Volume the FirstA facsimileJane Austen
With an introduction by Kathryn Sutherland
A plain, blank stationer’s notebook from the
1780s in the Bodleian Library contains some
of the most famous juvenilia in all of English
literature. Copied out in Jane Austen’s youthful
hand, Volume the First takes its name from the
inscription on the cover and preserves the stories,
playlets, verses and moral fragments she wrote
during her teenage years.
For the first time, the entire manuscript of Volume
the First is available in a printed facsimile. In it,
we see the young author’s delight in language;
in expressing ideas and sentiments sharply and
economically. We also see Jane Austen learning the
craft of genre by closely observing and parodying
the popular stories of her day. Kathryn Sutherland’s
introduction places Jane’s Austen’s earliest works
in context and explains how she mimicked even
the style and manner in which these stories were
presented and arranged on the page.
224 pages, 180 x 140 mm
ISBN: 978 1 85124 281 8
Hardback, £25.00October 2013
Clearly the work of a teenager, Volume the First
reveals the development of the unmistakable voice
and style that would mark out Jane Austen as one
of the most popular authors of all time. None of
her six famous novels survives in manuscript form.
This is a unique opportunity to own a likeness
of Jane Austen’s hand in the form of a complete
manuscript facsimile.
Kathryn Sutherland is Professor of Bibliography
and Textual Criticism in the University of Oxford.

The College Graces of Oxford and CambridgeReginald H. Adams
At which Oxford college does a trumpeter
summon you to dinner? What does the
appearance of a rose bowl signify? How would
you use a grace cup as distinct from a sconce cup?
The custom of dining in formal hall at Oxford
and Cambridge dates back to the earliest days
of college life. Before each dinner, according to
ancient statutes, grace must be spoken in Latin,
and although the text and nature of the grace for
each college may have changed over the years, it
is a tradition which remains current to this day.
Following a historical introduction, the full Latin
texts of the graces of the colleges of Oxford and
Cambridge are given in this book, accompanied
by a facing English translation. Special graces
reserved for feast days are also included, along
with an explanation of some of the traditions
which accompany dining in college halls.
From an exploration of the twelfth-century
monastic origins of the texts to the creation of
two-word graces in the nineteenth century and
new texts for the modern age, this meticulous
collection reveals how the tradition of the Latin
grace has survived and evolved over the centuries
and offers a rare glimpse inside the private halls
of Oxbridge.
Reginald H. Adams was a member of St John’s
College, Oxford.

First published in 1920, How to Dine in Style
opens a window onto the golden age of elegant
dining, where the basic function of ingesting
nourishment was elevated to a high social art,
attended by intricate details and elaborate ritual.
Starched linens, candles, white gloves, apéritifs,
ball suppers, French menus and garden parties
– this is the world of the decadent classes who
came to prominence in the post-war period.
Published in an age where achieving a reputation
for throwing recherché dinner parties was a
route to international celebrity, this is a book
about food as performance art. In it we catch
tantalizing glimpses of astonishing excess such
as the craze for eccentric venues for dinner
parties, including the roof of a Chicago home
(for amateur mountaineers), a lion’s den, and a
gondola in the Savoy.
An engaging blend of practical advice and a
catalogue of eccentricity, this book contains
everything you need to know, from the fine art
of composing a menu to the practicalities of the
correct order and temperatures for serving wines.
‘As soon as the sorbet is served, the butler or a waiter hands round a large box of Russian cigarettes, and a second one passes a lighted spirit lamp or a small candle.’

‘When driving, look on all other drivers as fools.’

Hardback, £4.99October 2013
How should a motorist converse with the police?
Should you switch off your headlights when
another car approaches? What parts of the engine
can you fix with a sheet of emery paper, insulating
tape and copper wire?
The 1920s heralded the age of motoring with the
arrival of the ‘affordable’ Austin Seven and the
increasing popularity of Morris Motors in Britain.
Yet the first edition of the Highway Code would
not appear for another decade and the rules of
the road were rudimentary, to say the least.
This charming and practical guide provides
enduring advice to novice motorists on how to
cope with such hazards as skidding, headlight
dazzle and sheep on the road, much of which is
still instructive on today’s car journeys. Many of
the author’s observations will strike a chord with
the modern driver: ‘When driving, look on all
other drivers as fools ...’. Others evoke the style
and etiquette of a glamorous bygone era: ‘A good
chauffeur ... will save his employer a great deal
of expense’; ‘an average speed of twenty miles
per hour ... allows you and your passengers to see
something of the countryside’.
Covering such topics as unscrupulous second-
hand car dealers, women drivers and ‘dashboard
delights’, this little book provides all the
information needed to get maximum enjoyment
out of the open road, complete with leisurely
picnics and a little light motor-car maintenance.
How to be a Good Mother-in-LawEveryone knows a joke about mothers-in-law, but
what are the golden rules you need to become
a popular one? The authors of this pioneering
guide, first published in the 1930s, aimed to
improve dramatically relationships for all the family
with sound advice which is as relevant today as it
was in the early twentieth century: ‘If your opinion
is not sought, don’t volunteer it.’
Practical tips are given on a range of issues, such as
how to visit a married daughter, how best to interact
with grandchildren, how not to pass comment at
the dinner table and what degree of independence
should be granted to married sons. The guide even
contemplates living with the married couple and
offers advice on how to negotiate this situation, as
well as giving examples of how not to behave on
your son or daughter’s wedding day.
How to be a Good Motorist
Packed with amusing scenarios of provocative
behaviour as well as pithy advice, and illustrated
with contemporary line drawings, this charming
guide will win over both novices and veterans in
this much maligned role.

When American troops arrived in Paris to help
maintain order at the end of the Second World
War they were, at first, received by the local
population with a sense of euphoria. However,
the French soon began to resent the Americans
for their display of wealth and brashness, while
the US soldiers found the French and their habits
irritating and incomprehensible. To bridge the
cultural divide, the American generals came up
with an innovative solution. They commissioned
a surprisingly candid book which collated the GIs’
‘gripes’ and reproduced them with answers aimed
at promoting understanding of the French and
their country.
The ‘gripes’ reveal much about American
preconceptions: ‘The French drink too much’,
‘French women are immoral’, ‘The French drive
like lunatics!’, ‘The French don’t bathe’, ‘The
French aren’t friendly’ are just some of the many
complaints.
Putting the record straight, the answers
cover topics as diverse as nightclubs, fashion,
agriculture and sanitation. They also offer an
unusual insight into the reality of daily life
immediately after the war, evoking the shortage
of food and supplies, the acute poverty and the
scale of the casualties and destruction suffered
by France during six years of conflict.
Illustrated with delightfully evocative cartoons
and written in a direct, colloquial style, this gem
from 1945 is by turns amusing, shocking and
thought-provoking in its valiant stand against
prejudice and stereotype.

Great Medical DiscoveriesAn Oxford storyConrad Keating
William Harvey, Thomas Willis and Thomas
Sydenham all gained eponymous immortality with
their pioneering research into the circulation of
the blood and the workings of the human body.
In the early twentieth century Dorothy Hodgkin’s
development of x-ray crystallography earned her
a Nobel Prize and more recently, Richard Doll’s
work on smoking, pioneering glucose sensors
for diabetes and new treatments for haemophilia
have helped save millions of lives.
Great Medical Discoveries traces how these
examples of groundbreaking and vital work form
part of a wider tapestry of medical research,
from the discovery of anaesthetics to pioneering
neurosurgery, and demonstrates how such
enduring contributions to medical science have
helped to shape our lives, both locally and
internationally.
Conrad Keating is the Writer-in-Residence at
the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine at
Oxford University. As a professional historian he
has written for newspapers, radio and television.
The ‘miracle drug’ penicillin was first given
intravenously to a patient in Oxford on 12
February 1941, leading to a transformation in the
way that bacterial infection is understood and
treated. What was to become one of the greatest
stories in biomedical history not only had roots
in Oxford, but was the latest in a line of pivotal
medical discoveries made in the city.
This short illustrated history chronicles the story of
Oxford’s contribution to science, from its medieval
origins to its present status as one of the world’s
leading scientific institutions. In charting Oxford’s
remarkable history, the book showcases twenty
discoveries which have shaped medical science
across the centuries, with worldwide impact.
In the early seventeenth century few centres could
rival Oxford in the field of experimental medicine.

NEW PAPERBACK EDITION
Paintings from Mughal IndiaAndrew Topsfield
A unique style of court painting, combining
Persian, Indian and European elements, developed
in India under the Mughal emperors in the
sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Originally
an art of book illustration, it soon gave rise to
highly naturalistic portraiture and scenes of court
life, among other subjects. These elegant and
expressive works reflect the splendour of the
Mughal empire, as well as the enthusiasm of
the emperors from Akbar (1556–1605) onwards
for stories of adventure and romance, for the
recording of great imperial assemblies, or the
meticulous depiction of the flora and fauna of
India. Among the highlights of the book are the
illustrations to Akbar’s magnificent Baharistan
manuscript of 1595, and the court scenes from
the reigns of Shah Jahan (1627–58) or the
pleasure-loving Muhammad Shah (1719–48).
This book reproduces many of the finest Mughal
and Deccani paintings preserved in the Bodleian
Library’s rich and historic collection, largely formed
between 1640 and 1900. These pictures range
in date from around 1560 to 1800, when British
influence was becoming dominant in India.
Each image is presented as a full-page colour
plate with facing text describing its subject and
significance, while the introduction situates the
works within the general context of the period
and its art. A number of textual revisions have
been made since the book first appeared in 2008.
Andrew Topsfield is Keeper of Eastern Art at
the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. He has written
many books and articles on Indian painting in the
Mughal period and related subjects.
