Dear MemberI am wri ti ng to you aft er a gap of more t han a year. During this period, Dr. Ashok Kothari , Hon. Secret ary used to w rit e to you inhis inimit able st yle. Dr. Kothari has complet ed thr ee consecutive t erms as member of t he Executive Comm it tee, now named t heGoverning Council, so he could not continue. I am sure you will r e-elect hi m aft er t his period is over in the next el ecti on of t heCouncilDr. Kothari is an extremely f riendly and aff able person, always thinking about t he welf are of your Society. His cont ribut ion t o t heLibrary thr ough t he sale of his four books, t he latest being Wil dli f e of t he Himalayas and t he Terai Region , is imm ense. He andDr B. F. Chhapgar m ake a perf ect t eam, spending long hours in our Library, going through old books, art icles, manuscripts, lit hographs and painti ngs, and churning out a new edi t ed book every three or f our years. His own bookA Celebrat ion of Indian Trees is a pleasure t o read. I am sure m any of you have read his books. For mem bers who do not know him w ell, Dr. Kothari i s amedical doct or by prof ession, but his clinic i n Mumbais suburb Santa Cruz, is equally known f or it s t rees and for m edical t reat ment .

He is a popular doct or of his area. All pat ient s get a f riendly d ose of advice on t he value of t rees. Anyone showing t he slight estint erest in Nature gets a free sapling. As I wri te thi s let t er, Dr Kothari i s enj oying a well-deserved holiday in t he USA where hisdaughter is set t led. He told m e that he is going t o visit many parks in t he USA. I am sure he wi ll not st op his campaign for a greenerplanet even in the USA. I hope t he haughty Americans wil l t ake his advice in t he proper spirit .I am happy to i nform you that Mr. Isaac Kehimkar has almost recovered aft er his tr agic car accident, one and half years ago. Hehas st opped using walking aids but wil l t ake some more mont hs to start using Mumbais famous local t rains to commut e. Even fora normal healthy person, commut ing in an over-crowded t rain is a night mare wher e you see the fi nest exampl e of the dict umsurvival of t he f i t test . The day Isaac start s commuting by t rain I wil l considered him f ul ly f i t .Despit e his grave injur y and bed rest f or a couple of mont hs, Isaac was all t he ti me in cont act w it h his t hree young st aff whoarranged numerous field t rips for members. Once proper arrangements and cost ing have been done, we w ill informyou.I consider t hese fiel d tr ips as natur e education t ours where w e impart knowledge t o member s and also learn from experiencedmember s. Learning and sharing experience is a t wo-w ay process. We are not a t our agency and our staf f should be tr eated w it hrespect. However, const ruct ive suggest ions for i mproving BNHS nature t rips are alw ays welcom e.I am happy to inform you that one of our mem bers based at Nagpur has donated t o us thr ee extr emely valuable books. We wil l wr it emore about the books in the next issue ofHornbill .The House Sparr ow or chidya/ chir ya is a small passerine, commensal to humans. We have to thank this dainty little bird foraccepting us as a part of i t s daily l if e. Many even nest or used to nest inside human habit ations. It s purported decline has raisedquestions in th e Indian Parli ament , so the Ministr y of Environm ent and Forest s asked BNHS t o st udy t he reasons for it s decli ne. Inorder t o involve large numbers of member s and general public, we have st art ed an online dat a entry programm e called Cit izenSparr ow (www.citizensparrow.in). This online programme is only for t wo mont hs as we have limi t ed funds and would li ke to analyze

the gather ed data at t he earliest. It was st art ed on 1 April. Our Membership Officer Ms Sonu Bellani has contact ed you to f ill ininfor mat ion about t he House Sparrow. I again appeal to you t o parti cipate i n thi s online programm e. We have appointed a verytalent ed young man, Mr. K. Karthik, who wi ll analyze the data. We will put up t he results on our websit e, once he has analyzed thedata. The idea of gat hering online i nfor mat ion about House Sparrow was given t o me by Dr. Koust ubh Sharma, a for mer st udent of BNHS.The programm e was developed by Narayan Raman, a soft ware engineer and a very keen bird wat cher, under t he supervi sion of DrSuhel Qader of Natur e Conservat ion Foundat ion (NCF), Mysore. It i s run b y BNHS, MoEF, NCF and Nati onal Cent re f or BiologicalSciences, wit h a large number of knowledge partners.I will end thi s let t er wi t h my regular appeal to you t o enroll your f riends and relat ives as BNHS member. We need more member sspread all over India. As the clich goes, str ength is in numbers. Your Societ y cannot f ight conservation bat t les wit hout b eingst rong. In a populat ion of 1. 2 bill ion, l ess t han five t housand member s of our 128 years old Societ y is not an impr essive fi gure. Onlyyou can change this.Best wi shes
