4(APOUNDThat's right. This fine two bedroom, two bath Rutenberg Home can be bought forless than four cents a pound. Figuring it this way the Laurel costs less per poundthan salt or sugar . . . or bread or milk, but, of course, who buys 147 tons of thoseitems. Of course, no one buys a house by the pound but it is interesting just howmuch value you get in a Rutenberg Home. Whether a house is priced by the pound,by the- foot, or any other way, your true value is not entirely in the concrete, wood, and other materials that go into the construction. The reputation and integrity ofthe builder is most important in any home purchase. If the builder uses the finestmaterials and the best of craftsmen and then stands behind the home in a personalguarantee, you have value that cannot be measured in pounds. Rutenberg Homesare recognized throughout Florida and the iiation as representing the very finest indesign, craftsmanship and materials. But, in addition, Rutenberg guarantees everyhome for one full year and backs that guarantee with a service program that includesfour regular inspections during the year. Such a guarantee could only be givenwith a superior product. Whether you buy this lovely Laurel model, by Rutenberg,by the pound or any other way, it will still only cost $11,500, built'on your lotanywhere in this area. Record Crowd on Hand for Columbus Day BarbecueBy Lilian Avery

Columbus Day dawned bright and clear. At theBoca Cabana Club an army of helpers were puttingfinal touches on what became one of the most suc-cessful fund raising projects of Debbie-Rand Ser-vice League.

It was the Community barbecue. At 3 p.m. the crowd started to arrive and a

steady stream entered the patio for the next fouror five hours. There was continuous service offood.

Tables were consistently full of family parties, neighborly parties and tete-a-tete duos. Therewas plenty of food until the very last large appe-tite was satisfied.

Children had fun — there was plenty of runningspace. There was dancing and entertainment byvocalists, musicians and just looking at the variedgroups of people from here and out of town.

At an early count 1400 tickets were sold. Anestimated $1500 was profit.

Resting after serving dessert for hours and hours are Marymount College stu-dents. Four out of towners enjoyed the barbecue and met local residents.Sitting left, Jane Gascoigne of Virginia, (right) Dorothy Cusick, Maryland.Standing left, Phyllis Salvador, St. Augustine, Fla., and right, Mary AnnDever, Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. and Mrs. Len Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Heck, all of Boca Square, visit while waiting for eatables.

'Come get your Coke" John Hopkins (front right) calls. The Coke stand wasably manned by the U.M. Hopkins family of Boca Villas. Standing at back fromleft are Steve Avery, Pam, Vee and Hoppy. The contented customers in frontare Paul Avery and Danny Oates.

Competitors in the balloon drawing competition areleft David Alley, center Jimmy Alley and back KevinToomey.

Location ChangedMrs. James F. Gog-

gin, publicity chairmanof the Boca Raton Gar-den Club, announces achange in location forthe hat sale. It will nowbe held at 171 S.E. 1stAve. in the Royal PalmShopping Center.

The hats have beenmade by members ofthe Garden Club. Pro-ceeds will go to thebuilding fund of the club.

moved to end on of-fense, and end Bill Gil-lette has been switchedinto the right guard slot.

Tom Osborne, the 208lb. tackle, will move in-to center on defense.

Hazelwood's chargeshave done pretty wellon defense, having givenup only five touchdownsin three games. On theother hand, the offensehas been non-existent,with not a single pointscored all season.

Though Tuesday'sscrimmage was slug-gish, Hazelwood expectshis boys to be "up"for the game with Sea-crest's JVs.

Since Boca Raton stu-dents have been goingto Seacrest for years, with Boca Raton HighSchool gradually takingover the load, the gameis a natural for heatedrivalry.

In fact, both Hazel-wood and Seacrest JVCaoch John Northernsee it the same way —as a beginning to a longand interesting footballrivalry.• "Our boys don't wantBoca Raton to startbeating us," Northernsaid. "We'll be ready."

While the Bobcatshave been droppinggames to Belle Glade,Riviera Beach and Nova, the junior Seahawkshave won one and losttwo, finally getting inthe win column last weekagainst Fort Pierce 12-0.

Spectators at Memo-rial Field tonight shouldsee a wide open game, with Seacrest expectedto fling the ball oftenand with the Bobcatsexpected to move theball more.

Game starts at 7:30.

m

Chuck Lekniskas will be the only Bobcat startertonight playing in his former position. Coach HaroldHazelwood has juggled the other ten men all aroundin an effort to build a scoring aggregation. In threegames this year, the Boca Raton High School foot-ballers haven't pushed across a single point. Lek-niskas is the center on the offensive team.

Jets Join Scoreless Column,End Up In Tie With Deerfield

The tie gave the JetsThe Boca Raton Jetsjoined their older cou-sins — Boca Raton HighSchool and St. Andrew's— in getting in thescoreless column lastSaturday against theDeerfield Beach Rebels.

However, the Jetsmanaged to keep theiropponents also score-less; something theircousins haven't beenable to do.

The Jets ended in ascoreless tie with theheavily favored Rebels, despite the fact that theycompletely dominatedthe play.

a record of two wins, one loss and two ties, thebest record a Boca Ra-ton 115 lb. squad hasever run up. The onlydefeat came at the handsof undefeated Planta-tion, the league leaders.

Air TeamH-BombsScot Squad

St. Andrew's CoachNed Fox thinks theyshould change the namefron Florida Air Acad-emy to Florida FootballAcademy.

You see, the Academyutterly demolished Fox'thin and inexperiencedScots Saturday by a wildblue yonder score of57-0.

The rarified airaround Cape Canaveral— the game was playedin nearby Melbourne —might have contributedto the Scots's secondstraight rout. Their op-ponents now have scor-ed a total of 98 pointsin two contests whilethe Scots haven't man-aged to cross the goalline.

The Airmen hadthings pretty much theirown way. They rang up'19 points in the firstquarter and added 13 inthe second to lead 32-0at the halfway point. St.Andrew's threatenedonly once —• late in thewaning minutes whenthey drove to the sevenyard line.

By Lt. Sal MatteisCity Fire Inspector

Another Fire Pre-vention Week has pass-ed and we hope the ef-fects have not been for-gotten.

Many civic and pub-lic organizations haveput quite a bit of timeand effort in trying tobring forth the impor-tance of Fire Preven-tion and safety. The listof participating partiesis long. The cooperationof the newspapers andradio was just wonder-ful.

Help from the diffe-rent municipal depart-ments and girls in thefront office was a bless-ing, especially our"Girl Friday", Mrs. Is-abelle Hornbake, whospent many an hour pre-paring different formsand mimeographed ma-terials for our use,,

The real unsung he-roes were the boys inblue, our regular andvolunteer firemen, whogave so much of theiroff duty time. They spentdays preparing each

project. They handledall their regular dutiesand alarms with courte-sy and respect becominga fireman of Boca Ra-ton.

WHY IT RINGS TRUE

National Newspaper WeekThe second week in October is

set aside each year as ''NationalNewspaper Week." Thousands ofthe weekly and daily newspapersof the nation pause during thisweek to again restate their objec-tives, to again pledge their re-sponsibility to the community, and to again thank the many peo-ple who make the newspaper pos-sible.

Since its establishment a fewshort years ago, the Boca RatonNews, even though it has had sev-eral owners and publishers, hascontinually stood four-square forbringing its subscribers all thenews affecting them. Like mostcommunity newspapers, we reportnews of our home town.

The Boca Raton News each andevery week carries editorial, newsand advertising in its columns, thus influencing the daily lifeand much of the retail spendingof our area.

The readership of the Boca Ra-ton News is more loyal than thatof any other paper coming into thisarea; the News is the LOCALpaper and most of our subscribersthoroughly digest the contents ofeach and every issu«.

The Boca Raton News concen-trates each week on strictly localnews, and we often probe deep togive you the background of localevents; often in a personal waythat is impossible for out-of-townmedia to achieve. In conjunctionwith the complete coverage of thelocal news, we carry thirty tofifty pictures weekly chroniclingthe events of the week as theyaffect Boca Ratonites.

Though our staff is of necessitysmall, we try to become involvedin every phase of community af-

fairs and to be active in all civicendeavors.

The News also tries to be astaunch protector of communityrights; we try to reflect our chosenrole as the community guardian.Through our news columns westrive to tell both sides of everystory; through our editorial columnsand cartoons we earnestly labor toendorse issues in the best interestof the community and combat thosewe think detrimental to our town'swell being.

Of course, since all staff mem-bers of the News are only human,we often feel that we do not ac-complish as much as we should;but we sincerely strive to give youthe best possible LOCAL news-paper it is possible to produce.

Thanks

It would be impossible to letNational Newspaper Week passwithout a word of thanks to themany people who help make theBoca Raton News possible.

To our readers: thanks for yourkeen interest in the News as re-flected in our ever-growing circu-lation.

To our advertisers: thanks foryour confidence in investing youradvertising dollars with us. Thissupport continues to enable us togive our readers a better newspa-per, and enables your business togrow, thus adding to the progressof the entire area.

To many others: our thanks toyou who have assisted us duringthe past year by bringing in newsand pictures or who have assistedour staff in other ways to help usgive complete and accurate cov-erage of Boca Raton.

SLOW DRIVING cancause accidents too. It'snot as dangerous as ex-ceeding the speed lim-its, of course, but driv-ers who want to dawdleon busy streets andhighways can cause alot of trouble.

Driving slower thannormal speeds creates alot of passing by othermotorists. It's particu-larly bad on two lanehighways where pass-ing is often difficult.Drivers wanting to passwill become impatientafter following at asnail's pace for a whileand will take chancestrying to get around.

It happens quite of-ten also that severalcars will stack up be-hind a slow driver. Thefirst car back may be atimid driver and afraidto pass unless the roadis clear far ahead. Thatmakes it necessary forthe second car to passtwo cars to get around— the third to pass threeand so on. Such a situa-tion invites accidents.

New highways — par-ticularly the Interstates— now post minimumspeeds as well as max-imum speeds. And slowdrivers are given cita-tions as well as speed-ers.

These four rules willbe helpful to people whoare inclined to drive

slower than the normalflow of traffic:

1) Don't go out on thehighways on weekendswhen the roads arecrowded. Take yourpleasure drives early inthe week.

2) Avoid the mainhighways; take countyroads that usually havefewer t rucks and lightertraffic; and are morepleasure to drive any-way.

3) If several ca r s a refollowing you, put onyour right turn signaland pull off at the nextgood place so they canpass . You'll find it alot more pleasant nothaving several ca r sbreathing down yourneck.

4) Check your sittingposition. Many slow d r i -vers a re afraid to drivefaster because they sittoo far down into theseat and can hardly seeover the steering wheel.Build up your seat soyou get a clear viewahead and on both s ides.Try it and see how mucheasier it is to drive thatway.

I t ' s well to keep inmind that slow drivingisn't always safe driv-ing. Older people, sight-see r s and "Sunday d r i -v e r s " must take specialprecautions to avoidtrouble.

It is a shock to anymotorist to get a citationfor driving too slow!

today's society, sinceit influences and is in-fluenced by economics, politics, rnoral con-cepts — in fact all theinfluences that bearupon each of us as in-dividuals — it is re-freshing to find a bookthat throws some lighton the argument andthrows cold water onmuch of the partisanheat that is generated.

Walter .Tapiin's bookdoes this in a literate, logical style. He is Eng-lish and his referencesare British, but this inno way lessens the per-tinence of his remarks.

Tapiin covers the ideaof human wants, persua-sion and conviction, andgives back to the con-sumer the ultimate con-trol for buying or notbuying. Eggheads getquite a raking for theirremark that "advertis-ing appeals to the low-est common denomina-tor." Tapiin points outthat mathematicians re-fer to the "least" com-mon denominator andthat the two are not sy-nonymous. He concludesthat the desire for graceand charm, love of home

larships for Palm BeachCounty, will explain theobjectives and operationof the program whichbrings high school stu-dents to the UnitedStates from foreignlands. Miss Clair Di-Frank, faculty memberof the A.F.S. SeacrestHigh School chapter, will tell how the chap-ter was organized andis functioning.

Miss Betsy Rusch, student representativeof the Seacrest A.F.S.chapter will outline howthe foreign scholarshipstudent is fitted intoschool life.

"Advertising" is athoughtful book and notone to be rushedthrough. It deals withfine distinctions anddelicate variations inthought-patterns. Anyreviewer does it a dis-service to try to para-phrase and shorten theauthor's route.

But if you sometimestry to figure out whyyou bought the cerealadvertised by "Tony Ti-ger" rather than Den-nis James (in otherwords would you ratheridentify with the parentsof a darling two-yearold than with the over-35-year-old who mustwatch his weight and di-gestion) and if you tryto decide if you use anafter-shave lotion tosoothe your skin or toattract a lady with yourmasculine scent, "youwill find many ideasworth pondering in theTapiin book.

Special Session, New Taxes SeenIf College Building Bonds Fail

A special session ofthe Legislature beforenext spring to raise tax-es to pay for collegeclassrooms was pre-dicted today if the Col-lege Building Amend-ment fails to win ap-proval of the voters onNovember 5th.

Raleigh W. GreeneJr. , chairman of theFlorida Council of 100,said every reliablepro-jection indicates an in-flux of between 27,000and 30,000 new studentsin Florida's universitiesand junior colleges inthe next two years.

Greene said these arethe children from thehuge post World War IIbaby crop and that thepresent public institu-tions of higher learningsimply do not have theclassrooms, laborator-ies and equipment to ac-commodate and trainthem.

The College BuildingAmendment would au-thorize a $75,000,000bond issue to expandand upgrade five publicuniversities, 23 publicjunior colleges andwould start constructionof two new universities. It would affect the 29

counties which produce75 per cent of total Flor-ida college enrollment.

"We'll have the stu-dents whether we get theC o l l e g e B u i l d i n gAmendment or not,"Greene said, adding,"Without it, to take careof them just next yearFlorida probably wouldhave to go from a bal-anced budget to a $23,-000,000 deficit. I senseevery indication aroundthe state that this willmean a special legisla-tive session to raisetaxes to pay for this."

The Council of 100chairman added: "No-body likes to think aboutthat, but i t 's a fact andwe've got to face it."

Greene urged supportfor the College BuildingAmendment, Issue No. 2on the state ballot, as

"a sound financial al-ternative to new taxesfor education."

The bond issue will befinanced from the cur-rent taxes on the state'sutility companies. It isestimated that financingof the bond issue willcost about $5,000,000annually — or about $1a year for each Floridacitizen — but this willbe paid from the utili-ties tax with no new taxagainst the public.

Florida's elementaryand grade school expan-sion was financed in thesame manner in 1952 bypledging the fees fromauto license tags. Pub-lic taxes were neverraised. The same child-ren aided in 1952 havenow attained college ageplacing an unprecedent-ed demand on state fa-cilities.

Architect's sketch shows one of the Rutenberg homes, the Riviera HI. Thefirm, which operates a branch in Boca Raton, reports record sales during thefirst eight and one half months of this year.

Rutenberg Reports Record SalesRutenberg Homes has

set a new sales recordfor the first eight andone-half months of 1963,according to Thomas T.Winkler, vice presidentof Rutenberg Construc-tion Co., Inc.

Figures on new homesales for the period Jan-uary 1 to September 13,1963, show sales ofmore than $10 million inthe seven branches ofRutenberg Homes inFlorida. This figure isthe largest in the firm's10 year history for anycomparitive period.

Rutenberg Construc-tion Co., Inc. startedhome building opera-tions in Clearwater in1954 and pioneered the

"on your lot" buildingconcept. In 1962, thefirm grossed over $9million in its six bran-ches including the onein. Boca Raton. In Juneof this year the CapeCanaveral area wasadded as the seventhbranch. Plans are nowunderway to open theeighth branch in Sara-sota in the near future.

Since the Rutenbergfirm works only withconventional mortgages, with no FHA or VA fi-nancing offered, thissales figure representsa major cash investmentby the home buyers,Winkler emphasized.

"We feel that thissales record indicated

a strong and growingeconomy in the State ofFlorida. Our recordsalso show that the newhome market is ex-panding rapidly, wherein the past the bulk ofour sales was confinedto the retirement group,we now find that young-er families make up aconsiderable portion ofour sales," Winklersaid.

In addition to BocaRaton, Rutenberg hasbranches in St. Peters-burg, Fort Myers, Na-ples, West Palm Beach,Clearwater and CapeCanaveral.
