The Prez Say’z
I would personally like to welcome back all of our mem-
bers and guests for another outstanding season of music and fun. I am pleased to announce that we have a great 20018/2019 concert season lined up for you to enjoy. It starts on October 14th when the Suncoast Jazz Classic will sponsor “Bobby Tess & the Dixie Chaps” at Banquet Masters. A big “Thank You” to Joan Dragon and her
Classic Board of Directors for their support of our organ-ization. The Jazz Classic in November will be from the
16th to 18th at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort on Sand Key. We welcome Terry Myers in December for our Christmas Party at the US Coast Guard Station at the
St. Pete/Clearwater Airport.
On January 13th, 2019 Paul & Theresa Scavarda, aka “Bakey & Betty”, will lend their special brand of humor for a great concert. Bill Allred and his band will perform his New Orleans style of jazz for our Mardi Gras Party on
February 10th. This event is sure to please. On March 17th, Dick Maley’s WYSIWYG Jazz Band will perform their comedic and traditional style of music for our Society. And finally, rounding out the year we have invited the world fa-mous JB Scott & Lisa Kelly Sextet which will feature the amazing trombonist Dave Steinmeyer, Jay Mueller on bass, Jeff Phillips on piano and Clive Connor on drums to perform on April 7th. WOW! This is going to be a GREAT year of music. Please join us…
In Your Service. Dick Maley

YOUTH AND SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS In the previous issue of your JMN, there was a short bio of the two young musicians we sent to the Teagarden Trad Jazz Camp in Sacramento, CA: Dylan McHann and Alex Malkovich. Following are their impressions after spending a week at the camp. Hello, I'd like to share my experience and opinion of the Teagarden Jazz Camp. Firstly, thank you to the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society for supplying the aid necessary to send Alex and me to the camp. Not only did I learn about traditional music, but how to play and appreciate it. As a saxo-phone and clarinet player, having this style in my repertoire has and will continue to add depth and nuance to my playing. I made many important connections at this camp, many of which I know will last me my entire life. The faculty helped create an exciting and positive learning environ-ment along with the counselors, staff and students. I am very fortunate to have had this opportunity and will cherish the memories I made there for a long time. Dylan McHann The Teagarden camp experience for me was one I truly cherish. Go-ing into the camp I felt a little skeptical, but once I got there and met all the amazing staff, counselors and students, I was completely hooked. Both my-self and Dylan were about ready to run back to that camp after we got dropped off at the airport. From the amazing humor of Bill Dendle, to the very welcoming environment created by people like Rusty, Jeff, Devan, Molly, Nahum, Eddie, Keith, Bobby, Dexter, Shelley, etc. (those people were the ones who most affected me personally, all staff and counselors were absolutely terrific and I love them all.) Being with these fantastic stu-dents and personalities who were all so invested by their craft and making music with friends was stellar, I felt so eager to learn; it was the best I'd felt about playing in a long time. I went into the camp uncomfortable and I end-ed up reluctantly leaving a newfound paradise - I'd go back in a heart-beat. Alex Malkovich

Popular music partners vocalist Lisa Kelly and trumpeter JB Scott make their long - awaited return to the Sun-

ments of classic jazz repertoire to original songs, in the jazz styles of ‘classic swing to New Orleans!’ With in-
fluences of Ella, Diana Krall, Clark Terry, Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, Jack Teagarden, and other nota-
bles of the jazz tradition, the ensemble’s versatility shines through with grooves of in-the-pocket swing, up-
tempo driving bop, sensitive Bossa Nova’s, jazz funk, soulful shuffles, and a taste of Mardi Gras. The group is
co-led by award winning jazz vocalist LISA KELLY and Warburton signature trumpet artist JB SCOTT, who’s 1st
performance was together at the 1997 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, leading to countless appearanc-
es since as featured soloists and band leaders, co-releasing 6 successful CD projects, profiles in the 2010

10 years. He appeared in the movie, “A Few Good Men.” Now back in his hometown of Jacksonville, FL, Dave
is a freelance artist and the jazz trombone adjunct at UNF, traveling to perform, and to mentor and recruit
for the college. Pianist JEFF PHILLIPS is much in demand for his exemplary skills in accompanying vocalists and
horns, in impeccable leadership of rhythm sections, including his own groups, and for his vast tune
knowledge and versatile style ability. He mentors young aspiring players as jazz adjunct at the esteemed Har-

World and an active freelance artist. CLYDE CONNOR is a jazz drum professor and big band director at UF in
Gainesville, much in demand as a free-lance artist. Formally with the Navy Commodores big band in D.C, he

blogs, regularly heard on radio programs world-wide, enjoying continued sales on CDBaby.com, on the
www.kellyscottmusic.com website, and to countless fans at their many performances.

***************************************************************
The Suncoast Jazz Society would like to give a huge “Thanks” to
Joan Dragon and the Suncoast Jazz Classic for their support of our or-
ganization. Our upcoming concert with Bobby Tess & the Dixie Chaps
will be sponsored by the Suncoast Jazz Classic. We thank them for their
support of our organization and look forward to a long and supportive
relationship with Joan Dragon and the Suncoast Jazz Classic. You’re the
Greatest! — Dick Maley
Well, I’m happy to say that the concert at the US Coast Guard Station featuring the “Florida
Boyz” was a HUGE success. Although the venue was a little challenging to locate the journey was
worth the effort. The food was catered by Banquet Masters and was exceptionally good. The buffet
featured a full salad bar with all the fixings and the main course of Chicken Marsala & Baked Chick-
en, plus a fantastic Salmon dish. The venue proved to be outstanding. A very intimate location. The
guest were close enough to the musicians to allow for them to feel like they were a part of the mu-
sic.
The line up of musicians is like a who’s who of the greatest musicians
in Orlando and the country. The front line consisted of Premiere trumpeter,
Charlie Bertini; Trombonist extraordi- naire, Herb Bruce; Clarinetist virtuo-
so , Jim Snyder. Now we go to the back line and backbone of the band. The
fascinating strumming, plucking and vo- cal guru, Bob Leary. Then rounding
out the bottom section of the band was the amazing sousaphone & electric
bassist, Howie Smith and yours truly, pounding out the rhythm, Dick Maley.
If you missed this concert I’m sure those who attended will let you know what you missed.
Not to worry, you will have another chance to enjoy the new venue this coming December when
the Terry Myers Quartet will grace the stage once again at the US Coast Guard Station, Red Tail
Lounge.
I would like to thank my dear friends Pat & LeAnne Beauchamp for all of their assistance in
making this event a success. Also, all of the members that helped me pull this off—Rick Nymeyer,
Patti Maley, Shyrle Pollak & Mary Anderson. You are tireless in your support of your jazz society and
I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
In your service,
Dick Maley
