CONSULTATION DAYS 2011

As a result of parental feedback and our desire to engage parents fully in school life, we have made some changes to the way we run parental consultation sessions. For Years 7, 9 and 11 we will be running individual appointment sessions each of 10 minutes duration between 2.00pm and 8.00pm. In order to facilitate this, the school day will finish for all students at 1.15pm on the following dates: Tuesday 18 January 2011 Wednesday 26 January 2011 Thursday 3 February 2011

The usual six lesson day will run, each lesson being shortened by 5 minutes. There will be an extended mid-morning break where lunch items will be served as there will be no lunchtime on these days. Richardson’s Coaches have been reserved to leave school at 1.15pm For Years 8 and 10 we will be running evening session with appointments of 5 minutes duration between 5.00pm and 8.00pm on the following dates: Thursday 13 January 2010 Thursday 10 March 2010 Letters will be going home asking parents to let us know who they would like to see. We

will then send out letters with your times. Please ensure you respond within the deadline so that you are given times as close to each other as possible to save your waiting times. Your cooperation is very much appreciated.

Lloyd George House Cheque Presentation to Cancer Research UK

Lloyd George House at Bohunt School has been very busy with a variety of events to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Students held raffles at Expressive Arts events, sold roses on Valentines’ Day, supported ‘own clothes’

days, sold Cancer Research UK pins and ribbons, made and sold Prom DVDs and organised and directed a Fashion Show amongst other fundraising initiatives. Last week, Sally Huggins, Area Fundraising Manager for Hampshire and Surrey, visited the School to

receive a cheque for £6322. She thanked Achievement Coordinator, Carly Du Feu, and the students of Lloyd George House for all their efforts in raising such a magnificent sum and explained how the money will be spent on helping to cure cancer and

prevent its development.

authorisation of absences from school. We value the high levels of attendance we see at Bohunt and encourage parents to consider the adverse effect of avoidable absence (e.g. for holidays in term time) on the academic progress of their children. Accordingly such requests will be considered on their individual merit and will rarely be granted in years 10 and 11 (the GCSE examination years) and at times in other year groups during, or in the lead up to, examinations. However I recognise that exceptional circumstances may prevail and I would ask that parents contact their child’s tutor or Achievement Coordinator to discuss the need for absence in such cases. EQUIPMENT REMINDER YEARS 7, 8 AND 9 Essential items for every lesson, every day: Blue/black biro pen, or fountain pen/handwriting pen, HB pencil, ruler, eraser, protractor, calculator, compasses, coloured pencils, dictionary, language dictionary, reading book, planner. EXPRESSIVE ARTS

Bohunt’s Expressive Arts Department has had an exciting start to the academic year due to new facilities (dance studio and exhibition space), high profile exhibitions and exciting visitors: Trash Fash

In response to an East Hants District Council article, Year 9 students decided to see if they could create clothing out of rubbish. The results were so good that they were put on display at an ‘Exhibition in the Square’ in Petersfield.

Former Status Quo Drummer Visits Bohunt School

Geoff Rich, former Status Quo drummer, spent an afternoon with over 100 students in a drum workshop designed to expand the children’s knowledge and understanding of this popular percussion instrument. Those with drumming experience had

the opportunity of demonstrating their skills working alongside him to the applause of the rest of the group. The finale saw all the audience participating in a huge jamming session with Geoff accompanying them on his famous drum kit.

Visitors to that exhibition were so impressed with what they saw that the garments then went on tour to Bordon, Alton College and the InTech Centre in Winchester. Last week the students were reunited with the

fashion garments which they had designed and made from plastic, paper net, string and other throw away materials. Work is now being displayed around the school.

Parents Apart

If you are a parent who has recently divorced or separated this may be the workshop for you. When you go through a divorce or separation, it’s a bit like starting a journey that you didn’t intend to go on. Your hopes and expectations for the future, for both you and your children, will have now changed. This 2 session

workshop is to help you to take this journey in the most positive and realistic way possible. Though it may not be easy, you can make some decisions that will have a positive effect on how your children experience the break-up. At the workshop, nobody will judge you and you only need to talk about what you want to share in that forum. All information

is confidential. This course is not about dealing with individual circumstances but about how you can make the difficult journey along that bumpy road a little bit smoother for all involved. Bohunt Careers Fair

On the evening of Tuesday 9 November, Bohunt School hosted their third annual Careers' Fair. Organiser, Ginny Green said “The fair was a fantastic opportunity for both students and parents to explore the many options offered to today’s school leavers. By taking the opportunity to meet, discuss and garner advice from professionals who were representing 12 of our local sixth form colleges, employers such as HSBC, DeVere Venues,

Tesco, Graduate Landscapes and representatives from the Armed Services, Police and Fire Services, our students are now in a far

Once again, Bohunt’s Year 11 Drama students took part in the hugely successful Shakespeare Schools Festival. Over 650 schools nationally took part in this tremendously exciting project involving 13,000 people in 80 theatres up and down the country. All the students took part in a workshop led by The National Youth Theatre which they all found to be extremely enjoyable. After weeks of hard work they then performed their

version of ‘Othello’ in the Minerva Theatre Chichester watched by family and friends. The evening was a huge success and the organiser said of their performance. ’It was such a wonderful show...the students showed a great understanding of the text and I loved the simplicity of the staging that let the strong acting shine through.’

stronger position to make informed choices in terms of options, training, courses and employment opportunities. The fair was a great hit, with

more than 400 year 9, 10 and 11 students and their parents attending, but maybe that had something to do with the Exhibitors giving out chocolates and loads of freebies!”

Page 10 Bohunt School

Mr Strowger, Headteacher of Bohunt School, said: “Today was a colourful, fun and cake-filled day! I am constantly amazed by the enthusiasm our students have for serving the wider needs of the Community, whether it be Austin House visiting the Peak

Getgood and Hudson House, to put everything in context. The main event was ‘Own Clothes Day’, which featured everything from fairies to animal jumper wearing staff; for the pleasure of seeing such horrifying makeovers students were asked to donate a pound each. Then, throughout the day, students cajoled and encouraged donations and sold cakes to get the total even higher. Bohunt’s students and teachers have an outstanding record for trying to help charities raise funds; each of the nine Houses has its own charity that it collects staggering amounts for.

On Friday 19 November, Bohunt School joined the rest of the Country in raising money for Children in Need. Inspired by the grand total of £39 million raised by last year’s BBC appeal, students dug deep into their pockets to try to help out a cause greater than their own. Encouraged by the teachers the students have already raised over £1200, with more still to come in; they tried everything from cake sales to traditional money boxes around school to pull every crucial penny together for Pudsey. The day started with a Children in Need assembly, led by Miss

Bohunt School’s Day for Children in Need

Centre, the Duke of Edinburgh group giving up over 700 hours of volunteering time in the local community or Appeals such as today.”

Year 7 Readathon

Huge thanks and congratulations to Year 7 who have raised a grand total of £1089.34 for Readathon. This is a stunning achievement- we almost doubled our hope of £600! Top fundraisers were Hannah Clayforth 7A, Henry Horner 7A and Darcey Birch 7H; thanks to all of you who worked so hard to raise

this amazing amount for

such a worthwhile cause.

Local MP quizzed by Bohunt students

A group of year 11 students at Bohunt School got to discover more about the way that parliament operates and MPs work when Damian Hinds, MP for Hampshire East, attended their Citizenship lesson. The students needed to interview someone in authority to help them with their GCSE Citizenship Studies coursework and Mr Hinds was an ideal person to ask for his views on a variety of issues, including: how laws are passed, whether ‘First Past The Post’ should be replaced, how media self-regulation works

Bohunt’s new Year 7s became the stars of the school just before half term as, over three nights, they took to the stage to perform songs from Grease. What made the evenings more amazing was that they were organised and co-ordinated by Bohunt’s talented Year 11s. This involvement of older students was important as it allowed the teachers to concentrate on the hidden aim of the events, which was to gel the new tutor groups together, give the Year 7s a huge

confidence boost and make them really feel part of the school. On each night three to four tutor groups performed; each brought to the stage two creative dance routines, a self-devised piece of drama that regularly had the audience in stitches and songs ranging from Summer Nights to Grease Lightning. Also, the art teachers and their students got the chance to design the retro set, make creative backdrops and give a third dimension to the stage. The live band was staffed by Bohunt’s Year 11s and back stage yet more

older students were pulling the strings. Whilst the tutor groups changed over older students took over and showcased the depth of talent nurtured by Bohunt’s outstanding Expressive Arts Department: dance pieces, solo songs and an amazing version of Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow’s ‘Shame’ performed by James Fields and Harry Lovelock. Every night was met with a standing ovation and afterwards, in the newly created Art Exhibition Space, the praise flowed: The Year 7s thought

that “it was a great experience that really made me feel part of the school” and that “I’d love to do it again and again”. One of the audience said it was “entertaining and a real showcase of talents”. Mr Strowger, Headteacher, said that “the evening really shows what outstanding teachers can do when supported by older students willing to take on responsibility and Year 7s who already feel part of the school.”

BOHUNT’S GREENLAND TEAM HEAD TO THE PEAK DISTRICT

The students from who are taking part in a science expedition to Greenland next summer all survived a gruelling training weekend to the Peak District last month. Twenty five team members spent the weekend developing their navigation, leadership, communication and organisational skills near Bamford. On the first day the group was split into their Greenland expedition teams and left the hostel for an all-day mountain ‘walk’ with their expedition leaders. Hours later, in the dark, the final team made it back to the Hostel having climbed up onto Stanage Edge (one of the best known climbing spots in the country) wandered through bracken above their heads and navigated their way

through a disused quarry. In the evening the students prepared their own meals and had a briefing on their Greenland expedition destination; talk of remote glaciers, summit camps, crampons, having rifles in case of polar bear attack and long stretches away from civilisation completing the fieldwork made the group excited, but also nervous. The final day in the Peaks comprised a briefing on the specialist clothing and equipment the team will need to cope with the Arctic conditions. There was also a discussion on fund raising, which is going to form a large part of the next nine months due to each student having to raise nearly £3000. The students are showing amazing enterprise in order to raise the money. So far they have organised a community talk by Dr Mike Stroud, made artwork to sell, organised gigs,

Page 13 Bohunt School

run cake sales, bag-packed at Tescos and taken part in sponsored events. The entire team agreed that it was a fantastic weekend and are now looking forward to their next training weekend which will involve wild camping on Dartmoor in late January! “I’ll never forget this fantastic experience. It was a weekend packed with physical challenges but I wouldn’t swap it for anything! I learnt a whole lot, made new friends, and now can’t wait to go to Greenland”, said Holly, one of the team members. The team are looking for sponsors who can help the team achieve its scientific and personal aims as kit sponsors, or by supplying kit. If you would like to sponsor the trip, please contact Mr Avery on 01428 724324 or by e-mailing [email protected]

The Bohunt Big Tidy Up … A site to behold!

The Headteacher , Mr Strowger, had been in London on school business on Thursday 14 October and returned to find the Bohunt School site “spotless”! The ‘magic wand’ was in fact the valiant efforts of over 150 volunteer litter pickers during their lunch break. The newly formed Green Team of Bohunt (committed to making Bohunt an eco-school) chose to organise the event as part of the nationwide ‘Big Tidy Up’ initiative which is supported by the charity ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ and has seen international companies participate. The dozen or so members of the Green Team were determined to make the event a popular and fun time for the volunteers. Mrs Lansley, who chairs the team, took inspiration from the Goodwood Vintage Festival where litter volunteers were

given free entry. The Green Team decided that every volunteer would be rewarded for their service to the community with a cake, a drink , an ERA and a sticker. Furthermore, a bevy of talented musicians and circus performers from Year 9 to Year 11 entertained the litter pickers at each of the 4 zones. The registration and reward base camp even had a unicyclist, Adam Baker in Year 9! The event was scheduled to open at 1.10pm but in fact students began queuing to register at 12.55 at the start of their lunch break. Deputy Headteacher, Mrs Parker and Business Manager, Mr Knight attended to demonstrate their support and were staggered by the continual stream of volunteers. Jean McGregory, from Recycle for Hampshire, attended the

Page 14 Bohunt School

event and provided a tarpaulin sheet on which all the litter was displayed. With help from volunteers, she sorted the litter into waste, recycling and compost. After lunch, during Geography Year 7 students participated in analysing and weighing the different types of litter. Disturbingly, the largest amount of litter was recyclable. "It was quite incredible how much litter was collected!! It must seriously reinforce an argument for recycling bins to collect tins/plastic bottles as well as paper and card." All the bags and tabards provided by Keep Britain Tidy will be recycled by Mrs Shaw in the Art department, whose Year 9 ‘recycled fashion’ has recently been displayed across East Hampshire.

Bohunt held a Green non uniform

day on 15 October and proceeds

from funds raised will be used to

support Green projects within

the school.

Discussion of budgets and baccalaureates may keep school leaders interested, but they’re not the ideal topics for inspiring children. This is why students at Bohunt School are talking instead about Great Britain Ultra Runners, teams of huskies, writing on walls and how to flip a table over. Their conversations are a reminder that structures and the curriculum can only do so much, what is most important is the desire young people have for their learning. Too often the only time ‘motivation’ is mentioned to students is by head shaking teachers at parents’ evenings and finger wagging Headteachers in assemblies around exam time. Bohunt is building students

intrinsic motivation by bringing in a range of exciting guest speakers. In October Dr Mike Stroud, whose daughter went to the school, spoke of his expeditions with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, racing 500 miles with a 72 year old granny and completing the Marathon de Sables. The most recent speaker, Sandra Bowers, brought with her not only a great tale of overcoming a malformed ankle to be chosen for the GB 100km team, but a team of four huskies. The dogs are her training and racing partners and seemed to understand the purpose of the visit as, for over an hour, they helped children to run faster and more enjoyably than they ever had before. Another initiative

aimed at building intrinsic motivation is the design, with the help of Apple, of a state of the art classroom that transforms learning and teaching by handing control over to the students. The project has led to Bohunt being asked to present about the project at three national conferences this year. The new learning environment features:

• Interactive groupwork tables allow students to improve each others work and present to the rest of the class from any part of the room.

• Individual, triangular tables on wheels allow students to easily configure the room however they want.

• Two of the walls act like giant whiteboards meaning students can discuss and plan projects together in a visual and kinaesthetic way. There is a Macbook and ipod for each student so that they can create and/or consume media

independently. Initial feedback is incredibly positive; a student from another school who took part in a collaborative English masterclass said: “Brilliant facilities at Bohunt! The whiteboard walls, macs and projectors were amazing and provided the perfect learning environment. Thanks for a great day Bohunt.” Headteacher Mr Strowger said: “Getting students to work independently is fairly easy, but getting them to challenge themselves to produce their best work is not. By focusing on combining great staff with self-motivated children and cutting edge learning environments Bohunt is helping transform learning and teaching.”

Where were huskies and writing on walls in the Education White Paper?

SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS

Since last September, we have been keeping parents informed using our new E-Comms System. We have had a very positive response to the information we are sending out. Parents are delighted that they are actually receiving information—student post has a habit of going astray! With our School Communication System we can now e-mail parents on the first day of a child’s absence if we have not received an explanation for it, a member of staff will call parents and, as a trial, e-mail. Please make sure that we have an up to date e-mail address or an address that will be accessed regularly in order that a reason for absence may be given as soon as possible. If you do not wish to be contacted in this way, please let us know and we will continue to phone. Please email [email protected] if you have a new email address

Bohunt School is a vibrant learning community whose ethos is encapsulated by three short verbs: enjoy, respect and achieve. Our success is based on an approach which combines the highest expectations with a sensitivity to learners’ individual needs. It concentrates on maintaining the very best standards of learning and teaching, and takes every opportunity to recognise and reward achievement. We are proud to be a designated Language College and International School and we offer considerable richness and diversity of cultural and linguistic experience to our learners across the curriculum.
