TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION UPDATE

Protecting our networks and systems from external threats isn’t just a good idea, it’s the law. We are required to secure student

and employee data. Over the coming weeks, District Information Services is implementing two-factor authentication as an extra

layer of security to protect that important information.

Next week, all employees and students will be required to register a personal email address when logging in to most Coast

Colleges systems. In addition to being an optional communications channel for automated password resets, this email account

will be the initial communications channel for the second factor “code” when two-factor authentication is implemented. Users

may defer registering a personal e-mail account up to five times and still be able to log in. After five deferrals, users will not be

allowed to log in without registering a personal e-mail. Currently about 75% of active employees and 50% of active students

have already registered a personal e-mail and will not need to take any action at this time.

After two-factor authentication is enabled and the user successfully logs in receiving the second factor “code” via personal

e-mail, users will have the option of changing their second factor authentication mechanism to:

Duo smartphone application – district cost/provided

Google Authenticator smartphone application – free

SMS Text Message – generally included in your mobile phone plan

Yubikey Security Token – user bears cost

Personal e-mail – free

Students will not be able to choose Duo. Instructions on how to select choices listed above, and Frequently Asked Questions,

can be found here.

Remember, two-factor authentication will only be required when accessing most Coast Colleges systems from outside the

district network.

IN MEMORIAM This week, two long-time Golden West College employees passed away. Christopher L. Hamilton had been a mainstay at Golden West College for 43 years. He has served as a full-time faculty member and professor of business since 1976. A longtime member of the Coast Federation of Educators, Chris was one of the vice presidents for the union where he was a member of the negotiations team. John Tornow had been a valued employee of Golden West College for 30 years. In 1989, John began as a Bookstore Assistant Manager and over the years, worked his way into the role of Information Services Supervisor—providing necessary campus support to students and faculty during our evening operations. They will be missed.

OCC PLANETARIUM OFFICIALLY OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE PUBLIC

On March 22, Orange Coast College welcomed employees, donors and community supporters to witness the dedication of the College’s new Planetarium. More than 300 people gathered on the patio of the Planetarium’s main entrance to watch the ribbon-cutting and hear speeches from College and District leaders, including Interim President Kevin Ballinger, Board President Dr. Lorraine Prinsky, and Associated Students of OCC President Jesse Lopez. Former OCC President Dr. Dennis Harkins was on hand for the celebration, as well as retired English professor and major donor Mary McChesney, whose $1 million gift funded the Planetarium’s Foucault Pendulum.

Foundation Board members David Cline and Mary Lynn Bergman-Rallis were surprised with the unveiling of their OCC Planetarium namesakes — the Barbara and David Cline Science-on-a-Sphere exhibit, and the John and Mary-Lynn Bergman-Rallis Theatre. McChesney was also presented with her special Planetarium namesake – the Foucault Pendulum that her generous gift made possible. McChesney was asked to speak during the dedication ceremony, and her words rang true throughout the evening, “with this planetarium we are all saying hello to the optimistic future we hope for.”

Above: After the ribbon-cutting, guests were invited to stay for a show, explore the Planetarium’s many exhibits and mingle with one another.

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE HAT DAY AT ANGEL STADIUM TOMORROW

Orange Coast College Pirates will descend on Angels Stadium of Anaheim for “OCC Day” tomorrow, Saturday, April 6 as the Angels take on the Texas Rangers. Last year, actors and OCC Alumni of the Year Adam Devine and Blake Anderson threw out the first pitch at OCC Night at Angel Stadium. In addition to employees of the College, Coast alumni and community supporters are invited to show their “Pirate Pride” at this year’s game by attending and wearing their customized hats.

Did you know that The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the United States, serving more than 2.1 million students? As a point of reference, the CSU and UC systems combined only total around 800,000 students. Moreover, one in 10 community college students nationally are educated in California. April is Community College Month across the country and it’s easy to see that community colleges play an important role in the postsecondary education system. Ask around, and you’ll find everyone here has a story about why they chose to work at a community college. Mine is straightforward—I’m proud to work within a system that provides students with a high-quality education that motivates them to excel, and equips them with the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in work and life. Community colleges offer everyone access to an excellent, affordable education without

admission requirements. We open doors for students from different socioeconomic backgrounds—and to those who might not otherwise be able to attend college. American community colleges are recognized across the globe as being a vibrant sector of postsecondary education. In the United States, people look to California for leadership, and in California, people look to Coast. If you have a Coast success story you’d like to share, email [email protected] for a chance to be featured in an upcoming news brief.

Have a great weekend,

John Weispfenning, Ph. D. Chancellor
