The RenovaTion of The BiRch/STeamBoaT iSland BRidge

In 1933, Steamboat Island was connected to Birch Island on Lake Winnipesaukee by a picturesque bridge.

Nearly eighty years of lake weather took its toll on the storied bridge and in 2009, Don Pangburn of Pangburn & Company took up the task of repairing the bridge.

Steamboat Island, whose name comes from the Steam-boat Belknap when it was wrecked there in a storm in 1841. William and Christine Tucker bought Steamboat Island in 1933 and had the bridge constructed to allow emergency access for Mrs. Tucker’s brother-in-law, a physician, who lived on Birch Island.

In 1960, the Tucker family sold the island to Seth Armen. Seth’s wife, Eloise, operated the Gilford Playhouse for many See BRIDGE on 6

years in the summer. In 2000, new owners bought Steamboat Island.

For the past eight years, Don Pangburn, has been do-ing work on Steamboat Island. Pangburn, who has been a builder/remodeler and general contractor in the Lakes Region for twenty-five years, always had the idea of repairing the bridge.

“The owners and I had talked about repairing the bridge for several years,” said Pangburn. “In 2009 we finally started the process. They were adamant that we restore it to its original condition, using new materials only when it was necessary.”

He first went to find out as much as he could about the history of the bridge.

“It wasn’t on any historical registry and there wasn’t much

regarding its original con-struction,” said Pangburn. “A few historical articles on the bridge claim it was made of a hard wood called Hornbeam. We learned af-ter dismantling the bridge

choice for the new bridge.“White oak had a closed

cell structure which does not allow the penetration of moisture easily,” said Pangburn. He also noted that it was one of the woods used by the famous covered bridge builder and restorer, Milton Graton.

Pangburn worked close-ly with the State to secure the proper permits and to make sure the Shoreline Protection Act guidelines were strictly adhered to.

“Our first order of busi-ness was to dismantle the old bridge,” said Pang-burn. “We took careful measurements of the con-struction, dimensions and design so we could repli-cate it exactly.”

Once they had the bridge dismantled they took their material list and then went to their production facility to make all the parts.

With the framing in place they were ready to start decking the bridge. One of the improvements they incorporated into the new bridge was the use of some modern fastening technology.

“We utilized stainless steel fasteners for all the connections to make sure the bridge would have a long life,” said Pangburn. “In addition, we had care-fully removed all of the old hardware and had the rust removed, repainted and reinstalled it so as to keep the integrity of the original structure intact.”

Among the old hard-ware which was removed were the original iron bolts which were sandblasted and repainted.

now complete, the last item to be installed was the railings.

“The original railings were red oak logs that were cut and bolted to the bridge,” said Pang-burn. “We agreed that a more suitable and readily available material would be to use cedar logs. We have had a lot of experi-ence building Adirondack homes around the lake so we made quick work of fitting all the newels and cross braces.”

To Don Pangburn, the project has special sig-nificance since he is a 3rd generation Island resident on Lake Winnipesaukee.

“This project was very special to me,” said Pang-burn. “It is icing on the cake after having been involved with building and renovation homes on the lake for so many years.”

The current owners of Steamboat Island were more than pleased with the results. Their desire to keep it identical in appear-ance in every dimension was achieved, They have since named it the “Wish-ing Bridge” and know that it will continue to grace Lake Winnipesaukee for generations to come.

Pangburn consulted with Sharps Lumber Company in Holderness, which spe-cializes in unique woods and it was decided that white oak would be the

“The original bridge was comprised of radiused pieces laminated together to form the arches,” said Pangburn. “With the prop-er radius we set forth to make new trusses.”

After a few weeks in the shop, they headed back out to the island to begin construction on the new bridge.

“There were several ar-eas that needed design improvement where the bridge connected to the causeways on either side,” said Pangburn. “Once we made these modifications we began assembling the trusses. The cross braces and the transition framing on either side which allows for the comfortable transi-tion from the radius of the bridge to the island.”

Mickey SpillaneI, The Jury ( 1947)

I got my first taste of Mike Hammer in the Sta-cy Keach TV series back in the 1980’s. Not satis-fied with just the visual I sought the source mate-rial and ended up with a fine collection of luridly covered Mickey Spillane paperbacks from the 40’s and 50’s. I, The Jury is one of the most gruesome. The suspects drop like flies, leaving Hammer sty-mied until he finally fig-ures out the connection, reaches a verdict, and ex-ecutes the sentence.

Otto Penzler says that “noir is about losers,” Bill Pronzini says that “the noir crime story deals with disorder, disaffection, and

dissatisfaction,” and Merriam-Web-ster defines noir as “crime fiction featuring hard-boiled cynical char-acters and bleak sleazy settings.” I say that noir is a good read. The men call the women “dames,” and the dames are often in dishabille.

The dick smokes and drinks and shoots. What could be better for a summer escape than wallowing in a little fictional distress, depravity, and despair? Below, for your sum-mer reading consideration, are nine great noir mysteries, old and new.

Matthew Scudder is an ex-cop, an alcoholic, and an unlicensed pri-vate dick. He gets by in the Big apple investigating trademark infringement – that is, chasing away the fraudulent sellers of rolex watches and ralph lauren bags in Times Square – and han-dling cases that no one else would dream of taking. In this instance Scudder is trying to prove that a deranged homeless Vietnam vet-eran didn’t shoot a guy in a phone booth in cold blood. Grim charac-ters, grim settings, grim actions, but in spite of that you won’t be able to put the book down.

Pat-rick Kenzie and angela Gennaro are hired by two politicians to find the woman who stole some papers and get caught up in a gang war and sleazy politics.

The Case Of

THE MISSING

FL ATL ANDERby Brendan T. Smith

A Nick Savvy Mystery

aDrian MckintyDeaD I well MaY Be (2003)

Poetry and chaos are the words that came to my mind when reading McK-inty’s first novel. Irish ex-pat Michael forsythe survives his association with the New York City Irish mob, his incarceration in a horrific Mexican jail, and makes a long journey back to New York to get revenge.

Michael chaBonTHe YIDDISH PolICeMeN’S

uNIoN (2007)

In the alaskan district of Sitka, a “safe haven” for survivors of the Holo-caust, Meyer landsman is beset with disasters in the cold and bleak frontier of the alaskan panhandle. Politics, his job, and his marriage are not sidelights as lands-man solves the murder of a chess prodigy in the midst of evil and disas-ter.

Stieg larSSonTHe GIrl wITH THe DraGoN TaTToo (2008)

This is not your dull slow moving Swedish mystery. It’s fast, complicated, dark and thrilling. Dis-graced journalist M Mikael Blomkvist teams up with computer wiz and social outcast lisbeth Salander to solve a 40 year old mur-der mystery enveloped in rape, murder, torture, and denial.

Stuart nevilleTHe GHoSTS of BelfaST

(2009)

Gerry fegan is a stone cold killer who in spite of his years with the Ira and in prison seems to have re-tained his soul, and now the ghosts from his past want that, too. The prose is both graphic and poetic, not for the faint-hearted, yet compelling and satis-fying.

BrenDan t. SMithTHe CaSe of THe MISSING flaTlaNDer (2013)

THe TreaT! after all the dark-ness and despair, let weirs Times columnist Brendan Smith light-en things up with his mystery serial. The Case of The Missing flatlander – a Nick Savvy Mys-tery harks back to the serials of “The Saturday evening Post” and “The american Magazine” delivered electronically every other week on www.foolinnh.com. Nick is a New York City dick called away from the lights and glitter to find his friend, Mark Brewster, who’s gone miss-

ing amid the lakes and mountains of New Hampshire. oh, Nicky, don’t despair. we’re counting on you.

J. roBert JaneSMaDrIGal (1999)

J. robert Janes is recom-mended by James r. Benn, author of the outstanding Billy Boyle world war II mys-teries, and I’m glad I fol-lowed the recommendation. Madrigal surely fits the noir category in its setting. You feel enveloped with the dark and the foreboding during the entire read. french police-man Jean-louis St-Cyr and German Gestapo oberdetektiv Hermann Kohler make quite a pair trying to solve the mur-der of a young madrigal singer violently killed in the Pope’s Palace in avignon.

love ouR lakeS & RiveRS: alwayS Take Time To

“clean, dRain & dR y!”Another boating season is finally here! This is good news for the thousands of

boaters that live in and visit New Hamp-shire as there are more than 1,000 lakes and ponds and more than 40,000 miles of rivers and streams to ex-plore and enjoy.

However, this may not be good news for our lakes and rivers. Along with the boating season comes the threat of aquatic nui-sance species trying to hitchhike their way into our waterbodies.

Aquatic nuisance species—plants like variable milfoil and animals like Asian clams—can be spread between waterbodies on boating, fishing, and recreational equipment. Once in a waterbody, they can cause serious problems. Not only do these species crowd out native plants and animals, they affect people by degrading boating, swimming, and fishing areas and by reducing shoreline property values and tourism.

Aquatic nuisance species are difficult

Asian clams are aquatic nuisance animals that have already hitchhiked their way into three waterbodies in New Hampshire. If you see this animal in a waterbody, contact the NH Department of Environmental Services at (603) 271-2248.

and expensive to manage and nearly impossible to get rid of. The best way to deal with them is to prevent them from finding their way into our waterbodies in the first place.

Thankfully, there is some good news to report this boating season on the aquatic nuisance

species prevention front...New Hampshire Lakes Association’s Lake Host

Program—the first line of defense in our battle against invading aquatic nuisance species—officially kicks off its 12th year in mid-May with a new slogan to share with boaters: “Clean,

their own boat and trail-er inspections when a Lake Host isn’t working at ramp they visit, Lake Hosts have surely con-tributed to the prevention of many more aquatic nuisance species frag-ments from sneaking into our waterbodies.

Starting in 2013, Lake Hosts will also talk with boaters about how they can prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance ani-mals which can be even more devastating to our lakes and rivers than aquatic nuisance plants. Because these species, such as the zebra mussel and Asian clam, usually spread while in their lar-val form, they are impos-sible to see when hitch-hiking on a boat, trailer, or recreational gear—making visual detection and hand removal not an effective prevention option. The good news is that nuisance animals can be rendered harmless to our waters when boats, trailers, and recreational gear are properly rinsed and dried. Lake Hosts will encourage boaters to do their parting in preventing the spread of aquatic nuisance animals by always taking time to “Clean, Drain, and Dry!” before launching and af-ter leaving a waterbody. Here’s how:

• Clean off any plants, animals, mud, and other debris from your boat, trail-er, and recreational gear

• Drain boat and equip-ment away from the wa-ter. If possible, rinse ev-

erything that touched the water at home or at a car wash—the hotter and higher the temperature of the water the better

• Dry anything that came in contact with the water. Five days of drying time is best.

Through the NH LAKES Lake HostTM Program thousands of Lake Hosts and boaters have helped prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance plants in New Hampshire for over a decade—we’re con-fident that by adopting the “Clean, Drain, and Dry!” approach, Lake Hosts and boaters can help prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance ani-mals too.

Whatever your reason for boating on our wa-ters—whether you are hoping to catch some fish, taking your kids or grandkids waterskiing, or enjoying the scenery and sun with family and friends—thank you for always taking time to “Clean, Drain, and Dry” your boat, trailer, and recreational gear.

Have a great summer and be sure to attend our “LakeFest 2013: Hands Across the Water” event and festival on Saturday, September 7, at Weirs Beach in Laconia. Be a part of our attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest raft of canoes and kayaks on a single body of water while raising awareness about preventing the spread of aquatic nui-sance species. ice ouT & whaT iT meanSSince early days Ice Out on Lake Win-

nipesaukee has held great meaning to many people, in many different ways. In early days Ice Out opened the transpor-tation lanes, as Spring had turned dirt roads into muddy, impassable routes. The open water of the big lake, made it possible to bring supplies from Alton Bay to Meredith, lumber from Moultonboro to Weirs Beach, as well as connections from Wolfeboro to Gilford and Melvin Village to Weirs.

These needs, after a long Winter, made the recording of Ice Out important to mer-chants and woodsmen and, referring to old records, helped them to plan. Records for Lake Winnipesaukee have been kept since 1887.

Ice Out on Lake Winnipesaukee has been as early as March 23rd in 2012, and as late as May 12th in 1888.

The most frequent ice out has been April 20th, when it departed nine times. The month of March has only had four departures dates and the month of May has seen it depart on twelve different years.

No doubt the best research on Ice Out for Lake Winnipesaukee was done by Dr. William K. Widgert, Jr. formerly of Mer-edith. In 1974 he combined all known re-cords and weather information over those

years and truly analyzed the many factors governing this annual event.

Interestingly, the average deviation over this total time is only 9.2 days. The established criteria for Ice Out cur-rently used is when the M/S Mount Washington can reach all of her ports of call: Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, Alton Bay, Weirs Beach and back to Center Harbor. Occasionally there have been delays on Ice Out due to winds moving ice tooclose to the entrance of Alton Bay, or one of the other ports. One tricky spot is the path between Bear Island and Moultonboro’s mainland, which can still be ice locked when much of the rest of the lake is clear.

Some of the factors affecting Ice Out are consecutively above normal warm days in March; snow fall followed by rain, that raises the lake level, so that ice breaks away from the shoreline and winds that accompany weather fronts that pass thru in April. Fog will also eat at the ice. Warm nights help its departure. as do freezing nights aid its remaining.

All of these factors make Ice Out a guess-ing game. And the earlier the prediction is made, will not involve late weather pat-terns that can be most effective.

So much for the technical part. What does Ice Out really mean? It means the changing of a sea- See ICE on 20

Dr. Widgert used 22 parameters as he studied Ice Out. Among them were:

The boat owner visits the boat yards to see what good buys are avail-able or for upgrading their own boat. Each in search of a better way to enjoy their summer fun on the big lake.

Summer fun on the wa-ter means boating, sailing (a special kind of boat-ing), water skiing, fishing, swimming, the quiet canoe

trips after dinner. It means so many different things as we go into the next season.

For those of us that live on or near Lake Winnipe-saukee it is the ever chang-ing views of this beautiful area. And for those who prefer to live on the hun-dreds of other bodies of water in our state, they too relate to these same experiences.

Join us as we follow the advancement of Ice Out and welcome the next sea-son.

Soon after signing on as Executive Director of the WOW Trail, I joined thousands of runners in Hopkinton for the start of the Boston Marathon. The magnitude of both events was not lost on me.

The vision for the WOW Trail is grand—build a nine mile recreational path through the City of Laconia as a part of the re-gional Winnipesau-kee Trail that will connect Meredith to Franklin. Turn-ing this vision into a reality will be a challenge. Like-wise, running 26.2 miles is sort of a daunting task, too.

Having completed the first goal, my sights are now firmly set on the sec-ond. And, while the project is different, the process remains the same.

Preparation is important. Let a plan be your guide. Just as a runner follows a training plan, our process for designing, fundraising, building, and maintaining the WOW Trail is clearly defined. Our efforts today are focused on extending the Trail from behind the Laconia Public Library at North Main Street, to the Belmont town line. We are currently in the prelimi-nary design phase of this section and look forward to sharing these plans, and the fundraising efforts that go along with them, in the months ahead.

Be flexible. Injuries, ill-ness, and crazy New Eng-land weather are but a few things that interrupt even the best laid marathon training plans. Similarly, we will do our best to com-plete the WOW Trail as planned, and as soon as possible, understanding that circumstances beyond our control may dictate changes along the way.

Not everyone will under-stand your goal. Let’s face

it, not everyone thinks that running one mile is fun, let alone 26.2 miles. Like-wise, some folks are not as thrilled about building recreational trails as we are. Let’s talk about this. A healthy dialogue will help us understand each other’s point of view.

Ask for help. Friends

and family are essential to achieving your goal. Just as the support of family and friends is important to any runner, the WOW Trail’s dedicated Board of Directors, volunteers, and financial supporters are the lifeblood of our organi-zation. Their contributions resulted in the success-ful completion of the first section of the WOW Trail, and will lead us moving forward. We must raise a significant amount of mon-ey and expand our family of supporters to achieve success. Please consider joining us. Use the WOW Trail. Share your support of the Trail with local and State representatives. Vol-unteer your time. Make a donation. Participate in an upcoming fundraising event. Bring your dog to BOW WOW Fest on May 4th. Buy a ticket for the 10th Annual WOW Sweep-stakes Ball on May 18th for a fun night out AND a chance to win $10,000! Participate in WOW Fest on September 14th. It’s a fun- filled event for the whole family featuring two bicycle challenges, 5k and 10K road races, a fun walk, a BBQ lunch, live music & kids activities. Join in the fun! We need your sup-port.

Carry on. It is worth it.

The WOW Trail expansion will test our endurance. Let’s stay focused on the vision. Rail-trails offer safe and accessible routes for work and school com-muting, promote active-lifestyles for all ages, and stimulate local economies by increasing tourism and promoting access to lo-

cal businesses. In fact, according to a recent Belknap County Economic Development Coun-cil study, a com-pleted WOW Trail will bring an esti-mated 152,000 us-ers annually, with 38,000 coming from outside of the Lakes Region—generating nearly $1.8 million

in new visitor spending. A completed WOW Trail will, indeed, contribute signifi-cantly to the vitality of our community.

Let’s get moving and make this project a reality. I’m ready. Are you? See you on the Trail.

Gretchen Gandini is the

Executive Director of the WOW Trail. She’d love to hear from you about the Trail and can be reached at [email protected]. The WOW Trail is a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 organization. For more information, please visit www.wowtrail.org.

HolDerNeSS- It wasn’t referred to as a resort back in 1897, but yet, even way back then people dreamed of getting away to enjoy the relaxation and invigoration that only nature can provide. Two wom-en, Alice Bacon and Mary Armstrong, both educators, saw the need to create a rus-tic camp-like retreat where guests would come and enjoy Squam Lake at Rockywold-Deephaven Camps...today known simply as RDC.

Most of the 60 cottages at RDC haven’t changed much over the years...nor have the memories that have been cre-ated...first swims, first fishing expedition, and unforget-table sunsets with the sound of loons calling. This all-in-clusive vacation gem offers

wonderful dining in a vintage post-and-beam dining hall. That, along with housekeep-ing, makes this truly a mom’s favorite vacation destination. No cooking, no cleaning, just the chance to step back and enjoy the minutes of each day and the mesmerizing beauty that the pristine lake provides. “Champagne in a Tin Cup” may well be the best way to quickly convey the message that is reflected by the entire RDC staff...the very best and the very simplest. Alice and Mary brought their belief that that service to others was an essential part of a life well lived.

Their vision continues to-day, as generations of families meet at RDC annually to reac-

quaint and rejuvenate, building traditions that become an important part of their lives. To this day, modern families are amazed by the RDC tradi-tion of harvesting ice in the winter to use for refrigera-tion! The blocks of ice are delivered to the cottages and placed in traditional iceboxes. This is just one example of the “unplugged” vacation experience that RDC provides.

The opportunity for ac-tivities is abundant, with fishing, sailing, swimming,

kayaking, tennis biking or hiking all within easy reach. Sign up for group sports like softball or a wacky canoe race, yoga or simply read a book by the lake.

Many people are sur-prised to learn that RDC is on Squam Lake, known for being a mostly private lake with little public ac-cess. The fact that RDC is the only resort on the lake makes RDC an even more attractive gem. The found-ers of RDC created the facil-ity with a love of nature and conservation and that com-mitment continues through

its Squam Environmental Preservation Fund. Keeping the surroundings pristine will ensure that RDC will be around for generations to come. And, the manage-ment team works hard to see that it doesn’t change much! THE WEIRS TIMES BOATING & RECREATION GUIDE — Spring / Summer 2013

Excerpted from “The Flat-lander Chronicles” to be released in the summer of 2013.

It was all the fault of my friend from New York.

He came up for a visit and he got in his mind that he wanted to be one with nature.

Where we both grew up, being one with nature meant paying a yearly fee to have a sticker for your car so you could go where there was a large area of trees and grass separated from the turnpikes and avenues which encircled it by a few thousand feet of fencing.

It was considered a walk in the woods.

I warned my friend that taking a walk in the woods in New Hampshire was an experience of a different kind. He was convinced that since I lived here for five years already, I would be the perfect guide.

I couldn’t talk him out of this. I did, however, talk him out of bringing his cooler on our journey. This wasn’t one of your small, picnic by the river coolers, but one of those lifeboat sized ones that you had to strap to your car roof with a bungee cord and pay an extra dollar to get through the tollbooth with.

The woods I chose were near where I lived. I as-sumed we really couldn’t get lost as long as I paid at-tention to where we were.

I brought along some old rags to tear into strips and tie around the trunks of trees to mark our path. After marking the first few, I decided to stick with the thinner birch trees since marking ones with really wide trunks became a two-man operation and we were using up the rags way too fast.

The walk was progress-ing nicely when my friend was suddenly upset by the loud squeaking of what he assumed was a rabid chipmunk. He panicked and broke into a run. Some

deep, dark, instinctual fear had gripped him and he headed aimlessly into the thickening brush. I tried to keep up so as not to lose him. In my haste, I forgot to mark the trees. In no time at all we were lost.

We circled the woods aim-lessly for what seemed like hours but was only, as my friend informed me looking at his new Movado, about ten minutes.

We were making no prog-ress. He looked at me for an answer to his predica-ment.

Being originally from New York, and realizing that it would be best to get back to my roots to communicate with him calmly, I spoke in the form of questions.

“Which way?” he asked.“Where? Out?” I stalled.“Do you know the way?”“What do you think?”“Well. Which way?”“Why? You in a rush?”“What will we eat?”He had me on this one.

After all, it was almost lunchtime and my friends regimented process of con-suming a solid five meals a day was catching up with him. He stopped and sat down against a sappy pine.

I studied the situation and calculated that the amount of body fat he had to burn would most likely keep him coherent for a few days. It was his men-tal capacities I needed to

keep sharp. He needed to chew on something soon so as not to disrupt his habits.

It was then that I saw the answer to this di-lemma. It was some-thing that would not only give us sustenance, but would also provide us the energy to resume be-ing lost.

“Fiddleheads,” I yelled.“Boneheads more like

it,” my friend groaned.“No Fiddleheads. They

are all around us and, not only that, they have little creases in their stems.”

This was my moment of glory; my saving grace. I was utilizing a bit of information that was

passed down from gen-eration to generation and finally made its way to me while accidentally watch-ing a program on outdoor survival one night after the baseball game was on rain delay.

“Fiddleheads are ferns,” I proudly recanted. “You can eat them if they have creases in their stems. If they don’t, they are poison-ous. Or is it the other way around?”

“I ain’t eating no fern.”“Well, even if they have

creases, you still have to boil them.”

“I AIN’T EATING NO FERN!!”

I began scooping up Fid-dleheads faster than a pres-idential primary candidate shaking hands at a Bean Hole Bean dinner. I was careful to make sure they all had creases in them.

I still had to boil them and, as fate would have it, I found an empty can of a popular beer nearby. At first, it gave me hope that humans had once been here and survived. There was also a small stream a few yards away. I filled the can, borrowed my friend’s lighter and sat next to him while holding it under the can. We waited for it to boil.

A half-hour later we still waited. It was then that my friend decided it was a good time to pull out the candy bar he had in his pocket.

“I ain’t eating no fern.”A bit energized, my friend

and I continued on our feeble attempt in getting unlost. I carried the Fiddle-heads and our makeshift pot knowing that we might finally break down at some point and have to take our chances.

A few yards later, my friend tripped over what ap-peared to be an enormous mushroom. It was covered with black spots. We both stood motionless around this freak of nature for a long time, not sure if we should touch it. Was there a poison in it that might seep out from its thickened skin and cloud our already foggy brains?

We were startled by a noise. Something was slith-ering through the brush. We stood breathless, eyes turned towards the ap-proaching menace.

Then we saw it. It first appeared to be a tiny al-bino bear cub but, as it got closer, we realized it was a small boy. He looked at us, picked up the giant mush-room and ran back through the woods, ignoring the best he could these two strange men; one carrying a handful of Fiddleheads and an empty beer can.

We carefully followed, but not too close.

We soon stepped out of the woods into a play-ground of the school which was about a quarter mile from my house. A group of boys were playing soccer.

We hurried from the scene as quickly as possible so as not to bring about any un-wanted publicity.

That night my friend and I drank a few of those popu-lar beers and relived our adventure. We steamed the Fiddleheads to see what they tasted like. I found them interesting and opted for a pizza delivery. My friend loved them and even bought a case of pickled Fiddleheads at the local general store.

He is now in the process of opening a trendy Fiddle-head café on the upper west side of Manhattan.

The Hobo and Winnipe-saukee Scenic Railroads are advising the public that the rail line between Lincoln and Tilton is now active for the season and will continue through December.

The railroad is remind-ing the public that pre-caution should be ex-ercised around moving trains and to always ex-pect a train. Other safety considerations to keep in mind include grade crossing signals, which should always be obeyed. Drivers should stop when they hear whistle signals at grade crossings and never try to beat a train at a crossing.

In an effort to promote the message of railroad safety, the Hobo and Win-nipesaukee Scenic Rail-roads have joined forces with Operation Lifesav-er, a nationally recog-nized non-profit group that works to improve railroad safety through engineering, education and enforcement. “People need to be aware of the potential danger around moving rail equipment, even when rail cars and locomotives are moving at slow speeds.” said Benja-min Clark, Vice President of the Railroad. “Safety is our first priority.”

For the Hobo Railroad, scenic tourist excursion trains will depart from Hobo Junction in Lincoln, NH, on weekends in May and operate daily during the summer and into the fall. The one hour and twenty minute round trip train excursion travels

along the Pemigewasset River and crosses several roadways. The Winnipe-saukee Scenic Railroad will also depart daily from Meredith and Weirs Beach, NH, for a two hour excursion along the shores of Lake Winnipe-saukee. The round trip excursion goes between Meredith, Weirs Beach and Lakeport.

Both locations offer a variety of special events and daily excursions for the general public, school groups and bus tours from May though late October along with Dinner Trains and Fall Foliage Trains which are available for all ages. In addition, the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln of-fers a full schedule of Santa Express Trains, as well as the Polar Express Trains from the Friday following Thanksgiving through the week prior to Christmas each year.

The Hobo Railroad is located in Lincoln, NH just off Exit 32 on I-93, left on Route 112, di-rectly across from Mc-Donalds. The Winnipe-saukee Scenic Railroad station is located off Route 3 at 154 Main Street in Meredith, NH. The Weirs Beach ticket booth is located on the Boardwalk on Lakeside Avenue across from the arcades, just off Route 3. Value is the best way to describe many properties for sale here today in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.

e “Centerpiece” of this area is Lake Winnipesaukee with 182 miles of shorefront and 274 islands. ere are currently 185 Residential* waterfront homes for sale on the “Big Lake” ranging in price from $169,900 - $13,600,000. A number of these waterfront homes are priced at or below the town’s assessed value!

Other major lakes in this area include Big Squam, Little Squam, Winnisquam, Waukewan, Opechee, Newfound, Ossipee and Wentworth—all with similar property values.
