‘experience’ it! Why not pop in and take a look. Nationally too we have the Olympics - maybe some of you are lucky enough to have tickets to go and spectate - and there will be numerous Diamond Jubilee celebrations to look forward to which will bring communities together in celebration. I hope and pray that this year there will be things that you will enjoy and celebrate as we are again a part of the rhythm and cycle of life in this beautiful part of Wiltshire. And most importantly, in all of it we can be assured of the goodness of God who wants to celebrate with us and unfailingly blesses us with it all. PCC Away Day 21st January 2012 If Captain Francesco Schettino of the Costa Concordia was as negligent as the media are currently portraying, would you be able to forgive him if your child or parent had drowned? These are the sort of challenging questions that we discussed in small groups as the PCC met to look at forgiveness at Harnhill on 21st January. We looked at what a Christian view of forgiveness might be, and how a non-Christian’s view may differ from this, before asking why forgiveness can be so hard. In between our discus-sions we heard a variety of short readings from inspirational people who had found their way to forgiveness despite suffering appallingly at the hands of others. After lunch, Martina spoke very courageously and personally of forgiveness in the context of the church family and I am sure we could all relate to what she said in our own hearts. Barry is a hard task master and soon had us grappling with another challenging thought: what groups would be hardest to forgive? These were tough questions. There was disagreement, puzzlement and some very different characters there that day and we all learnt more about ourselves and our friends. There were some strong truths that also came out of the discussion which we all did agree on!
• Every person and every hurt will need handling differently.
• That on the cross Jesus asked his Father to ‘forgive them’ and we will need to work with God’s Spirit to reach forgiveness.
• Forgiveness comes through humility, not pride; through compassion not through judgment - just as Jesus forgives us.
• Finally, that God sees all sin as sin and we need to see all hurts to us as needing forgiveness.
Finally we were all asked to think of a person with whom we had unresolved hurt and to pray through that situation, asking for forgiveness ourselves and for love for them. Linda finished the day with a short and lovely contemplation entitled ‘Forgiveness – choose Life!’ including Colossians 3.v13 ‘Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you’. Thank you so much to Barry for planning and leading the day, to Thelma for the worship, Linda for the ending and for the PCC for producing lively and informative discussion. Dare we not forgive?

The Ladies’ Group will be attending ‘Releasing your full potential’ with Mrs Bryony Springate on Saturday 26
th May 2012
Bryony will cover the following during the day: What traps you and stops you firing on all cylinders? How can you be set free to realise all that God has for you? Through the day, we shall be looking at the “answers” to the two questions, using examples from scripture, and also looking at ways to help ourselves. There will be prayer offered at the end of each session, and hopefully you will be encouraged and enthused! The day course starts at 10am with worship. Refreshments are served midway through the morning, and lunch is provided at 1pm. Lunch, is included in the £20 charge for the day and although Harnhill do provide a vegetarian option, they are unable to cater for any other diet. We will be stopping for a meal on the way back from Harnhill. Please book your place with Debbie Brown on 01672 810853.
It is that time of year again, except a few weeks earlier! This year the Men’s Group weekend is a couple of weekends earlier and is Friday 27
th – Sunday 29
th April.
The weekend will focus on the Lord’s Prayer with three talks: ‘your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven’; ‘forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who have sinned against us’; ‘give us today our daily bread’. How often have you said those words without really stopping to think what they mean; really mean? Well here is your chance! Music: We are blessed to have Tim with us for the weekend (he did the music for Justin’s midweek meeting talk this month) so we should have some great worship time together. AGM for All Saints Church - 25th March 2012 This is held in the context of Morning Worship. Remember this important event in our church year. As long as you are on the Electoral Roll, you have a vote and can apply to be part of our PCC. Deanery Mothers’ Union Are holding a service on 7th March, 2pm at St John the Baptist in Pewsey. This will also be a time of looking forward to the future and what the Mothers’ Union will be doing in the future. Christopher and Valerie are a couple with a strong wander lust which eventually brought them to Burbage in October 2010! They now live in Meadow View, which many of us older readers will remember as the site of the Old Village Hall. In reality they chose Burbage because it is mid way between where their two children live, so they can visit them without too much difficulty. Their son still lives in New Malden and their daughter in Cardiff with her husband and two children. They have been pleased to discover what a lively village and church, we have here. Christopher's wanderings began at the end of the last war, when he returned to this country after being born in Bermuda. He says that he doesn’t remember anything about it because he was quite tiny when his family returned here. Valerie, on the other hand, was born much nearer, at East Sheen in Surrey. They met in 1972 in Nairobi, Kenya, and were married two years later at Christ Church New Malden, Surrey, which they attended regularly. It was here that they bought their first house and lived until they moved to Burbage.
Meet Your Community – Christopher & Valerie Davis Interview by John Guy
It was Christopher's job that brought him to Kenya where he met Valerie. He was working as a travelling accountant for Inter Continental Hotels. During the three years he worked for them he said that he virtually lived out of a suitcase. Perhaps this is where he first developed his wander lust! After they were married he continued as an accountant for various international companies. His last job was with a very large law firm in central London for five years looking after all the partners’ finances. He also used his accounting skills as treasurer for his church in New Malden for twenty years. This he now continues as treasurer for St. James Church in Clerkenwell, where he spends a couple of days a week. He also uses these financial skills here in Burbage where he has become the treasurer of the local Scouts. Most of Valerie's work has been involved with working with children and young people. After she graduated from London University she spent a year
teaching in Kenya through the V.S.O. scheme. She taught botany to agricultural students at a college in western Kenya. This was followed by five years teaching back in the UK before she returned to Kenya in 1970 to teach at Limuru Girl’s School a few miles west of Nairobi. She took a few years off from teaching after the children were born before returning to the classroom. Valerie continued her interest in young people as a Sunday School teacher and Guide leader at Christ Church. She continues this link when she returns to help with a Brownie Holiday in March each year. 'Sport is a big thing in my life,' Christopher told me. Over the years he has been very active in various areas of sport. He lamented that perhaps he is now getting too old to take up with new clubs here, though he has become involved with the table tennis group which meets informally in the Church Centre. His one big claim to fame was that in 1962 he won the British School Boys’ Tetrathlon championship held over a whole weekend at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. It all sounds rather too energetic to me! As I have already said; Christopher and Valerie do seem to have a distinct wander lust. No sitting on a beach for these two! They explained to me that they are independent travellers and have often just set off across Europe in their car for summer holidays. They like to go off the beaten track they said, which included walking holidays and mountain climbing in the Alps. Travelling by train is another way they enjoy their holidays. They told me about their train journey from London to Hong Kong via the Trans-Siberian Railway which they did think was a bit of a long journey! While they were in Hong Kong they were nearly thrown out
of the well known, rather expensive 'Peninsula Hotel' because Christopher had worn sandals with his smart casuals! Valerie told me that, following her retirement and to coincide with her niece’s wedding, one of her most memorable train journeys was across Australia when she travelled from Perth to Sydney in 'Kangaroo Class’ which meant sitting in the same seat for three days and nights! Just over three years ago Christopher and Valerie went to visit and help some friends who were missionaries in Burkina Faso. Valerie helped with the home schooling of their three children and Christopher, apart from helping with the audit of the Mission accounts, made frames covered with netting to put over the dormitory windows as protection from mosquitoes. These dormitory blocks had been built so that pupils from more distant villages wouldn't have to make the long walk, often many miles, from their homes every day. He also painted some headings for picture boards to be put up around the churches, making sure they were spelled correctly as his French isn't very good! While they were in Burkina Faso they were able to meet Eugenie, a girl that they have been sponsoring for some years, and her family. They have been sponsoring her through an organisation called 'Compassion' which supports children in many Third World Countries.. Our current treasurer, Philip Marsh, has indicated that he would like to stand down in April after 3 years in the role, due to work commitments. He will be happy to explain what is involved to anyone able to assist and assures me that it is not very onerous. The Committee met on the 31st January 2012 when a wide range of matters were discussed. Following an approach to Wiltshire County Council permission has been given for signs directing to the Surgery to be installed on the High Street and Suthmere Drive. The Council have agreed to make and install the signs and they should be in place shortly. Would you believe some people in the village are unaware that we have Doctors and a surgery! We would remind patients if they do not wish their medical records to be included in the proposed scheme for keeping of records on a national basis then the Surgery has the forms for you to “opt out “ of the scheme so that your records remain exclusively with your G.P. The analysis of the Survey is about 60% complete and the final results should be known shortly. The findings will be on the Committee’s Notice board in the Surgery, on the Surgery website and in the “News “ The Surgery has donated paperback books for sale at 50p each in the waiting area and donations of paperback books are welcome. On 3rd February we held our annual Silent Auction, raising funds for the British Heart Foundation, in memory of our dear friend Richard Flint, and it was such a great morning that we will be giving Pauline £362. THANK YOU so much for your support in donating the lots, bidding and monies. There were some great items, so look out for Joy & Karen with their new handbags, Amy on a horse, Eleri with her Haine & Smith sunglasses, Pam enjoying a yummy meal at the White Hart & Sarah in her pink sarong! Working for the BBC’s Natural History Unit radio department, I’ve had the privilege of being given opportunities to see the best wildlife anyone could wish for. But wildlife on one’s doorstep is just as exciting. The crow family, corvids, have long fascinated me, so it was on a late January afternoon returning from Marlborough I observed a number of jackdaw pairs in the stately trees on East Grafton’s village green. Jackdaws are monogamous and pair for life. Look at jackdaws around your chimney pots, and 9 times out of ten they will be in pairs. There in the sun on a late winter’s afternoon fifty or so pairs, noisily chattered that familiar jak jak, in what is known as pre-roosting behaviour. I was eager to find the roost. Taking my cue from birds flying towards Wolf Hall, I followed these black shapes down the aptly named Dark Lane. It was not long before I found a flock of probably a thousand birds; scattered like black confetti in mature trees around me. Only in the winter do large jackdaw roosts develop, often with rooks, and it is a mystery why they do this. Starling roosting behaviour is well known, however this aerial synchronicity of two different species, rooks and jackdaws, is for me one of the most stunning aerial spectacles in nature. Would they display this afternoon as the sun set over Burbage? Well sadly not. They changed course and flew back towards Wilton windmill and I lost them. I’d failed, but that is the excitement of wildlife watching. We never quite know what will happen. Walking back along Dark Lane, the colours intensified, the silhouetted trees grew maybe just a little taller; one last opportunity then for an image of dusk in this wonderful part of Wiltshire. Tomorrow is another day.

Well it was great to attend the latest Parish Council meeting held at the Church Centre on Monday 13th February, and for nearly a year to now have all councillors in attendance. Important meeting dates: Two important meetings for your diaries. The Annual Parish meeting (the non parish council meeting) is booked for Wednesday 4th April in the Village Hall and the bar will be open. The other meeting is the Parish Council Annual General meeting which will be held on Monday 9th April at the Church Centre. The monthly Parish Council meeting will take place immediately after the AGM. At the AGM all sub-committees will agree their terms of reference and who will be on the committees. These are all, bar the Finance committee, legally allowed to have members of the public on them, so if you are interested please attend. Burbage Youth Council: By the time you read this article some of the Burbage Youth Council will have visited the Aldbourne Youth Council at their new premises and have the opportunity to discuss how Burbage can develop its Council and progress forwards. Wellbeing and maintenance of the Parish: Following were considered: (1) The contracts for the grass cutting are under review. We are looking at incorporating other areas of responsibility so as to reduce costs. (2) Also being considered are traffic calming measures such as decorative gates at the main entrances to the village. (3) The Community Payback scheme has now confirmed dates in May for the cleaning up of the footpath from the White Hart to Ailesbury Way.

(4) The grit bins have been reviewed and will be filled up as required in case of any more wintry conditions. (5) By the time this magazine is received the rest of the Jubilee tree planting will have taken place at the south of the
village by the roundabout. (6) The new footpath has been cambered to remove the problem of water being retained on it. Community Communication: An initiative by the Burbage Village Hall to have a Saturday market from 11:00am to 3:00pm for village user groups to be present and explain what they are offering the community, and for local traders to sell their goods, will be taken up by the Parish Council who will have a couple of councillors present so that any questions or concerns can be raised by residents and taken back to the next council meeting for further discussion. The results of any questions or concerns will be formally communicated by the Clerk to the residents raising them and I will publish in my monthly letter (space allowing). The timing of this initiative is to give those residents who perhaps work late during the week and cannot make Parish meetings, the opportunity of a face to face discussion with a councillor. Footpaths A new path to Wotton Rivers

Footpath clearance has continued this month but will stop after one more session as the bird breeding season starts. Signing and stile repair will continue. I would like to thank my willing band of helpers for their efforts When I completed my survey of Burbage’s footpaths I found a different route to Wootton Rivers that as far as I could tell was rarely if ever used due to poor signing and its overgrown state. It has now been cleared and marked. To use the route drop down the hill from Stibb Green to the Old Savernake Hotel and follow the tow path to Wharf Bridge. Here you have to walk 50 metres along the Marlborough Road until you reach a sign for a footpath following the field margin. Go along this and turn north into Leigh Hill Copse winding your way between the trees to the west of the fire break until you reach the track where you turn left and follow it out to the road down to Brimslade Farm. Here you can either turn south and rejoin the tow path or continue on another footpath that starts just north of the farm and ends up in the car park of the Royal Oak! Community Speedwatch Jane Dyson
A couple of months ago I reminded you about the Wiltshire Community Speed Watch programme. This is a county-wide action towards the problem of speeding traffic. Burbage Parish Council is aware of a few complaints regarding speeding in and around our village and is keen to bring together our complaints to get some action taken. Issues reported so far include fast traffic through Durley, Marlborough Rd and elsewhere. But we need YOU to report issues as often as they happen, so that the next stage can be taken. The next stage is a police investigation, and a survey using a ‘metrocount’. If we get to this stage I will be back looking for volunteers to help but for now what we need to do, is report any and all issues, so we are taken seriously. The County’s Area Boards are tasked with monitoring and co-ordinating this issue and there is a reasonably easy way to log issues with them yourselves. Go to: http://goo.gl/lPsV7.
