Stereotypic Notions on Male Identity andthe Literary Work of Borisav Stankovi

S u m m a r y

This article offers a retrospection of xed notions about male identity in patriar-chal culture, which exist in ethno-anthropological and cultural literature. These stere-otypes are considered in respect to the literary work of Borisav Stankovi, especiallyhis novel Gazda Mladen. It appears that literature gives a different image of the maleand a different family and social hierarchy than the one we nd in classical literatureon patriarchate. Particular stress is placed on questioning the denition of patriarchate,as well as the viewing of duties (responsibilities) the male had in patriarchal society.The article also describes the symbolic violence inicted on male family members.Gazda Mladen shows that the male in patriarchal society had to obey to strict norms ifhe wanted to be socially accepted, norms that could bind him and imprison him. Thepatriarchal society had a developed conception of how a man should behave, whichqualities he should have, to what extent he could show feelings. If the male wouldnot accept the imposed model, his gender role would be questioned.
