Here’s why that cold sore keeps coming back (InForum, May 16, 2011)

Cold sores are a common ailment caused by a type of herpes virus. About 70% of people are infected with this virus, but only about one-third of them develop cold sores. Once infected, the virus stays in a victim’s body for his or her whole life. The virus hides in sensory nerves where it is not attacked by the immune system. There is no cure. The virus can be through contact at any time, but is most likely during a cold sore outbreak. Prescription anti-viral medications can ease symptoms. Ice can reduce swelling during outbreaks, and holding a cotton ball soaked in milk can alleviate symptoms. Milk contains a protein that halts the herpes virus. A thick layer of vasoline can protect the wound from invading bacteria.
