WOMEN'S CLUB Linda Hendzel, 681-2174

Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Happy Easter to everyone. The 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration was held on February 28th. A big THANK YOU to the Committee who worked so hard on making this dinner a success. Also, congratulations to all the honorees who celebrated this big event.

The Women’s Club has been asked for donations for different projects in Alameda Isles. A donation was given to the Library of $100 for the purchase of some Westerns. This was also donated in the past and the books were purchased. However, the books have disappeared. Please remember to return the books after you have read them. Another donation was given of $1500 to help with the completion of the redecorating of the Lounge. A thank you to the Committee. The Lounge is beautiful. A $2000 donation has been given to the Clubhouse Committee. This money is to be set aside in hopes that someday we can get some storage in the back of the room, since storage is at a limit in Alameda Isles.

We received a thank you letter from Helping Hand thanking the Women’s Club for their donation and also thanking us for all the items that were donated. The individuals and families who receive good quality food and essential hygiene items from Englewood Helping Hand are deeply grateful. Our next meeting will be on March 14th. Remember to bring a donation to Helping Hand.

As a Seasonal Resident of Alameda Isles have I considered: A home watcher? To check the A/C, humidistat, pest control, water and appliances are

working at all times. And to notify you when your exterior or roof need cleaning or maintenance. A yard maintenance person? To keep my lot weeded, the gutters cleared out, bushes and

trees maintained. How old are my appliances and have they been properly maintained prior to our absence? Do I need to paint any part of my house or trim? Or repair any screens? Leaving the interior doors of my home open to maximize airflow (including closet doors)?

TIPS ON A/C & Humidistat Settings

What are the best A/C settings for snowbirds?

By Craig Muccio, FPL

Question: I have my thermostat/humidistat set to 80/60 while away up north. I watch my usage via my energy dashboard, but wondered if these are the best settings to save energy and prevent issues?

There are definitely ideal settings that can help you maximize your savings while you’re away from your winter home in Florida, while preventing moisture and other issues in your home. You’re off to a good start!

The right setting for manual thermostats Our research found that setting a manual thermostat to 80 degrees for homes and 77 for condos typically provides enough dehumidification to prevent mold. Since you also have a humidistat to control humidity, you have the flexibility to set the temperature higher at 88 degrees, while setting your humidistat’s relative humidity, or RH, to 58 percent. This will help you save even more energy while still keeping the indoor humidity in a safe range.

Increased control with programmable thermostats For customers with programmable thermostats without humidity control (without a built-in humidistat), FPL recommends programming thermostats at 72 degrees for just two hours each morning before sunrise and at 88 degrees the rest of the time. This will prevent mold by removing moisture from the air during the cooler hours when RH is highest and your A/C runs most efficiently.

Even more efficiency and mold prevention The most energy-efficient way to help prevent mold from developing in vacant homes is to use stand-alone dehumidifiers. Use one dehumidifier for every 1,000 square feet and set the controls to 58 percent RH. Locate them by a sink or shower so water from the drainage tube can go down the drain.

Other tips for your home As an additional precaution, we recommend having your A/C ductwork checked for leaks by requesting an FPL duct test. Check for air leaks around doors and windows, too. Both are good ways to minimize the amount of moisture getting into your home.

We highly recommend that customers log into their online account to view their own personal Energy Dashboard, especially while they are away, to watch for any unusual changes in energy usage which could indicate an equipment malfunction.

Visit www.FPL.com/seasonal for more energy-saving tips while away from your home.

Thank you and please stay safe.

BOAT CLUB

Ken Vanderberg---Commodore

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2 at 7 pm in the Assembly Hall. There will be two very special presentations at this meeting. First, we will be traveling to the beautiful country of Norway to visit a small shipyard that specializes in refurbishing old historic vessels, mainly for the Norwegian government. Enjoy seeing pictures of the shipyard, wood-shop, etc. and hear first-hand about this operation, from its owner, Knute.

As a club, we will be considering the building of one or two small wooden vessels next winter. This would allow our members to get first-hand experience in building a cedar strip canoe or a small rowing dingy, or both. Paul Vanderberg, who has built several wooden boats, will be sharing with us his knowledge and experience. Paul has offered to donate the wood materials, plans, and molds needed to build a canoe or dingy. This would be a great Boat Club project.

Thanks to Christine Cortese for organizing our February luncheon at the Fishery Restaurant. It was a great success with over sixty-five people in attendance.

Our Boat Club annual Harbor Picnic is scheduled for Thursday, March 17, at 4:00 pm at our Harbor. This very popular event is free to all boat club members; non-members will be charged $10 per person at the door. Our menu will feature the popular grilled Philly cheese steak hoagies, desert, snacks, and unlimited beverages. A sign-up sheet is available in the Boat Club bulletin board.

The new Boat Club officers for the next season are: Bob Steen---Commodore & Dan Harrick—Vice-Commodore

TRAVELOGUE SERIES Ken and Barb Vanderberg

We will be having two very interesting travelogues during the month of March.

Saturday, March 5TH at 7 p.m. in the Assembly Hall, we will traveling with Rick Bateman and his son Rick to the beautiful country of PANAMA. This trip focused on the beautiful and colorful birds of this tropical country. They explored the jungle lands near the canal as well as the rain cloud forests in the mountains. See the many exotic birds they were able to “capture” on film. We will then travel with Joey and Rick (and Father) to

the beautiful national parks and canyons in Southwest Utah. See close up ZION AND BRYCE PARKS in the winter time.

Sunday, March 13TH at 7:00 pm in the Assembly Hall we will be traveling with Jan and Harold Gelderloos to the beautiful NORTHWEST REGION of the good old USA. Follow with them as they take us to Seattle, Olympic National Park, the coastlines of the Pacific Ocean, the Redwoods of N. California, Crater Lake, the Columbia River Gorge and onto Portland. This special two week trip captures the September beauty of the region. Please bring some treats for our Travelogue Treat Table

VETERANS CLUB Neil Buchanan, Commander

The last meeting of the Veterans Club was held on February 2nd. The meeting was very well attended. We will have a guest at the next meeting on March 1st. Tyler Pachtler will come back to share his experiences on his trip to Washington DC. In one of our meetings in 2014 we elected to give Tyler a donation for his trip to Washington DC. At that time Tyler was in the young Marines program at Venice Middle School. He was unable to meet with us last year, so he will come and share his experiences with us at our March meeting. We have a new date for the trip to McGill Air Force Base! We will be there the day before their big airshow! Spaces available through Bob Soucy for Friday, March 18th.

The Veterans Club has purchased two benches for the shuffleboard courts. They are similar to the benches at Pine Park.

Mark your calendar for March 8th, the College Snowbird classic, Michigan State U vs Illinois State U. We will meet at the clubhouse at 9:15 a.m. and leave for the ballfield in Charlotte at 9:30. I hope we will have many of our veterans at this event.

The artists and crafters from our park will be exhibiting in the Assembly Hall. Again they will be doing a Chinese Auction featuring items donated by each of the exhibitors. If you need tables for a party, please return them by 6:00 pm on Saturday or use the card tables located in the back corner of the Assembly Room. We will greatly appreciate your help.
