Most of you know About Time pretty well by now as this is her 11 th cruise so I will give an update on what has happened in the last year. In fact it was another excellent year for About Time and crew; she really is an evergreen yacht. I guess when you combine Bruce Farr design and one of the world’s best custom boat builders, Cookson, you should expect some magic! This season we managed to win the CYCA Ocean pointscore on both IRC and PHS. This is the 2 nd time we have won both in the same season and the 4 th time we have won on IRC. Coffs is a favourite of ours and we were defending champion but an uphill race in heavy weather and broken jib car put pay to us retaining the crown. On board we will have our regulars including; my daughters Grace (12) and Sarah (9), long suffering crew and top mainsheet hand/co-helm Max Poyser, Sam “Thruster” (don’t ask) Yates, country boy and cellar master Tim Dalla with son Jack (15) and friend and last but by no means least my quietly spoken and tea totalling sister Sue Metz (everyone lock up your Scotch). The regular Cruise Doctor Angus Gray will not be with us so there goes our supply of gratuitous booze from grateful patients! He promises to return in 2013. As far as kids are concerned there is strength in numbers so we are very open to any play dates with youngsters of similar age. Looking forward to a great week and meeting plenty of new friends and old. Julian Farren-Price

REMARKS: Having joined my brother (Arthur) in last year's cruise we had to come back with our new AFR Midnight Rambler. As a kid I had the time of my life in early Squadron Cruises in the 70s on my father's yacht, Meltemi. So now very happy to return on my own yacht. I can still recall this 45 foot yacht being pulled over on her side by a big motor cruiser and motoring into Lake Macquarie at a 45degree heal , sliding past wharves that seemed only feet away with halyards straining to breaking point. While the lake was a special part of the cruise back then, I am fine with avoiding that sort caper on my current boat! With me will be my two co owners, Bob Thomas and Michael Bencsik along with their partners Jos and Tink. I hope my partner Sue will be joining us...rumour is she may make an appearance on the Basin lay day. Michael (Mix) will have his three young children along for a few days over the week and I am hoping my two sons, Ben and Matt (15 and 16) will be there for the last few days of the week. Both sailed back from this year's Sydney to Hobart with me so are now "seasoned offshore sailors". I am too old to do the bow these days so am working hard on them! The boat is a flat out racer with nothing down below , but we are going to great lengths to transform her into cruising mode for the week. Competitors will be surprised to see the comforts we have come up with. Other crew will be various longer term AFRMR types with plenty of Sydney Hobart experience but new to the rigours of partying then racing, day after day in beautiful Broken Bay/ Pittwater. In terms of form, the new boat is starting to hit her straps, placing first overall in both the CYCA Short Ocean Point score and Autumn Ocean Point score series, against top class competition in both cases. But please don't hit us too hard on handicap! We all look forward to a fantastic week of social sailing and cruising.

REMARKS: Since last year’s pilgrimage to Pittwater, Allegro has undergone “cruisification” to a full on cruiser with solar panels, davits, bimni and dodger not to mention the water maker and Atomic espresso maker for our recent sail around Australia. So with all this extra gear aboard we’ve decided not to race this year, but instead critique some of the luncheon venues around Broken Bay and would welcome any likeminded seafarers to join us. Needless to say, participation in the Squaddie cruise is part of the Allegro sailing fixtures and as usual, we look forward to catching up with everyone over a drink or two. The photo is Allegro tied up at Sir Johns Falls Landing in the Gordon River, Tasmania -one of our favorite spots.

AS YOU DO returns for the 2012 cruise sporting (hopefully) its new Leisurefurl boom in addition to its Hoyt (self-tacking) boom to make life even easier for its crew.

AS YOU Do races with our local club Sydney Amateurs and competes in the Friday Twilights, and the Sunday and Winter series. In addition, the boat spends time sailing around the harbour “off peak” or coastal cruising back and forth to Pittwater especially in the winter months. REMARKS: Can Can is a Beneteau First 34.7 built in 2006. She is the first design that combined efforts of Farr Yacht Design and Beneteau in collaborating on a boat which addressed performance under IRC as its primary target. Whilst fitted with a carbon mast and a torpedo keel, relative speed was the first consideration. However, she is reasonably comfortable down below and has a large cockpit, ideally suited to entertaining in our climate. As this is our first cruise, both Trish and I look forward to enjoying the company and the Cruise. Roman Tarnawsky

Dehler is was acquired by Hanse Group during the GFC in May 09 when Dehler quality build could not compete with more mass produced boats brands like Beneteau, Hanse and Bavaria. For those interested, the Dehler 35 was designed by Simonis Voogd Design in conjunction with Judel/Vrolijk - both teams are hugely experienced in designing performance yachts. We purchased Coco just in time for the commencement of the Friday twilight season and loved every minute of racing. We will balance crew transfers all week together with our ex youth sailing children (and partners) aged between 19 and 24, who will come and go depending upon social and university engagements. REMARKS: Freya is a Hanse 411, a very strong comfortable cruiser-racer designed by the well-known Dutch firm design Judel-Vrolijk. Freya was launched in 2004, purchased by the current partnership in 2006 and since then has done three Pittwater-Coffs Harbour races, all five squadron cruises and many squadron Friday evening twilights and the Edwards/RANSA Wednesday afternoon races with reasonable racing success. Freya’s displacement of 9 ½ tonnes, is a significant handicap in light airs but once the breeze is 10-12 knots she goes to windward very well, and downwind under her 130m2 kite is quite exciting with a top speed achieved to date of 17.6 knots surfing in 30 knots of breeze in the 2011 Pittwater-Coffs Harbour race. I am sure neither Hanse nor Judel-Vrolijk ever imagined a Hanse 411 would be capable of such speed! Regarding the origin of the name Freya; Freya is the Scandinavian goddess of love and fertility and the original owners, a couple in their late thirties had previously had no success in having children and purchased a comfortable cruising yacht to enjoy their life together. Shortly thereafter they had one child and then another and the boat became “surplus to requirements”. Anyway the current partnership sensibly decided to keep the name but fortunately the magic of Freya has not worked for us older gentlemen!

She was designed by Duthie Lidgard with considerable input from the builder, Thomas Borrmann and the owners. Although designed as a short-handed offshore cruiser, she has been raced offshore with some success in her earlier career. Now semi-retired like her owners, she can occasionally be persuaded to hurry, but due to the design of her rig, she prefers stronger breezes to perform best. This year’s theme sees the return of some old faithfuls such as the Loves (Mel Angus plus Milly, Genevieve and Eloise) and the Lanz’s (Ian Diane and Catherine and Hanna) Added to the mix will be the return of the Bencsiks who are flying in from London as the imported yachting “heavies (Mix, Annabel and Matt Sam and Sophie.)

This year we have recruited a coach boat for tactics and training skippered by Andrew and Jackie Cockrane on Pendragon. This will enable some of our crew to relax during the day on board Pendragon as the support vessel - a sort of rotation system so we can keep the young crew fresh and motivated. REMARKS: Magnificat was delivered in October 1995 from the Catalina factory in Woodland Hills California to NSW Maritime survey requirements and is hull number 1539 of this long line of successful cruisers in the Catalina range. It was one of the first Mk II versions of the popular 36 footer which has several large racing and cruising fleets. So when the factory decided to introduce the MK II with more beam at deck and wider transom, it also maintained the underwater shape of the original design so as not to disadvantage the owners who raced in those fleets. Robbie and John have sailed her extensively including a six month passage to the Whitsundays and return in 2000. Magnificat is a regular participant in the Friday twilight series. This will be our tenth cruise with the Squadron and the first time that we have had to rotate crew during the cruise. Our regular stalwarts Graham (“Sprinkles”) Fountain and Grace Long will be with us again but only for the first half and Robbie will be on board for two days with our grand-daughter Adelaide on her second cruise. Richard Orr who sails regularly with Lahaina II and Enigma will be on board for the whole cruise and we will have John Lo Schiavo for two days at the end. So there will be a logistics problem which we have not had to deal with in the past. We look forward to renewing old acquaintances and to making new friends. Rapunzel has recently experienced a minor change in ownership. John Hearne, who had owned the boat since 1987, and joined in partnership with Richard and Sandy Lawson in 2000, has sold his share to the Lawsons. John is now the proud owner, along with his family; of a 36ft power boat "Santorini" [sorry if the spelling is wrong]

This is Rapunzel's 7th cruise and for our crew each year gets better as we get into the swing of things, rafting up with various different boats, meeting and getting to know new and interesting people.

This year will be particularly interesting after Sandy's and my experience with the volunteer group at the Etchells World Champs. This experience has allowed us the opportunity to get to know a number of people from within the club who we did not know very well. This has been a common theme for so many of those people and we look forward to furthering those relationships on the cruise this year.

A little about Rapunzel herself .......... next year she will celebrate 30x years of providing great joy to so many who have salad with her. She was built for Ron Powell, by Ken Beashel, at Elvina Bay, Pittwater. The design is by Doug Petersen during the 1970s as a shorthanded cruiser/racer, whatever that means. In 1987 John Hearne became the custodian until just before the Sydney Olympics when the Lawsons joined in partnership with John.

Apart from the cruise, Rapunzel is a regular competitor in both Ladies Twilight Series and the Friday Twilight series, having just completed her 11th season of Friday nights. As usual we will crew the boat with many different friends throughout the week.

In Cowes that year Australia was in a winning position as the Fastnet Race unfolded only to have Koomooloo lose her rudder.

Australia finished third overall with Salacia II being 4th highest scoring boat.

After this Salacia II was retired to Wednesday racing.

After acquiring Salacia II in 2004 we have been fortunate to have Cec Quilkey undertake the restoration of the yacht. We use her as a family yacht for cruising and holidays.

REMARKS: After nine happy years with our previous Bavaria 34 we decided to buy a boat of similar length but with a racing configuration. In consequence the new Senta is a Beneteau First 35, a Farr design which is a smaller version of the successful Beneteau First 40.

Delivered from France in August 2011 we have been learning how to sail a boat with a large main and non-overlapping headsail.

There are four other First 35s on Sydney Harbour and two others on the Cruise, alouette and One More No More.

Senta races Ladies Twilights, Friday Twilights and Division 2 on Saturdays and we also spend our weekends aboard so she gets plenty of use.

REMARKS: SOLVEIG II is a new Xp-38 from X-Yachts of Denmark. This new range of cruiser-racers is built with customary Scandinavian quality & attention to detail. SOLVEIG II is the first Xp-38 in Australia ( there is a new Xp-44 on Pittwater and some on order for delivery later this year). SOLVEIG II was only commissioned in March and we are still attending to all the small details associated with getting a new boat organised. With only a few races under our belt, we are still learning the characteristics of the new boat, but are very pleased so far with the ease of handling and quality of sailing pleasure. As in previous cruises with our previous X-Yacht ( a 37 ' of the former design model ), we will be crewed by a rotating crew of family and friends, including one who has travelled from New York to participate in the Sesqui-Centenary Cruise. We look forward to enjoying the racing, and more importantly, the conviviality of joining friends old & new in the post-race enjoyment. David McLean

REMARKS:

Southern Cross is a Scott Jutson 45’ designed for two immature couples for cruising with our friends, Mike & Annie Clifton, who introduced us to ocean racing in the 1960’s. Southern Cross was built by Maconaghy Boats in Mona Vale in November 1998.

Our first Squadron Cruise was on the Clifton’s Swanson 36 “Rush” to Lake Macquarie with our young families.

Our first Southern Cross was a Farr 37 built in 1983 (2nd Hobart overall 1986), followed by a beautiful timber Cole 46 ‘Pianola’ which we renamed ‘Le Croix de Sud’. Then came another ‘Southern Cross’ Farr 40 (2nd Hobart overall 1998) built by Ian Franklin (Christchurch) in 1988.

We still have some of our original Hobart crew sailing with us—David Adams, Lach & Stuart Gilbert, Peter Sheldrick, Donald Swanson & Bobby Wilmot.

The Southern Cross team would like to thank the Squadron Committee and cruise staff for making the annual cruise such a successful, enjoyable event and looking forward to many more.

REMARKS: “Starlight” is a Bavaria 35 Match, launched in 2004. The 35 Match series was designed by Doug Petersen of the USA as a cruiser/club racer and built by Bavaria Yachts in Germany. About 200 were built and have proved quite popular in Sweden and Norway where regular class racing takes place. About ten were brought to Australia. She is 10.5m LOA and displaces 5.5 tonnes. She has a healthy sail area which makes her a good light weather performer but makes her a handful in heavier winds. “Starlight” is kept on Pittwater where until recently she has been raced regularly. REMARKS:

Ultreya was launched in February 2012. She is a Dehler 41, built in Frankfurt by Dehler who are now owned by the Hanse Group and was imported to Australia by Windcraft . Dehler yachts have been around for some time and there are a number of them at RSYS. Dehler have re-designed their range and have recently introduced 29’,32’,35 ‘yachts with the 35’ and the 41’ the most recent designs introduced. Ultreya is hull # 16 and she is the first Dehler 41 in Australia. Needless to say she is both lightly raced and cruised at this point but has sailed in a no. of Friday twilights and Summer Saturdays and in the Sydney Regatta in March. At a little over 8 tons she is 4 and 1/2 tons lighter, two feet shorter and needless to say considerably faster than Kiterunner the Hanse 430e which I have sailed at the last two Squadron cruises. Ultreya is well laid out for racing with a fine entry, a flat transom, a 2.4 metre draught and a wide open cockpit. She is fast downwind. Competitive upwind and is very comfortable below with 2/3 cabins, large common living area, galley etc. Both Ultreya and her crew of Rod, Ian, Lindsay, Norm, Stuart, Scott, Jo-Anne, Jonathan, Seb, Howard, John, Ric and Tim are work in progress and we are looking forward to spending some quality time on the water both cruising and racing the boat.

REMARKS:

The 2012 Cruise will be about our 13th Cruise – always racing on Southern Cross with Bill and Noela Gilbert with our boat/s being the ‘Bunkhouse’ and ‘Cellar’. The first 9 years was on a 1987 Beneteau First 325 – ‘Laetare’ which was previously owned by RSYS member Warren Welch. This will be the 4th Cruise for Vibe – a 2009 Beneteau Oceanis 37 which we bought new at Easter 2009. She was brought into Australia for the Perth Boat Show before spending five beautiful sunny days ‘Cruising the Nullarbor’ on the back of a truck. We took delivery on the Thursday before Easter and sailed her to Cottage Point the next day in readiness for the 2009 Cruise. Twenty Three ‘well behaved’ RSYS members and friends packed the cockpit for the Official Christening and ‘Fairy Wand’ blessing held during the ’09 Cruise Raftup in Smiths Creek when Vibe was 1 week old. She will once again be the ‘Bunkhouse’ and ‘Cellar’ to Southern Cross for the 2012 Cruise with a good supply of Beer, Wine and Holy Dollar Rum on board. There may even be some tea/coffee somewhere in case of emergency. Vibe is a very comfortable cruising and socialising yacht with a good turn of speed when required and can be regularly seen in many of the secluded bays of the Hawkesbury throughout the year. She is perfectly suited to this week away and will be seen on The Squadron Cruise for many years to come. A big thank you must go to The Squadron and their staff, the Cruise Committee and all the participants for making The Cruise such a fantastic week on the water. Sharron and Graeme Kennedy

REMARKS: Viva was built in 2000 by Tasman Yachts from a plug taken from Irish the Young 41. Viva cruised in Pittwater until we brought her to Sydney Harbour in early 2010. Viva has participated in the last two squadron cruises and has raced with RANSA on Wednesdays and CYCA on Sunday mornings. This summer she did twilights with the CYCA. She was designed for comfortable cruising and fitted out accordingly. As a result she does like a reasonable amount of wind – preferably over 20 knots. So perhaps the weather for the cruise will oblige by blowing the mildew patterns off the sails. Come aboard and we will show you a true deck saloon yacht. Voileste translates loosely as ‘sails nimbly’ but, apparently, the name might also mean ‘sailing into court’. So we will have to be extra careful at the marks. The crew will be various family members and friends and we are all looking forward to it.

REMARKS: The younger Shannon family are again sailing the Squadron cruise after the 6 (almost) consecutive cruises my parents Doug and Gaye Shannon sailed in the 80’s and 90’s. In those early cruises, the 1975 built MOTTLE 33 Wah Moon was one of the larger vessels in the fleet and quite competitive, achieving a tidy collection of wins; The Windsong, Club Captains and Club Treasurers Trophies among them. These days the Wah Moon finds cruising as a Non Racing entry more comfortable, with some of Team Shannon available to do the odd race on other vessels. Concentrating on an easy, social and relaxing cruise, enjoying many other cruisers company worked very well for us in 2011. We look forward to a repeat performance this year. REMARKS: The latest in the Willyama series is a 3 year old Beneteau First 40. Since its acquisition in September 2011, Willyama has competed in its 3rd Sydney-Hobart and the RSYS Spring, Summer, Tuesday and Friday sailing series. Willyama continues to support two separate crews : the Richard Barron/Steve Sanlorenzo team compete in the Spring, Summer and Sydney-Hobart or Pittwater-Coffs series while Trish's team compete in the Winter, Friday and Tuesday Twilight series and, of course, the Cruise. While Eric is the only member of both teams, members from each team fill in when necessary. This new Willyama continues the legacy of being named after the SS Willyama : the first Willyama yacht was one of the life boats from the SS Willyama with a mast added. Adelaide Steamship Company gave their boats Aboriginal names and SS Willyama was named for Broken Hill. It was the first Adelaide Steamship vessel to be specifically built for their Australian trade and those specifications were created by Richard and Trish's great grandfather who was the First Engineer. The SS Willyama broke its drive shaft and ran aground on 13th April, 1907 while carrying a load of coal from Newcastle to Port Pirie. All 27 crew retreated in the life boats. The wreck is, reportedly, a spectacular dive site and lies 400 metres east of Willyama Beach near Marion Bay in South Australia.
