Terminology explanationsTo describe the different terms that appear in this document, an example of an attach-ment is shown here.
The attachment involves fitting body adaptation brackets to chassis frames and sub-frames.
Attachment refers to fitting of the bodywork to the truck.
A flexible attachment allows a certain movement longitudinally and/or upwards and, in some cases, downwards. The opposite is a rigid attachment, which means that the bracket is secured using a screw joint and weld joint.
The illustrations show how flexible or rigid attachments can be achieved for the same parts by creating different distances between the chassis frame bracket and subframe bracket.

More information can be found in the following documents:• Selecting the subframe and attachment• Comounting with Scania components• Body adaptation brackets and hole pattern
More information is found in the document for the respective application.• Example of a search term: Box trucks.
Further information about tightening torque is available in the Screw joint docu-ment.
General information IMPORTANT!
Check attachment screws and retaining screws once a year on all body adaptation brackets. Retighten the screws if necessary.
IMPORTANT!
All screws that have been removed when attaching the chassis frame or subframe must be renewed with corresponding new screws.
The following screws must be used when attaching and fastening:
• Attachment screw, M14, strength class 10.9.• Retaining screw, M16, strength class 8.8.
Body adaptation brackets are used as a system for attachment of the bodywork. De-pending on how different types of body adaptation brackets are combined, the de-sired properties ranging from rigid to flexible attachment can be achieved.
Chassis frame brackets and subframe brackets can be ordered factory fitted or pur-chased separately for retrofitting by the bodybuilder. If the bodybuilder manufac-tures brackets, Scania's requirements for design and material properties must be followed.

Bodywork attachment
Body adaptation bracket propertiesBody adaptation bracket characteristics apply to both chassis frame brackets and sub-frame brackets. The properties are a requirement for in-house manufactured body ad-aptation brackets. Scania’s body adaptation brackets have the following properties:
• Scania’s angle brackets are bent without any reinforcement, which gives a certain flexibility upwards and downwards.
• The angle brackets have a bend radius of 8 mm and are angled at 90°.• Body adaptation brackets are manufactured from hot-rolled steel. The yield point
is 500 MPa and the ultimate tensile strength is 550 – 700 MPa.• Body adaptation brackets are made of an 8 ± 0.1 mm thick steel plate.• Mounting holes for the chassis frame and subframe have a diameter of 14.8 mm.• Mounting holes in angle brackets are oval.
Surface treatment of in-house manufactured body adaptation brackets must be car-ried out in accordance with the document Painting chassis-related components.

Use pre-drilled holesAs far as possible, use pre-drilled hole patterns. If it is necessary to make additional holes in the chassis frame, Scania’s instructions must be followed.
More information can be found in the document Drilling holes in the chassis frame.
Prepared space for body adaptation bracketScania strives to leave the upper row of holes on the frame side members free so that the body adaptation brackets can be placed with optimum spacing. If a chassis com-ponent uses one of the upper holes, it is comounted with a spacer. The spacer has the same thickness as the Scania body adaptation brackets and can be replaced by a bracket if necessary.
IMPORTANT!
If the spacer is replaced with your own body adaptation bracket, the bracket thickness must be 8 ± 0.1 mm. If the tolerance is exceeded, there is a risk of damage to the co-mounted chassis component option or it may loosen from the vehicle.

Flexible attachmentNote:In the case of flexible attachment, the maximum permitted tightening torque is 25 Nm for M16 screws with strength class 8.8.
Note:Ensure lateral control/stabilisation. The higher chassis frame brackets go on the sub-frame and stabilise lateral movement. When using a low chassis frame bracket, the attachment must be supplemented with at least one bracket per side for lateral stabi-lisation.
The higher chassis frame brackets that go on the subframe stabilise lateral move-ment. More information about high and low chassis frame brackets is available under the heading Chassis frame angle brackets.
Flexible attachment upwards and longitudinallyFit the angle brackets one vertical distance from each other; see illustration. This is to allow movement longitudinally and a certain upward movement from the chassis frame. 10 ± 5 mm is a suitable vertical distance between the brackets. The attachment must consist of a coil spring with spring disc, rubber pad or cup spring which allows for upward movement.

Example of the attachment with springs.
Attachment with springsNote:A distance of 10 ± 5 mm between the brackets must be maintained after the attach-ment screw with spring is fitted.
Use retaining bolt M16, strength class 8.8 with a lock nut and spring disc. The spring disc must have a thickness of at least 6 mm and be used on both sides of the spring. Retaining bolt M14 with strength class 10.9 must be used if all parts are adapted for it.
The coil spring must have a spring constant between 140 and 145 N/mm. The thread thickness should be 8 mm with at least 8 active revolutions and a unloaded length of at least 100 mm.
The spring disc should be appropriate for the coil spring’s properties.
Proceed as follows:
1. Tighten the retaining screws on all brackets so that the spring is fully compressed without the brackets being deformed or the tightening torque exceeding 25 Nm.
2. Release the retaining screw 15 mm on the front bracket.3. Unscrew the attachment screws 10 mm in the second bracket.4. Unscrew the attachment screws 5 mm in the third bracket.

Attachment with rubber bushingsNote:A distance of 10 ± 5 mm between the brackets must be maintained after the attach-ment screw with rubber bushing is fitted.
Use retaining bolt M16, strength class 8.8 with lock nut and washer. The washer must have an outer diameter of 40 mm and a thickness of at least 6 mm. A washer must be used on both sides of the rubber bush. Retaining bolt M14 with strength class 10.9 must be used if all parts are adapted for it.
The rubber bush should be 40 mm high with maximum permissible hardness 80 shore. The rubber bushing must be 40 mm in outer diameter, with an inner diameter of 17 mm.
Proceed as follows:
Tighten the retaining screw until the rubber bush has been compressed by 4 mm with-out the tightening torque exceeding 25 Nm.
For vehicles with frame strength level 1, attachment with only one M16 screw per bracket can be considered.

Flexible attachment upwards and downwardsFit flexible brackets that allow the bodywork to move upwards and, to a certain ex-tent, downwards towards the chassis frame. There are different ways of makinf the attachments, e.g. with steel springs or rubber bushes. Flexible brackets must be ca-pable of withstanding a load of 2,200 kg each.
Sometimes the front body adaptation bracket may need to be placed behind the rec-ommended area. If this is the case, reinforce the chassis frame at the front bracket or make a bracket with large contact surface against the chassis frame on single frame trucks. This reduces the risk of frame oscillation.
More information on attachment with a large contact surface against the chassis frame is available in the document Bulk tankers.
The maximum permitted centre distance between the body adaptation brackets is 1,500 mm. Place the body adaptation brackets in connection with the spring brackets or chassis cross-members. There are exceptions for e.g. refuse collection trucks.
More information about exceptions when positioning body adaptation brackets is available in the document Refuse collection trucks.

Longitudinally flexible attachment with angle bracketsNote:A distance of 10 ± 5 mm between the brackets must be maintained after the attach-ment screw has been fitted.
To permit longitudinal movement, angle brackets are fitted with a vertical distance between them. Suitable measurement between the brackets is 10 ±5 mm.
Use retaining bolt M16, strength class 8.8 with lock nut and washer. A washer should be used at the screw head and lock nut and it should be at least 6 mm thick. Retaining bolt M14 with strength class 10.9 must be used if all parts are adapted for it.
The aim of tightening torque not exceeding 25 Nm is to allow a longitudinal move-ment between the chassis frame and subframe. Excessive tightening torque counter-acts the attachment type's purpose and the brackets will deform.

Attachment with spring clipsNote:Fastenings with spring clips must always be approved by Scania.
More information about the bodybuilder's responsibility when fitting with spring clips is available in the following document:
• Use and responsibility.• Declaration of conformity.
Fastening with spring clips or U-bolts is not recommended by Scania for the fitting of subframe or components to the chassis frame, see illustration.
In certain cases it may still be necessary to use this type of fastening. In such a case, follow the points below to ensure the fastening is carried out correctly.
• Reinforce the inside of the chassis frame with spacers to prevent local deforma-tions, mostly in the flanges. The spacers must be kept in place with suitable guides. Welding is not permitted as this will weaken the chassis frame.
• The spacers must be designed in such a way that they do not expose the chassis frame to chafing. Use separator inserts to reduce the risk of chafing damage.
• As spring clips allow large movements between the chassis frame and subframe, they must be supplemented with lateral control.
• Always use at least 2 rigid brackets per side on the rear part of the chassis frame.• The distance between the centres of the spring clips should be a maximum of 900
mm.

Rigid attachment with angle bracketsTo obtain a rigid attachment with angle brackets, the chassis frame and subframe an-gle brackets must fit tightly together. They must align vertically and horizontally.
To ensure the subframe rests against the chassis frame and to facilitate the subframe manufacturing process, a space between the angle brackets is allowed. The space must be filled with a spacer or separator insert.
Use retaining bolt M16, strength class 8.8 with lock nut and washer. A washer should be used at the screw head and lock nut and it should be at least 6 mm thick.
The subframe bracket can be screwed or welded in.

IMPORTANT!
Welding should be carried out in a professional manner. Weld continuously without interruption, otherwise there is a risk of crack formation. If necessary, it is only per-missible to break and restart the weld joint in the central part of the weld joint (2). Other weld joints (1) must be continuous.
Note:To avoid the risk that the end points of the weld joint end up in areas of high stress, the weld must start and end as follows:• At least 30 mm from the lower edge of the subframe.• At least 20 mm in front of and behind the bracket.
More information on welding can be found in the document Welding in the chassis frame.
