There are over 3 million skin cells on every square centimetre of your body—billions and billions of cells in all, each one vital to your body’s health and wellbeing. Skin is responsible for holding good things, like water and nutrients, inside your body—and for keeping bad things out. That includes germs and other environmental stressors and impurities. Thankfully, healthy, cared-for skin is remarkably good at what it does!Skin is a fairly complex organ, with several layers and functions. Skin contains blood ves-sels, nerves, sebum (oil) and sweat glands, pores, and hair follicles.

Here are some of the most common challenges the skin on your body faces. To minimise these effects and keep your skin in great shape, it’s essential to enjoy a simple daily G&H body care routine. Cleansing and moisturising are key—in the morning and all day long—along with deodorant.

Dryness and DiscomfortOne of the most common problems for body skin is dehydration. Dry skin feels tight, taut, and uncomfortable. It may be itchy or feel irritated.

Hygiene and OdourYour mother was right: washing your skin (even behind your ears) is important. No one likes to think about it, but skin is naturally home to a range of micro-organisms. And while some are beneficial to skin and health, others—like germs and odour-producing bacteria—are not. Washing with the right soap helps, but soap that’s too strong in the wrong way can damage skin and worsen dryness.

Germs: We all know germs from other people and from food can easily be spread by hand-to-hand contact. Proper hand washing with soap and water is a proven way to minimise the spread—and the same goes for other areas as well.

Odour: A key function of skin is to help regulate body temperature by producing sweat. And while sweat itself doesn’t smell, natural odour-emitting bacteria can feed on it and multiply rapidly.
