Why Business Objects ????
The advantages are: Little or no dependence on Information Systemsdepartment to produce reports.
Steep learning curve - faster learning. Extremely user-friendly interface. The data is secure and the system is easy to
maintain.

A universe is a semantic layer that maps the datastructure found in databases (tables, columns, etc)to business terms.
A universe can represent any specific businessarea, process, or department. For example, auniverse can relate to a department in a company
such as marketing or accounting.

A class is a logical grouping of objects within auniverse. In general, the name of a class reflects a
business concept that conveys the category or typeof objects.
A class can be further divided into subclasses.A designer defines hierarchies of classes andsubclasses into a model that best reflects the
business concepts of the company.

Create a report with Customer, Service Line and Revenue.
Insert a new column to the right of revenue column.
Add Sales tax as a computed value to this column. (Sales tax =8% of revenue)
For the same report, create a variable called Sales Tax and add acolumn to the right of revenue.
Create an alerter to shade the cell in GREY with RED fontwherever the sales tax > 15,000
Use a text alerter to insert text - ³HIGH TAX´ for the samecondition. Do this in the same column as Sales tax and also in anadditional column.

Hierarchies
Objects in a B usinessObjects universe are grouped infolders and organized in a specific (hierarchical) order.
The Island Resorts M arketing universe uses thefollowing hierarchies:
± Resort (Country, Resort, Service Line, Service) ± Sales (Year, Quarter, M onth, Week, Invoice Date)
± Customer (Country of Origin, Region, City, Customer)
± Reservations (Year, Quarter, M onth, Week, Date)

Sometimes the default order of existing hierarchies isnot right for your analysis or you need to drill on ahierarchy that has objects from different classes.
User-defined hierarchies let you create your ownhierarchies using any dimensions available in thedocument.

A template is a special kind of B usiness Objectsdocument that contains pre-defined styles andstructure.
