MESSAGE FROM TEAM BOGS 2013 -14

Dear friends

It just feels like yesterday in May last year when I was installed as your 55th President and now the time has already arrived to pen my

final message for the third issue of “BOGS Times” this year to be released on May 24, 2014 during the AGM……it truly is amazing how time has just whisked by!!

Although each and every academic and social programme that was held or supported by our Society was special in its own way, which will forever be etched in my memory, for me the ones that clearly stood out were the “77th Foundation Day Celebration” in memory of Late Dr Sobha Ghosh at the glittering Crystal Room of Taj Bengal, the Inaugural “Dr Subhas Mukherjee Memorial Lecture” at the magnificent Ballroom of The Oberoi Grand, the live workshop on “Advanced Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery”, “ART-AIM Update 2013” at Hyatt Regency, the hugely successful “BOGSCON 39” at ITC Sonar with a record 557 delegates in attendance, ISCCP 2014 Annual Conference at Hotel Hindustan International and the recently

concluded “Medicolegal Update 2014” the 4th National Medicolegal Conference at Hyatt Regency. What made it even more palpably moving was the noble gesture of our Managing Committee (MC) members to initiate scholarships for needy MBBS students and provide a token grant of Rs.1,00,000/- each to Mrs Namita Mukherjee (ailing wife of Late Dr Subhas Mukherjee) and to Bharat Sevashrama Sangha for facilitating on-going relief and rehabilitation work in Uttarakhand!!

It has been an absolute privilege to serve as your President this year and behind the scene there have been numerous heroes who have collectively made my task of running our beloved Society like “a piece of cake”!! I take this opportunity to sincerely thank my able and dynamic Hony Secretary Dr Bhaskar Pal who shouldered most of the burden (sometimes almost single-handedly!!) and to all the members of the MC for their unstinting support, love and affection. To the office staff of BOGS, I really have no words to thank Biswajit, Sanjoy, Jakir and Shiba for their hard work, diligence and untiring efforts, often well beyond their hour of duty, in addition to coping up with my frequent tantrums!!

I wish the incoming team led by Prof Ashis Kumar Mukhopadhyay all the very best. I’m sure with their vibrant thoughts and newer ideas, the Society will go many notches higher.

Team BOGS this year has strived very hard to maintain harmony, transparency, consistency and strict fiscal discipline. This would not have been possible but for the solidarity, trust and faith of all our members in us, to whom I am personally indebted, reminding me of two famous statements very apt for me personally this entire year:

“Do not protect yourself by a fence, but rather by your friends”– Czech proverb.

“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher” – Oprah Winfrey.

Long live BOGS!!

Jai Hind.

Prof Krishnendu GuptaPresident, BOGS (2013 – 14)

Dear Friends

I feel overwhelmed as I sit down to write my final message of the year for BOGS Times. It seems just yesterday that Team 2013-14 took over.

How a year has gone by! It has been a busy year at the Society; apart from our usual activities of Foundation Day celebrations, BOGSCON, Orations, clinical meetings and CMEs, we participated in two collaborative

conferences, the ART-AIM Update and the ISCCP Annual conference. We organized the First Dr Subhas Mukherjee Memorial Lecture, a two-day Live Endoscopic Surgery Workshop and finished the year with the National Medicolegal Conference. We also managed to start the scholarship scheme for needy and meritorious MBBS students.

I thank you all for participating in the events and making them successful. My sincere thanks and gratitude to all the members of Team BOGS who

successfully executed all the events.I feel happy passing on the baton to the new team, and am certain they will take the society to new heights.

Long live BOGS

BOGSTimes4

BT: Didi, would you please tell us about your early days?

KM: My mother resided in Kalighat while my grandmother lived in Faridpur, East Bengal. She took my mother to her house where I was born on 1st September, 1933. We are three sisters and four brothers.

I was not at all like my other sisters, who were quite studious. I was very naughty, inattentive at studies, always busy playing or climbing trees, plucking flowers and fruits from neighbours’ gardens.

We studied at Kamala Girls’ school. It was only in the 9th standard that I got interested in studies. This was due to the influence of one our school teachers.

BT: Who were you most attached to?

KM: I was very attached to my grandmother. She also liked me very much. Our bond was so strong that I could not think of leaving her. I often proclaimed proudly “I am my granny’s daughter, I will never leave this house. I will stay here forever.”

BT: Who inspired you to enter the medical profession?

KM: In 1948, I passed Matriculation and passed My ISc from Ashutosh College in 1950.

My father was a liberal person. He always encouraged us in our pursuit of higher education. After I passed ISc, he took me to NRSMCH for the admission test and eventually I got admitted to MBBS. Two days later I appeared for the admission test in CMC Hospital. Though I got selected I was not allowed admission in CMC as I was already enrolled for MBBS in NRSMCH.

BT: Who influenced you select Obstetrics and Gynaecology as your speciality?

KM: My decision to become a gynecologist, and not a general surgeon, was influenced by a remark made by my elder brother- “Male patients won’t allow a female surgeon to operate on them”.

BT: Would you please recollect and share with us your enviable academic achievements?

KM: I did my house job under Dr Bimala Bhattacherjee who later married Prof Kripa Nath Mitra. Inspired by her, I completed and submitted my M.O. thesis during my house-surgeonship which I continued for one and half years. I passed my DGO exam from Chittaranjan Seva Sadan Hospital under the legendary Prof Subodh Mitra.

Thereafter, I joined government health service and was posted at Lady Dufferin Hospital, Kolkata. Subsequently, I applied for the M.O. course through service quota and was selected for the course at SSKM Hospital under the legendary teacher Prof. Chunilal Mukherjee.

In 1962, I joined as RS in Sambhunath Pandit Hospital, Kolkata, Here I got the opportunity to improve my individual skills as a surgeon, as well as an obstetrician. Even after I had completed my M.O. course and when I was working as RS of Sambhunath Pandit Hospital, I used to go to his place every evening to discuss my cases with him and learn from him so as to be perfect in my subject.

BT: You have always been straightforward and bold. We have heard that even in front of Prof. CLM you wouldn’t hesitate to speak your mind. Would you please recollect the incident?

KM: Yes, I was never afraid of anything. The fact is: During my M.O. course along with others at SSKM, there was a point of time when I had already submitted my thesis which had also been accepted and therefore I was relatively free. One day Prof. CLM asked one of us to assist him during an operation. Every body kept silent, but I volunteered. After scrubbing I stood at the first assistant’s place. Suddenly CLM asked me to stand at the surgeon’s place and start the operation and that he would like to assist me. I was so nervous that my hands started trembling. Seeing this CLM laughed aloud. Feeling embarrassed, I said even CLM will have tremor in his hands if he had to operate after a gap of two years. He did not mind my words and encouraged me, rather affectionately, to perform the surgery. This was his greatness as a teacher.

BT: We heard that you went to London university directly for doing your PhD. Would you please give us some inputs regarding this?

KM: This is something I must mention. At that time government rules did not permit anyone, who had finished M.O. to go abroad for MRCOG on study leave. In 1964 I joined as registrar in Eden Hospital and was working in the unit of Prof Sreemanta Banerjee and Prof Mukulika Konar.

It was Prof. Sreemanta Banerjee who not only guided me to go abroad with study leave but also arranged for my guide under whom I could pursue my PhD in London University Hospital. When I showed the acceptance

KALYANI MUKHERJEE

PROF. KALYANI MUKHERJEE, is the only Indian lady gynaecologist who earned a PhD on endocrinology from London University. As a teacher and as a person as well, she was loved by one and all, irrespective of age and status. This was reflected truly at her farewell reception when the venue had to be shifted to the GLT from Eden hospital so as to accommodate everybody. On behalf of BOGS Times, Dr Sukanta Misra, Senior Vice President of BOGS and Dr Suranjan Chakrabarti, Chairperson, Medical Disorder Committee, BOGS, recently met her to reminisce her life and experiences.

letter, the then Writers’ Buildings officials immediately granted me study leave with pay.

In 1968, on reaching London I met Dr. Sayer with Prof Banerjee’s letter. He asked me to select a topic and I selected “Relation of adrenal cortex with PET”. This study design required working with radioactive isotopes of hormones in blood and their measurements, which was then in very nascent stage. I had no exposure on basic research but lab technicians helped me overcome all the obstacles of research with animals and radiolabelled antibody titre measurement was successfully done within the stipulated time frame.

In this regard one incident is worth mentioning. At the beginning Dr Sayer sent me to a reputed endocrinologist, who was working with radioisotopes, to learn the basics. The endocrinologist was shocked to hear that I intended to complete my work in 3 to 4 years’ time and said it to be impossible. By the end of the second year when I was able to measure the antibody titre and doing my work at a reasonably good pace, I went to meet the said endocrinologist with my workbooks and data. Going through the data, he shook his head and said “hats off to you young lady, go ahead.”

My determination and courage helped me to complete my PhD in time and during that period I also acquired my MRCOG.

In 1973, I had to return to India to shoulder the responsibility of my aged parents. I returned without completing my FRCS which I sincerely wanted to.

I then worked as a gynecologist at Kalyani JNM Hospital before joining Eden hospital as lecturer in1976. Since 1976 I spent all my service life at Eden Hospital.

BT: Do you want to say something about the working atmosphere in Eden, then?

KM: I received a lot of affection from Bhabeshda (Dr Bhabesh Lahiri). One such advice which I still follow is “Look at your watch before starting and after completion of your operation, if you see your watch is not running then you will be considered as a fast surgeon.”

During my tenure at Eden hospital, I have cherished the association of all of my seniors, to name a few, Prof Mukullika Konar, Prof N N Roychowdhury, Prof K M Gun, Prof A K Sarkar, Prof H Duttagupta, Prof Anila Sengupta, Prof Biman Chakraborty.

I loved to teach and was always surrounded by students.

BT: As a teacher you are loved by all. Your motherly love and protection to your students, and house-surgeons along with your strict disciplined guidance as a teacher helped many to shine in their professional life both in India and abroad. Would you like to say a few words for the next generation?

KM: Yes, I love teaching. Since my early professional life, whenever possible, I used to teach youngsters. Even in London, I took regular tuition classes for MRCOG aspirants.

To fulfill my father’s desire, I wrote my first book on practical aspects of our subject, in 1999. The updated second edition of the book has been published again in 2013.

BT: How do you spend your leisure hours?

KM: I am always doing something or the other. I love writing poems, drawing sketches, listening to music etc. One of my patients published a collection of my poems.

BT: One personal question, why didn’t you marry?

KM: No particular reason. Frankly speaking, I never felt the urge to get married. One way I felt it is good for me. Moreover, I am happy and proud to be mother of so many successful people like you.

BT: Didi, any regrets?

KM: Nothing as such. I have always accepted life with a positive frame of mind. At times I felt, it would be nice to see my photo in Eden hospital along with other professor-directors of Eden.

BT: You were a very active BOGS member and did a lot for the society. Why have you withdrawn yourself after being the second vice president of BOGS? What is your message to the younger generations?

KM: No, no, I hav’nt withdrawn myself. At that time I felt it would be difficult for me to give anything more to the society.

Presently, BOGS team is going great guns.

I would like to ask the new generations — do not run after money, love the profession and never give it up. Think positively, always.

BT: Thank you, Didi. On behalf of team BOGS we wish you a long and healthy life and stay young in mind forever. PRANAM.

Antidepressants & neonatal problemsWomen who take antidepressants late in

pregnancy are slightly more likely to deliv-er babies with pulmonary hypertension than mothers who do not take antidepressants (Grigoriadis et al BMJ 2014;348:f6932).

Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn was found more frequently in in-fants whose mothers took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors throughout their pregnan-cy or in the third trimester. To give an idea of the absolute effect about 300 women would have to be treated for one additional case of pulmonary hypertension to be caused. A reminder of the need for caution in any drug prescription in pregnancy.

Prevention of HSV infection sheddingGenital herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a

chronic infection characterised by the recur-rence of lesions with viral shedding. Treat-ment is based on antiviral agents such as acy-clovir which was discovered 3 decades ago.

A new antiviral agent – pritelivir – acts by inhibiting replication of the virus in a way different to the nucleoside analogues. It is active in uninfected cells and now a report suggests it reduces viral shedding even in weekly doses (Wald et al NEJM 2014;370:201-10). The researchers showed that pritelivir prevents HSV lesion development so there will soon be a new drug available to treat an intractable disorder.
