If completed, the bridge over the Strait of Messina -- thetwo-mile-wide body of water separating Sicily from theItalian mainland -- would become the longest suspensionbridge ever built, stretching 2.5 miles end to end. Given thesize of the span, a cable-stayed or rigid-frame bridge wouldhave been the obvious choice. But the depth of the watermade that impossible.

To that problem, add wind, earthquakes, andmoney. To date, the project backers have solved the firstthree. But despite a promise from the Italian government tofund 50% of the costs, Stretto di Messina has yet to raise thefull funding for what it says will cost $5 billion dollars andtake 11 years to build.

I'm awake. I didn't need an alarm to wakeme today. What is the time anyway? Whoa

that is too early to even get out of bed! There is nothing to prepare for either. Just

the race to be run Just the wait for the gunshot that point is where I stop thinking. There is life afterwards too. But, this race hasbeen something I have been working for andseems to be an end in itself.

I need something to do for the next fewhours. Maybe write my diary? There are somany feelings crowding up inside me and Ifeel so overwhelmed. I want to remember

this though the way I feel now that I amhere, at the Olympics, just before my firstrace. I doubt if I am ever going to feel thisway again in my life. Where is my diary?Oh..got it. Ok.

    A short storyby Madhan Subramanyam

God, why am I crying? I rememberthe first time I beat her. She looked at meand smiled. I struck the right rhythm thatday and knew what I had to do to beat her. After that race, I regularly came first. I startedcompeting at the international level. Shemade it to a few of them but went back tonational level games. 'I tried to make her

come for this race in Australia but sherefused. She said something strange 'Youhave to find your next mountain andconquer it.' I wonder what she meant.'

Oh...time to get ready for the race.Three hours later:

I hadn't understood then, but I do now. Iknew when I ran this race. I saw the shadowof every athlete I have worked to surpass as I

ran today. I know how I made it so far whenI stood on that podium and had the bronzemedal placed around my neck. It isn't assimple as running faster. She had been part ofthe infrastructure. She had been part of thebench strength. She had been part of thosethousands of faceless sportsmen who makeone champion. Because if not for them, theirchampion they help to make wouldn't have

had a person to compete with or against.Yes, they didn't make it to the top. But only

someone like her can provide enoughcompetition to spur someone like me on.

What if I had competed againstperfection? Is there even such a thing?

Would I have got the gold then? I thinknot. Because even winning any race onlymeans that I am better than the personwho came in second. Competition isalways is comparative- never superlative.

They found that interesting to chewit and thought that it could make money forthem. This was the first time in history whenthe chewing gum was sold commercially. Twoyears after their successful experiment withthe spruce tree resin, which they convertedinto gum, they started with their first majorgum manufacturing plant. They also addedflavor to the gum and introduced paraffin in itto give extra soft and rubbery feel. The plantwas named "Curtis Chewing Gum Factory".

Next in early 1880, the Fleer brothers,Henry Fleer and Frank Fleer experimentedwith CHICLE which is obtained fromsapodilla tree.
