The VARK MODEL

Visual Auditory Reading/Writing Kinesthetic

Spatial learners learn best by

seeing

Aural learners learn best by

hearing

Learn best by reading and

writing

Physical Learners learn best by moving and

doing. What does this look like in practice?

• Highlighting notes

• Using charts or tables

• Remembering a picture

• Maps • Outlines • Diagrams • Patterns

When note taking you may prefer to organise notes into visual patterns such as shapes, colours or spaces on your page that you can remember in a test.

• Talking to yourself

• Listening carefully

• Contribute to discussions

• Audio books • Audio notes

When note taking you may find making a speech or speaking into the laptop to record notes. You may prefer to ask yourself questions out loud.

• Reading and writing

• Verbal input can be difficult

• Often need to read it, then write it and then read it again to see if understood.

• Learn best by books, writing lists, journal use, flash cards, adding notes to any picture or diagram.

• Note taking skills are important

• Learning best by going through the motions of something.

• Acting out what they have learnt

• Watching and seeing firsthand.

• Active breaks are often required.

• Use physical props to help remember information.

Visual learners are better to have less clutter around them when learning. How much clutter is in your room and on your desk?

Auditory learners like to have discussions and can benefit from collaborative learning and structured debates.

Reading and writing learners often like to choose a physical book or notepad over a digital book or an audio book. To process auditory learning from the classroom, that is, a teacher talking to you, you will need to write it down. A think, pair, share can be a helpful strategy.

Taking an active break in your room can be helpful.

ACTIVITY FIVE – Distractions

List your distractions in the left-hand column and then consider how you can remove or minimise the distraction.

When planning your learning journey, you not only need to know what the best road for you is (learning styles), you also need to prepare for the trip and plan for any bumps along the way (distractions).

ACTIVITY SIX – HELP? Do you need help but never or only sometimes ask for it? Discuss reasons as to why this might be the case. Where can you get help? List all the ways you know you can get help during and outside of set study time J

Ways I have found help…
