Boat Club News Perrysburg Boat Club July/August, 2016 Commodore’s Line - Steve Wise HOT SUMMER FUN! Summer is now in full swing, as even your Commodore was able to get his boat in the water after missing out completely last year! It’s a HOT, HOT summer at PBC, not only with the soaring temperatures, but with many fantastic opportunities for our members and fellow AYC/ILYA friends to enjoy our Club! The Pancake Breakfast/Boat Inspections were a success, along with the July Fireworks/Ice Cream Social. Thanks to all who organized and participated in these fine PBC traditions! This year’s Riverfest Regatta was one of the biggest success stories yet! We had an amazing turnout for the Friday Wine- Tasting event, followed by a great Regatta where we had a fantastic turnout of AYC Commodores and their Ladies/Gents at our Commodore’s Reception. Our week -long Boat Camp with the ODNR Classes was a big hit with the youth. Special thanks to PC/VC Dave Dicke and RC Rob Brunner for spearheading these outstanding events! We batted 3 for 3 on our variance requests at the last Perrysburg Board of Zoning Appeals related to the front yard setback on the South property (non-river side) and for parking relief on both parcels of land on each side of Water Street. The only remaining issue to be resolved is to appeal to City Council on Tuesday, August 9 th to overturn the previous rejection of our front yard setback request on the North parcel (river side). It would be great to get a packed house at the City Council Chamber for that meeting! Have fun this summer, stay cool, and continue to be safe out there on the water. City Council Special Hearing Monday August 9 at 5:30PM is a special council mee=ng to hear our appeal for Council to overturn a Board of Zoning denial of our front setback variance request. We will need a 2/3 majority vote to accomplish this. It is impera=ve that we get a good turnout there to show support for the new clubhouse building. The specified front setback is fiOy (50) feet. We are asking them to allow us to reduce it to three (3) feet. The old building was out in the middle of Water St (or the right of way) and on the east side of the deck. We are proposing moving it off Water St by three (3) feet and reloca=ng it to the west side of the deck. Moving our building the required fiOy (50) feet would put the front door out in the river.

HOT SUMMER FUN!Summer is now in full swing, as even your Commodore was able to get his boat in the water after missing out completely last year!

We had an amazing turnout for the Friday Wine-Tasting event, followed by a great Regatta where we had a fantastic turnout of AYC Commodores and their Ladies/Gents at our Commodore’s Reception. Vice Commodore - P/C Dave Dicke

Thanks to all for the great PBC Boat Camp week. There are so many folks that helped make the week a success for the youth that attended. • P/C Mike Bureau and Carl Swanson were our sailing instructors• Sue Reider, Rachael Wesley and Brent Sandberg worked the kayak and canoes, • Emily Conley and Diann Toffler were our “dock moms” • P/C Jerry Abair was my back up runner and boat rescue agent• Sandbergs, Voltzs, Geisslers, Wellsteins, Josh Seney all pitched in too.• Michael Toffler provided a jet ski for rides• PBC and Phil Baron for the use of their pontoon boats to ferry us to the island and as

safety boats• Gordy Oliver for helping me in so many ways to get set up

Organizations to thank: • R/C Rob Brunner and his company, Thrivent Financial for the financial support• ODNR for putting on the Safe Boating course• The National Great Lakes Museum for their tours• The United States Coast Guard for the great tour• Fort Meigs and past PBC member Dan Woodward, Museum Curator, for a great tour• The Good Samaritans that rescued our canoes and kayaks that drifted downriver when

the water rose and carried a few away• Toledo Metro Park Staff that hosted our tour of Ewing Island.

Sorry if I missed anyone, so many folks pitched in. The photos tell the story of fun, learning and fellowship. Let’s make it even better next year! V/C Dave Dicke.

PBC will hold its Annual Down River Cruise 8-14-16.  The plan is for a BYOB and snack to pass cocktail social time on the bulkhead starting at 6:00. We will leave the docks at 6:30 and arrive at Maumee River Yacht Club for dinner (off their menu) at 7:00. We will return to the PBC docks around 9:30 and have a bonfire. We need a count of who plans to attend by 8-10-16 the Pot Luck Night, MRYC needs a count to have staff available.                    Please pre-register with me at [email protected] and note if you are willing to be a boat captain and how many folks you can accommodate. No fees will be collected. You pay for your meal and drinks at MRYC cash or credit cards. A donation to your captain for fuel would be appreciated.

“Thanks to all for a successful Ice Cream Social and Regatta Weekend! It takes a Club like ours, all pulling together, to have so much FUN!” - Steve, Dave and Rob

LIFE JACKETS

PBC rules state that all children under 10 years old must wear a life jacket on the bulkhead and docks at all times as soon as they walk through the gate on the bulkhead. During the July 3rd fireworks numerous children under 10 were not wearing life jackets. Several of their parents were approached about not wearing life jackets and they said that they were not aware of the rule. Obviously they were guests of our members. Please advise guests with children under 10 they must have a life jacket for their children. A good practice for members whose guests include children under 10 should include keeping extra child size vests aboard.

Now that the dust has settled, it’s starting to sink in for me that we did something really great! It took a lot of hard work from a lot of people to make it all come together. We had amazing exposure for the Club as well. Our Facebook marketing reached 192,861 people for the month and there were 24,682 interactions with those posts.

We had press releases in the Perrysburg Messenger Journal as well as the Toledo Blade. In my history of doing events in the City of Perrysburg I have rarely reached such a high marketing exposure. It was very positive for the Club!

For the wine tasting we were able to sell 309 tickets and had an attendance close to 400 with the sponsor guests and volunteers! It looks like we will have raised close to $9,000 for the weekend!

Thank you all for the hard work it took to make this happen. Thanks also to all the event sponsors that donated time and money to make the weekend spectacular!
