PACIFIC REGIONAL NEWSLETTER
August, 1983
AMERICAN DAFFODIL SOCIETY
REGIONAL DIRECTORS: Marilynn Howe, 11831 Juniette, Culver City, CA. 90230 Carol Hesse, 1400 W. Wilshire, Fullerton, CA. 92633 Bob Spotts, 3934 La Colina Rd., El Sobrante, CA. 94803
REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENT: Bill Rees;, 903 Amberley P1., Santa Maria, CA. 93455
The results of three of the four shows in our region are shown here. Results of the Descanso Show will be in the next newsletter. Congratulations to all the winners. It is now time to think of planting and preparing for next year's shows, and the National Convention to be held in our region. We hope to have the pleasure of your company there. With our heavy rainfall during the last growing season, the bulbs should be in good condition, and ready to bloom forth with quality blooms. While we have no control over weather conditions, in this area we are usually blessed with dry summers so that the bulbs can cure in the ground without being lifted. This year, however, was an exception, with many areas in our usually dry belt receiv-ing several inches of rain during our normally dry summer. Several members have written to say that they have found some basal rot. This points up the need for good drainage, as well as a fungicide dip or dusting of bulbs before planting. While this is no guarantee of eliminating basal rot, it is certainly a deterrent. Some of our members have asked for advice on daffodil culture. Here is a short "rule of thumb". Remember, in planting, low nitrogen fertilizers with trace elements, dug in well below the depth of the bulb, deep watering to encourage root growth, and when the plants push through the ground, copious amounts of water produce the best size and color flowers. Don't forget, the following year's blooms depend on the care the plants get after the current year's bloom is produced. Post bloom watering is important until the foliage starts to brown, or go limp, then withhold water completely. A two or three inch mulch will help keep the soil cool during the hot summer. Good luck and good growing. Hope to see you at one or more of our shows next spring.

Because of our very early season and the return of Northern exhibitors, our early show was the best ever. Cataract was large and smooth, while Memento with its unusual color was outstanding. The yellow reds were excellent, with Torridon and Vertex being tops. Jackson's round rim Kudos 2 Y-YYO was the best of this type seen. Large Rubh Mar and Tournament were selected top for their Divisions, as were Doubtful, Pioulet, Sweetness, and Matador.

This year's show was highlighted by the entries of several top West Coast hybridizers. Sid DuBose won the Green Ribbon using twylve of his seedlings, and also won the best seedling with a smooth 2 W-P. Bill Roese brought several excellent seedlings, most notably three stately yellow trumpets with broad, smooth perianth. Harold Koopowitz sent a trio of his creations to win the prestigious Hybridizer Trophy. Of some interest, the pink collection was won with five Y-Ps. It might also be mentioned that the champion bloom of Dailmanach was one of the most impressive blooms we have ever seen at our shows; good color, very large, faultless perianth and excellent grooming.

1984 A. D. S. CONVENTION
Marilynn Howe, Convention Chairman
The Pacific Region will be hosting the 1984 National Convention in Portland Oregon on April 5, 6, and 7. Convention headquarters will be at the Red Lion Motor Inn, located directly across from Lloyd Center, one of the largest shopping malls in the Pacific Northwest. The Convention Committee has planned two days of tours. On Friday we will visit the gardens of Mrs. Frank M. Driver, Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Kirby, Mrs. Faith McIness, and Murray and Estella Evans. We will have lunch at Manuca, the former estate of the Meier and Frank family. On Saturday we will visit Grant Mitsch, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Havens, with a lunch stop and visit with Father Athanasius Buchholz and his daffodils at Mt. Angel Abbey. Convention Chairman is Marilynn Howe, 11831 Juniette St., Culver City Ca. 90230, phone (213) 827-3229. National Show Chairman is Jay Pengra 954 St. Katherine Dr., Flintridge, CA. 91011. The Convention Committee hopes for a large support from the Pacific Region in both attendance and participation in the National Show.
