the recent past, Crenson follows Baltimore's political evolution from an empty expanse of marsh and hills to a complicated city with distinct ways of doing business. Revealing how residents at large engage (and disengage) with one another across an expansive agenda of issues and conflicts, Crenson shows how politics helped form this complex city's personality. Now a Hopkins Professor Emeritus of Urban Government and American Political Development, he is the author of seven books, including his most recent Baltimore, A Political History.

Both these meetings promise much of current and historical interest. Watch your mail for your invitation to the Closing Luncheon. We urge you to attend; more important, bring a friend to share these presentations.

Warm Stories on a Cold Day During November and December, several chapter members met for the class on Jews in America. We watched a PBS documentary and learned about the different waves of migration, where the Jews came from and where they settled, how they earned a living, grew in prominence, took care of each other, and fought for social justice. For our last session the noted historian Gilbert Sandler made a guest appearance to provide the introduction to the PBS film on Jews in Maryland. He spoke for 30 minutes to a crowd of 25 BNC members and several spouses and friends, enthralling all with his warmth, strong voice and knowledge about the early Jewish families that settled here in Baltimore. Whether you grew up here or moved here later, there was much to learn and enjoy. Ask us about the first dairy to need a liquor license (hint: egg nog), how horseradish became a million dollar industry, why we have two country clubs in Pikesville, or why all the large downtown department stores had Jewish names. It was a wonderful way to stay warm on such a cold day, and we appreciate Gil Sandler sharing his time with us.

Share Your New Ideas as Spring BloomsAfter this cold and icy winter we are all looking forward to spring and new life appearing on trees and in gardens. For our BNC chapter, spring is also the time for new ideas. Both the Nominating Committee and the Live and Learn Committee will be meeting throughout the spring to plan new leadership and new classes for the upcoming 2018 – 2019 year. And we need your input! The current Nominating Committee is being led by Brenda Cohen. She will be establishing her committee and starting to hold meetings in the near future. If you are a current board officer or committee chair, expect to be contacted soon by a committee member about plans for next year. If you wish to join the Nominating Committee, our BNC board, or know of someone you think would make a great addition to our board, please contact Brenda at 581-2229 or [email protected]. The current Live and Learn Committee is being led by Leslie Sandler, Diane Burkom, Rona Greene, Charlotte Stein, Devorah Brooks and Harriett Miller. We will start holding meetings in March to plan the calendar for next year. Current facilitators can expect a call soon to assess interest in continuing their classes for another year. If you have ideas for a new class, or resurrecting an old one, please share your ideas with Leslie at 433-6366 or [email protected] or join us at a meeting. The first one is scheduled for Friday, March 16 at 10:00 am at the home of Diane Burkom, 7213 Denberg Road. All BNC members are welcome!

A Word From the Editor The next issue of the BNC Bulletin will come out over the summer. Until then, stay warm and healthy!
